People want to be associated with a certain image. Like the Marlboro man sells the cowboy lifestyle or a name brand that sponsors a racer to advertise their names on their cars. It can be a bit misleading like scene in movie clip above but it's a matter of perception and how people associate a product when they think of it. So it is with people that sell themselves.
A person can edit how they are viewed or have a pattern of associating with only certain people. They can appeal to certain people by acting certain ways. I think it's a big part of politics to persuade others that they represent them though often they don't for the most part.
I personally am not motivated to associate myself with things just to sell an image. I'd much rather just be myself. I suppose in some ways I put on nice clothes when I go out in public rather than what I wear around the home alone that says other opinions matter in that venue but not to the point it betrays who I am. Some people are mostly about just that and do what they can to sell themselves being associated with a certain image. I suppose that's probably because I'm actually more comfortable being alone for the most part where I'm free to think outside of other influences. Still I do go around others at times and represent myself accordingly. Much like this entry being a public one rather than encrypted for only those that have proven themselves trustworthy or a private entry which I'm more prone to.
I actually don't mind being associated with what most consider a bad image because I want to appeal to those very few and rare people that think beyond the surface of normal perception. Those who question things for themselves rather than just follow others and or blend in with those that follow the popular opinion. Hard to distinguish such people when you fit in the good images in popular opinion. From the way others behave I'd imagine that seems foolish to them but it works for me.
The scrutiny I have doesn't work just outside of myself. Actually I've come to depend on my self discipline to know what's true and what's not and by certain degrees of veracity. My problem lies in communicating it to others as it tends to be jumbled and most don't think same way I do to express it well.
