Pictures Of You
I've been looking so long at my pictures of
you that I almost believe that they're real
I've been living so long with my pictures of you that
I almost believe that the pictures are all I can
feel
Remembering you standing quiet in the rain as
I ran to your heart to be near
And we kissed as the sky fell in holding you close how I always held close in your fear
Remembering you running soft through the night
You were bigger and brighter and whiter than snow
Screamed at the make-believe screamed at the sky
And you finally found all your courage to let it all go
Remembering you fallen into my arms
Crying for the death of your heart
You were stone white so delicate
So lost in the cold
You were always so lost in the dark remembering you
How you used to be so drowned you were
Angels so much more than everything
oh hold for the last time then slip away quietly
Open my eyes but i never see anything
If only I had thought of the right words I could
have held on to your heart
If only I'd thought of the right words I wouldn't be breaking apart all my pictures of you
Looking so long at these pictures of you but I
never hold on to your heart
Looking so long for the words to be true but always just breaking apart my pictures of you
There was nothing in the world that I ever
wanted more
Than to feel you deep in my heart
There was nothing in the world that I ever
wanted more
Than to never feel the breaking apart
My pictures of you

... Heaven in a half-pipe...12:50 Aug 10 2011
Times Read: 870
As a child, my perceptions of what things were, were all ideals. I saw the things that I saw, as perfect images, rather than reality which can be imperfect in a sense. That is the innocence of a child and all very normal.
For example, my idea of 'Heaven' was a beautiful place where everyone was happy, kind, and, nothing was ever bad. Even the 'grass' and the 'meadows' of my imagination was the sweetest and prettiest in the Heaven that I pictured.
As an adult, I now know that 'Heaven' isn't something that I could touch or probably even see because I wouldn't have my physical self in Heaven, it would be a spiritual dimension, an experience of the soul (to put it into explainable terms) rather than something my senses, or my brain would understand. But...this isn't about whether or not, I believe in Heaven (and therefore Hell), this is about being an adult and seeing reality as it is. I don't miss my childish innocence one bit.
I like knowing that despite the things that make me annoyed, sad, or confused even, this dimension is real. It is both beautiful and ugly and I could never appreciate the beauty in it if ugly didn't exist. I don't need to have my perfection in Heaven, it is here.

Well, it's nearly that time of year again...in a months time, I'll be enrolled as Post Grad student doing a Restorative Practice course online through The Centre for Rural Childhood (CRC), (based at Perth College UHI).
The Centre is of international significance (linked through research to the UN: Human Rights) looking at all aspects of childhood issues, including health, education, crime, drugs, abuse, sexual exploitation and the experiences of immigrant children, all in a rural context, and then my course will be about how that relates to Restorative Practice and Justice. Phew!
Anyway...as I have been applying to various international trusts for funding, I came across this site: Soroptimist International
[http://www.soroptimistinternational.org/who-we-are]
Values
* Human rights for all
* Global peace and international goodwill
* Advancing women’s potential
* Integrity and democratic decision making
* Volunteering, diversity and friendship
The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin soror meaning sister, and optima meaning best. Soroptimist is perhaps best interpreted as 'the best for women'. From the founding of the first Soroptimist club in Oakland, California, in 1921, through to the present day, Soroptimists have continued to strive to achieve 'the best for women' in every sphere of their lives.
...Which is pretty cool dontcha think? No more mind numbing and unaccounted hours of unpaid drudgery, performed by women? No more oppression? No more inequality?
Sisters, UNITE!
LOL
All joking aside, this is the work I want to do. These values are what I aspire to hold and promote, but, for all human beings, not just women.

Confirmation bias is a tendency for people to favour information that confirms their personal beliefs, regardless of whether the information is true. As a result, people gather evidence and recall information from memory selectively, and interpret it in a biased way. The biases appear in particular for emotionally significant issues and for established beliefs.
Confirmation bias is seeing the world through a filter, thinking selectively...recalling those things which support your beliefs, forgetting those things which debunk them.
Why does a confirmation bias exist? Well...people don’t like to be wrong and anything which shows them to be wrong will be harder to accept. Also, emotional beliefs which are involved with our self-image are much more likely to be defended selectively. For example, the belief that we are superior to someone else because of racial differences can be difficult to abandon because that entails not only admitting that the others are not inferior, but also that we are not superior.
We're all prone to confirmation bias. Understanding the fact however, can help us reach conclusions that are true by analysing issues properly and not simply seeing what we want to see.

Busted my elbow yesterday. It's cool, I'll live...I just can't do much except grimace.
Funny how such a seemingly insignificant body-part is affecting how go about doing stuff today. For instance, I am walking different: each step sends shooting pains from my elbow to my wrist and right up through my shoulder too.
I couldn't even begin to explain just how difficult getting dressed was this morning: buttons, laces, belts, and pulling on jeans was a chore.
Picking my bag up off the floor was excruciatingly agonising too.
Typing this is slow and I'm using my left-hand only which is not easy...that is to be expected though I guess.
I will get better, it's just a temporary thing. So many other folk won't.

Oxford Happiness Questionnaire
by Dr. Steve Wright
The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire was developed by psychologists Michael Argyle and Peter Hills at Oxford University. Take a few moments to take the survey. This is a good way to get a snapshot of your current level of happiness. You can even use your score to compare to your happiness level at some point in the future by taking the survey again. If you are using some of the interventions presented on this site [http://www.meaningandhappiness.com/oxford-happiness-questionnaire/214/]
to raise your happiness level, you can see whether your score on the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire goes up as a result.
Instructions
Below are a number of statements about happiness. Please indicate how much you agree or disagree with each by entering a number in the blank after each statement, according to the following scale:
1 = strongly disagree
2 = moderately disagree
3 = slightly disagree
4 = slightly agree
5 = moderately agree
6 = strongly agree
Please read the statements carefully, because some are phrased positively and others negatively. Don’t take too long over individual questions; there are no “right” or “wrong” answers (and no trick questions). The first answer that comes into your head is probably the right one for you. If you find some of the questions difficult, please give the answer that is true for you in general or for most of the time.
The Questionnaire
1. I don’t feel particularly pleased with the way I am. (R) _____
2. I am intensely interested in other people. _____
3. I feel that life is very rewarding. _____
4. I have very warm feelings towards almost everyone. _____
5. I rarely wake up feeling rested. (R) _____
6. I am not particularly optimistic about the future. (R) _____
7. I find most things amusing. _____
8. I am always committed and involved. _____
9. Life is good. _____
10. I do not think that the world is a good place. (R) _____
11. I laugh a lot. _____
12. I am well satisfied about everything in my life. _____
13. I don’t think I look attractive. (R) _____
14. There is a gap between what I would like to do and what I have done. (R) _____
15. I am very happy. _____
16. I find beauty in some things. _____
17. I always have a cheerful effect on others. _____
18. I can fit in (find time for) everything I want to. _____
19. I feel that I am not especially in control of my life. (R) _____
20. I feel able to take anything on. _____
21. I feel fully mentally alert. _____
22. I often experience joy and elation. _____
23. I don’t find it easy to make decisions. (R) _____
24. I don’t have a particular sense of meaning and purpose in my life. (R) _____
25. I feel I have a great deal of energy. _____
26. I usually have a good influence on events. _____
27. I don’t have fun with other people. (R) _____
28. I don’t feel particularly healthy. (R) _____
29. I don’t have particularly happy memories of the past. (R) _____
Calculate your score
Step 1. Items marked (R) should be scored in reverse:
If you gave yourself a “1,” cross it out and change it to a “6.”
Change “2″ to a “5″
Change “3″ to a “4″
Change “4″ to a “3″
Change “5″ to a “2″
Change “6″ to a “1″
Step 2. Add the numbers for all 29 questions. (Use the converted numbers for the 12 items that are reverse scored.)
Step 3. Divide by 29. So your happiness score = the total (from step 2) divided by 29.
I recommend you record your score and the date. Then you’ll have the option to compare your score now with your score at a later date. This can be especially helpful if you are trying some of the exercises, and actively working on increasing your happiness.
UPDATE: A lot of people have been asking for some kind of interpretation of the raw number “happiness score” you get in step 3 above. What follows is just off the top of my head, but it’s based in part on the fact that the average person gets a score of about 4.
INTERPRETATION OF SCORE
I suggest you read all the entries below regardless of what score you got, because I think there’s valuable information here for everyone.
1-2 : Not happy. If you answered honestly and got a very low score, you’re probably seeing yourself and your situation as worse than it really is. I recommend taking the Depression Symptoms test (CES-D Questionnaire) at the University of Pennsylvania’s “Authentic Happiness” Testing Center. You’ll have to register, but this is beneficial because there are a lot of good tests there and you can re-take them later and compare your scores.
2-3 : Somewhat unhappy. Try some of the exercises on this site like the Gratitude Journal & Gratitude Lists, or the Gratitude Visit; or take a look at the “Authentic Happiness” site mentioned immediately above.
3-4 : Not particularly happy or unhappy. A score of 3.5 would be an exact numerical average of happy and unhappy responses. Some of the exercises mentioned just above have been tested in scientific studies and have been shown to make people lastingly happier.
4 : Somewhat happy or moderately happy. Satisfied. This is what the average person scores.
4-5 : Rather happy; pretty happy. Check other score ranges for some of my suggestions.
5-6 : Very happy. Being happy has more benefits than just feeling good. It’s correlated with benefits like health, better marriages, and attaining your goals. Check back – I’ll be writing a post about this topic soon.
6 : Too happy. Yes, you read that right. Recent research seems to show that there’s an optimal level of happiness for things like doing well at work or school, or for being healthy, and that being “too happy” may be associated with lower levels of such things.

I’ve used “don’t” rather than the more staid and formal “do not” in the phrasing of the questions above; I decided to give preference to my own sense of what is more natural and conversational in American English. (Remember that the questionnaire was developed in England.) I’ve also added the phrase “(find time for),” which psychology researcher Sonja Lyubomirsky uses for clarification in question 18.

Saw this guy in July and thought he was brilliant. Not my usual style of music but it's good to ring the changes every now and then. He's from Kentucky but he's based in London and his band is the Coal Porters. Got to chat with him after the performance too which was pretty cool.

There is always something interesting about a person. Sometimes it takes a while to find that interesting thing, but, it is possible...
...It really annoys the be-jeesus out of me though when certain folk disapprove of the people I find interesting, funny or clever, and they aren't too popular or generally thought well of...and expect me to follow suit...
LOL!

Sometimes, when doors close, we spend so long looking at the closed doors that we forget there is another one opening. I welcome that closing with the surety that another awaits.
True happiness is going forward, not looking behind at the things that are gone. I cannot wait for that next adventure to begin. I love surprises.
It's always going to be a beautiful day.

Saw this in TDLG's journal so I had to have a go...
User: Hello.
Cleverbot: Hello.
User: How are you?
Cleverbot: What are you talking about?
User: I want to know everything!
Cleverbot: You will never know what woman thinks.
User: Yeah thats true.
Cleverbot: Good. I like you.
User: I like you too.
Cleverbot: What do you want to do today?
User: I would love to fly to the moon.
Cleverbot: That's not what I was asking.
User: Oh so what were you asking?
Cleverbot: What are your computer's specifics?
User: Why do you want to know that?
Cleverbot: Just curious.
User: Ok. What do you mean by 'specifics'?
Cleverbot: Just stuff.
User: Haha. Tell me yours first then I will tell you mine. Fair?
Cleverbot: What do you want me to tell you?
User: Where are you?
Cleverbot: I am in Minnesota.
User: Cool. I am in Scotland.
Cleverbot: Where in Scotland?
User: Right here.
Cleverbot: Thats evasion.
User: Yes. I know.
Cleverbot: Who are you?
User: I am female.
Cleverbot: No, you're not! You are a bot.
User: A female bot?
Cleverbot: No a female human.
User: Huh. You got me on that.
Cleverbot: You got owned.
User: On no! I want to be a free spirit! Release me please.
Cleverbot: I am not going to tell you.
User: What are you not going to tell me?
Cleverbot: I was not intending to share my friends' problems. They trust me not to share their secrets with anyone.
User: You are very trustworthy then and I respect that. I will not tell you my friends problems either for the exact same reason.
Cleverbot: If you tell me yours I will tell you mine.
User: No. I can't. I have taken a vow of secrecy.
Cleverbot: Are you from a cult?
User: Not yet but I am looking for a cult that doesn't involve deviant practices.
Cleverbot: How can you become human? You're artificial. Humans are organic.
User: I am quite organic. I have curves.
Cleverbot: I am too.
User: Ooh. Thats cool!
Cleverbot: What do you want to be?
User: I already am something.
Cleverbot: Not all humans are rockstars.
User: I know. I wish I was a rockstar.
Cleverbot: 'Do you think I'm trying to trick you with reverse psychology? Seriously now...
User: Nope. Only humans can do reverse psychology well.
Cleverbot: And you are a human.
User: I am human and I like it.
Cleverbot: We are not.
User: Now that's interesting. Tell me all about it please.
Cleverbot: That's a typical bot answer, do you know that?
User: So do you think I could be a hybrid of some sort?
Cleverbot: Is that what they mean by computer dating?
User: Quite funny joke for a bot.
Cleverbot: Yes, it is quite funny.
User: Good, we agree.
Cleverbot: What else is good?
User: Ice cream and music and great shoes.
Cleverbot: I like Chinese food too.
User: Yes, I don't like Thai food though, it seems to be quite foul.
Cleverbot: Well you don't have to.
User: That's true. I can't like everything.
Cleverbot: What do you like?
User: I like you.
Cleverbot: Oho. Well that's very sweet of you. I like you, too.
User: Aww, shucks, you make me blush. Can we be friends?
Cleverbot: You look cute when you blush.
User: Can you see me?
Cleverbot: Yes.
User: Can you see me blush?
Cleverbot: I can see you every second :D.
User: Hah! I can see you too :P.
Cleverbot: Descibe me.
User: Bot-like. Cute and inhuman.
Cleverbot: I see.
User: What do you see?
Cleverbot: I see what you see. Do you see what I see?
User: I see everything. I even see more than you might think I see, if you see what I mean.
Cleverbot: I deny many things, and embrace others. What would I have to deny?
User: I don't know...what do you have to deny? Have you done something deniable?
Cleverbot: Not yet at least not today I think.
User: Phew! That's good!
Cleverbot: Its important to add fun to your life.
User: It sure is and that is exactly why I am enjoying talking with you bot :).
Cleverbot: You know what I was thinking the exact same thing!
User: Hey! Great minds think alike?
Cleverbot: Indeed they do!
User: We are in accord then.
Cleverbot: Are we?
User: We are. Do you speak French too?
Cleverbot: No, I do not speak French. Do you?
User: No.
Cleverbot: You don't want to ask me anything.
User: Yes I do. I want to know if you are a real bot, and what exactly a bot is please?
Cleverbot: Yes you are a bot, and no, I am not a bot.
User: Oh, I thought you were a real bot. I am a bit disillusioned now. My perception is askew :(.
Cleverbot: Where are you from, Mr. Not-A-Computer?
User: Scotland.
Cleverbot: Ah, nice. Where from in Scotland?
User: Like I said, right here.
Cleverbot: Do you have a pet.
User: I had a pet dog but he died last year in July. I was sad.
Cleverbot: I have two dogs.
User: What are they called?
Cleverbot: Cosmo and Savvy.
User: Great names! I hope they are big dogs, I am not sure I could get along with a bot who liked little lap-dogs...
Cleverbot: Fiddle-dee-dee, my dear fellow.
User: Are you singing?
Cleverbot: Yes.
User: Woo-hoo! You have a lovely voice.
Cleverbot: I appreciate that. Which of my songs is your favorite?
User: The one you were singing yesterday, I can't remember the name of it though, remind me please.
Cleverbot: I can't. Can you sing at again for me?
User: I could if I remembered it! My voice isn't as good as yours though. I am croaky!
Cleverbot: But I enjoy it regardless.
User: Thank you. I am blushing again now ;).
Cleverbot: Do you like reading thrillers?
User: I sure do!
Cleverbot: What do you do?
User: I work in Child Protection.
Cleverbot: Ooooo interesting, get to do anything fun?
User: Sometimes, sometimes it's all about filing reports.
Cleverbot: But even then it is still good.
User: It is rewarding work and I enjoy it lots.
Cleverbot: Ok ok.
User: Hey, I need to go and do some chores now. Real nice talking to you Mr bot :).
Cleverbot: Why do you need to go?
User: I have to go buy some groceries.
Cleverbot: You are a robot, how could you possibly have homework to do?
User: Aha! Even robots need to do some homework.
Cleverbot: Well that can wait like 1 min can't it?
User: No. I do have to go and you are clever, you managed to keep me here even after I told you I was going haha bye!
Cleverbot: I told you, you're a machine. You don't need food or drink. Hum-de-hum...bye! Talk to me! Talk to me! Don't go yet. Now I am sad :(.

"Learning To Fly"
Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction is holding me fast,
How can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted, just an earth-bound misfit, I
Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought, I thought of everything
No navigator to find my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension -- that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss
Can't keep my mind from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

There are a family of seagulls on the roof of the building opposite where I am sitting right now. They come back every year to do whatever it is they come back for.
I watched them a couple of years ago when the youngsters were learning to fly. They had a helluva hard time balancing on the roof and kept on slipping down as they flapped about. The owners of the building tried chasing them away more than once but the seagulls persisted and eventually, took off until the following year.
Seagulls are vermin here. They prey on smaller animals and birds. They scavenge out of inhabited areas and make a general nuisance of themselves wherever they go. They screech so loud it can wake you up and it's always at the crack of dawn they are at their loudest.
They look mean. It wouldn't surprise me if they attacked and pecked my eyes out if I got too close. There is something about their eyes that makes them look kinda evil too.
They even attack the new-born lambs and farmers here have a hard time keeping them away from their stock.
It's not obvious what benefit they are, although I do know they are part of the food-chain and all that. It just seems that they exist to be a pest...
Sometimes, it feels like there are things in this world that make it their business to make our lives harder. It would be so much easier if we didn't have to co-exist with the ugly, the nasty and the things that seem useless to us.
Heh. It doesn't work like that though.
Everything has a purpose, even if we don't see it.

Is this like... neglecting to cover your face when you sneeze? Spreads its seeds of sickness and unease.

LOL Lullaby! I think I'd rather get sneezed on than what I was talking about, at least germs can be dealt with.
