Its all about image for some in the realm of the vampiric. We want to live a certain way, so we do it. There is no reason to rely on traditional corporate American culture when we can create our own ways of life that appeal to us on a higher level. Vampirism came from such a longing. However, it does have value in the spiritual/occult world as well.
Being a vampire is all based around the longing for energy, not just the longing for dressing up in black and hanging out at dark clubs or being nocturnal. A sanguine vampire drinks blood for its energy, and a psychic vampire takes in auric energies. Of course, one has to take care in believing that energy can be taken from someone like a modern vampire does. As I mentioned in the previous topic, we need to hold a level of logic. I cannot prove that energy works the way it does, I simply feel it. Therefore, there is also a level of secrecy involved in the practice. One shouldn't spread a belief that can't be proven. When i started writing this I didn't write it for newcomers to the scene. I wrote it as a proposal to long time practitioners to look at things in a different, non-discriminating light.
Michelle Belanger (whom I respect for all she has done for the community), wrote the Psychic Vampire Codex, which claims that true vampires came from a long lost civilization. It also claims that one can't become a true vampire, they are only born that way. Although I see her reasoning in it, all her bases are on invisible evidence. Nothing she claims can be proven, and not only that, but it is discriminating because it assumes that no one who wasn't born the way they proposed can be a part of it. If one is to believe in something as incorporeal as this, it should never be so discriminating. Religion, spirituality and culture should be there to better our lives, not alienate others.
The different groups of vampires in the community are so diverse that it is impossible to assume one thing and say that the others aren't true. The best system of belief is the one that includes everyone and unites us all peacefully. Therefore, in all the madness of the scene, I have chosen to believe that vampires are nothing special. We're all similar people that connect to a tradition of energy taking (and sharing) mixed with a hint of goth. In the months that come I'll present a new way of looking at all of our crazy ideas.
A vampire is simply a human being with the desire/need to take energy from his/her surroundings to use for his/her own well being or purpose. A vampire is not special or supernatural, nor can they be logically proven to come from a special place beyond worlds, or be reincarnated from anything inhuman.
There are some, seeking perhaps fame or attention, or maybe just acting on feelings and dreams, who would claim that a vampire is more than human. I respect that thought, but it is more logical to assume it is a phenomenon brought about by many other circumstances such as literature, occult practice, television, gaming, social image, longing for a social status, etc.
In a world rapidly turning away from blind faith, many are still clinging to forms of religious habit such as the belief in a supernatural power of vampirism. The irony in the act is that many of those who cling to the ideas behind it also laugh off christianity because of its qualities of blind faith.
It is time to come to reality and embrace the qualities in the vampire culture without the threat of hypocrisy.
