A recent thread got me thinking about this:

A while back, near the end of my church going days I was having a conversation with my father after the Sunday morning service. Being born and raised Greek Orthodox I was dragged kicking and screaming to every church service for every occasion when I was young. I spent my teen years as an acolyte (altar boy…and NO my priest wasn’t a pedophile). I can safely say I have a good working knowledge of the Greek Orthodox faith, more so than the average go to church on Easter and Christmas parishoner.

And “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” is pretty accurate for many of us second generation Greek-Americans…

Anyway, I can’t remember on what occasion I was in church but we were standing in the reception hall drinking coffee and a very beautiful young woman wearing a tight form fitting cocktail dress walked by us. Apparently she is the 18 year old daughter of my Dad’s friend. My Dad made some remark about her being dressed like a prostitute and how her choice of garments and make up embarrasses her parents. I’ll admit, perhaps the sequined dress was not the most appropriate choice considering the audience and it was a bit distracting. My issue was this: She was there. She came to Church, she was participating in the service, she was helping serve coffee. She had embraced it. This was invisible to her fellow church goers. All they saw was the dress.

When Sunday morning at the bible factory is nothing more than a fashion show it’s time for me to get some extra sleep. My kids were baptized in the Church…why? My unrelenting Father; It did quiet him down a bit after. The other day I asked my youngest daughter what she does when she goes to church. (Usually she goes when visiting my parents) She said she sit’s there with her Grandmother. I then asked if she believed in God. She looked at me quizzically and said “why?” I told her it wasn’t a trick question I was just wondering if she did and if so why. She half giggling said: “yes”. Then I said: “why?” Her answer: “Because if I don’t, Papou will get mad at me”. There you have it.
