I hope this works, yesterday was Senior Prom for my niece Amanda and VW39 did her makeup and took pictures. The theme was Vintage Circus so she picked her favorite black ballgown style with trims of silver and a bright red sash, so put her in black satin opera gloves, and a black top hat trimmed in the same shade red sash and called her the Ring Master. After years in the band we added the music note pin for style. She rocked the place. Which was really great since on Monday the principal called her into his office (her first ever visit there) and told her she wouldn't get to attend the prom because she had too many Doctor excused absences. Even though she has a 4.0 gpa and has won 2 scholarships to college!!!! Oh hell no, my sister and I went to see him and his response was her IEP only says she has a speech impediment no reason for missing school??? You jackass we notified you and your folks when she was diagnosed with ADD and placed on scheduled medicines that require her by state law to miss every damn month to see just that one doctor much less the dentist over her braces. Since she didn't want accommodations or everyone else to know she suffered a problem we didn't' tell anyone about it.
His response was "it's not like she needed a kidney" and "it's the site based council's rules".
It was obvious he was on a power trip, so my sister told her daughter to return to class, hold her head up and finish her school day we would investigate our options. Myself I called the principal an "asshole" and we left.
Then we contacted friends on the site based council and school board as well as advocates among the ADA scene. We also called the school superintendent and he said he'd have to check into it.
When members of the site based council found out they were being blamed they posted the school rules on facebook so all could see he had the option to allow or deny attendance on his own. They were not happy with him and when one heard that he actually said to us "it's not like she needed a kidney" as if he was qualified to determine any medical need in her case the superintendent got some extra calls about that.
In the meantime VW39 Amanda's Aunty since birth called the television news to check into an honor student with a 4.0 and winner of the scholarship sponsored by the news station itself was being denied prom.... well let's just say Amanda was notified Wed she was attending the prom and so this is how my favorite picture of her turned out.

Oh, that just makes my blood boil. What is it lately with teens being kicked out of prom or denied admittance? It's prom, for crying out loud. Let them have their moment. And, last time I checked, there was no such thing as too many doctor's excuses. My daughter has to be out frequently because of ... feminine issues. Our school hasn't said one word to us so far. We often have doctor's notes, but not always. There's a limit on parent notes, but not doctor's notes. So far I've kept under the parent note limits, but sometimes going to school for kids with health problems is not easy. It's not like these kids are playing hookey and causing trouble! Look at your niece: honor roll, band, scholarship winner ... Sounds like an upstanding kid to me!
I'm glad she got to go, and I'm glad she had some amazing advocates in her corner!
P.S. I love that theme, and she looks beautiful. :)

It's fairly new about the limit on Doctor's notes but they have it and this principal loves to be mean anyway, another student who is having very serious health issues and has to be home schooled most of this past year he tried to refuse the prom too saying if she was too ill to attend class she was too ill for prom. She got to go too even though it took 2 nurses hours to help her get ready and conceal her medical equipment and she could only stay 1 1/2 hours before returning home in extreme pain, she said it was so worth it for that bit of normal high school fun.
I repeat that man is just a plain old asshole for trying to mess with these kids at this point in their lives. I'd understand if they were in trouble all the time or flunking which is what the rule was actually written to address not just for him to play his petty power trip games with them.
