Desiree drove up the street towards the crime scene, the flashing lights of the police cars and the ambulances had drew a crowd. She sighed heavily as she looked over at her sleeping partner who was her brother. She shoved him after parking the car and he looked at her with a frown on his face. He realized they were at their destination and yawned, stretched, then opened the door and got out of the car. Desiree followed Dorian and they walked up to the scene. A officer who was trying to keep the crowd back looked at them, when they showed their badges he lifted the caution tape and let them inside. They walked up to the bodies and the carnage of it was savage and surreal. They looked as if they were ripped up by a blade.
“I wish I could tell you what has happened here, they‘ve been ripped up like beef. Are those claw marks? I have never seen any kind of animal with claws like this.” said the officer who was at the scene first.
Desiree and Dorian looked at each other and shook their heads. “We have, and they are hard to catch.”
“Oh yeah the immortals, I can’t believe they still use you two guys. Immortal detectives. Especially when their isn’t any such thing.” said an arrogant man whom Dorian and Desiree disliked, more then they disliked the taste of human blood. “You two creepy fuckers would have been booted from the force if I were your boss.” the man laughed and Desiree punched him in the face. He stumbled back and Dorian laughed.
“Why do you even speak Henry, you know it makes them angry.” said another man who walked up to them. “Hello Desiree, Dorian. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a crime like this. What does the brandings on them mean, and can you track them?” asked Captain Wagner.
“The brandings tell us they belonged to a clan, human watchers, and yes we can track them, keep your retarded detective away from us Wagner, next time he’ll get a bite instead of a punch.” said Desiree and she and Dorian walked away as Wagner giggled at what she said.
Desiree and Dorian stood in the clearing of Red Dawn Park waiting for Renkai to come through the trees to meet with them. Dorian didn’t like him or the feeling he would get when he was around. Renkai knew it was because he was intimidated by him. Desiree could sense his feelings and turned to her little brother with a sigh.
“What Dorian?” he rolled his eyes and looked at her.
“Why do you always run to him, how could you trust him he isn’t like us, he isn’t like the werewolves either, he is different?”
“He carried the venoms of both immortals, he’s better then all of us. He won’t hurt us trust me Dorian okay.” he looked into her eyes and gave a slow nod.
Behind them stood Renkai leaning up against a tree smoking a cigarette. When they smelled the smoke they turned to him. “Didn’t mean to interrupt such a touching moment. You called me here, because of the bodies in the street in downtown Sweet Water?” they walked over to where he stood.
“What have you found out, I know you know something Renkai?” she asked.
“A few months ago there was a gathering, and at that gathering something went terribly wrong. What ever it was started a blood feud. You have vampires and werewolves on one side and vampires and werewolves on the other. You have stumbled upon a war and what you have to ask yourself is, if you are ready to place yourself in the middle of it.” they both looked at him.
“You don’t know why they fight? asked Dorian, Renkai shook his head, walked up to Desiree, and touched her face. Dorian frowned at this and turned his back on them.
“Stay away from this Desiree, the humans are victims because they chose to follow an alliance that failed them. Don’t make me become apart of this, please just walk away.”
“I can’t Renkai, this is what I do.. So into the middle of a war I go. They can’t spill blood in the mortal world if they don’t want us coming for them.”
“Why do you protect them?” asked Renkai as he placed his forehead to hers.
“Because we use to be one, we didn’t ask for this life it was given to us because of the hate they had for my father. Now I’ll do what he did and destroy every single one of them who doesn’t play by the rules.” he gave a slight smile.
“I had to fall in love with a hero.” she giggled and moved away from him.
“No Renkai you fell in love with a detective. Who just happens to be an immortal.” she touched Dorian on his back; he turned. and looked down at her.
The three of them walked out of the clearing, Dorian would follow her into what ever battle she chose to fight. Renkai followed her so he could help protect them from what was to come.
It was just after midnight when I walked out of the old city dinner, a underworld dive that served uncooked meat to those who craved a early night fix before they went hunting for the perfect prey. I was asked by my editor to leave this story alone, but I couldn't pretend I didn't see it happen. A week ago I was on my way home, and the rain was falling harder then ever. As usual I took the underground train to get back uptown to where my studio apartment was. The train stopped, when the doors opened; the lights on the platforms went black. All I could see was the lights of the passing trains. Even though a little weary I stepped outside of the train, and as soon as I hit the platform I saw a shadow move so fast. when his breeze past me a chill went through my body like a frost wind. It was as if I had just felt death. The lights came on and there on the platform were two bodies. They lay there on the cold tiled floor, I stood there looking them over. They were pale, and their was no blood. Just the stains upon the puncture holes on their necks. Could it be that I had seen the shadow of their killer. That night started my obsession, and when I found the doorway into the immortal world, there was no stopping me from finding him.
I walked the streets of Old City, hoping he would try to seek me out, hoping that my interest in him would make him interested in me. Its been three nights, and still nothing. My mind wandered back to the bodies on the platform. They had a calm look on their faces, they died peacefully or though it seemed. Maybe they did welcome death, maybe he was the savior they called upon because they couldn't do it themselves. I thought to myself, why would an immortal heed their call? Then a voice came from behind me and shook my soul to its core.
"Maybe it's because I was the only one who could hear them, they were looking for a release and I gave it to them" I turned, and there he was standing before me. the cold shadow that moved so swiftly in the night and I was lost for words. "You've been looking for me, you have questions?" he was magnificent, the markings on his face and his piercing grey eyes. I was taken back by him, to me he was beautiful. I saw no evil in him.
"Did they know you were to take their lives, did they ask you too?" he shook his head and turned away from me. "So why did you do it?" he looked back at me, then turned to face me again. "You had no right, Your not God."
He frowned at me, "How do you know, I could be someone's God. I heard their cries for help. I ended their suffering. Neither one of them wanted to face death, I made it easy for them." he looked into my eyes and I saw he believed he was right.
"How many of them have you murdered on this path to righteousness? he smiled at my sarcasm, then nodded his head. "Do you believe doing this will make up for all the evil you have done?"
"I killed hundreds of evil men and women in the years that I have lived, to taste the blood of a good person someone whose thoughts aren't vile and full of hate can be invigorating. Don't try and take that from me. You are here in my world seeking the truth, my truth isn't going to be the same as the rest of theirs. I don't really know the truth of my own existence any more, but helping a good human ease his or her pain makes me feel better about who I am."
"There is no evil in you, you do what you do just because you have too. You need to think your doing good so you can stop suffering, how come you don't end your life?" he looked into my eyes and I knew that he too yearned for it.
"Can I ask you something lady, could you take my life. would you end my suffering if I begged for it. If I could no longer endure this world, this life. Would you, could you take my life?" he looked into my eyes and his sadness overwhelmed me. "I welcome death, but death does not welcome me..."
