4/20/09: Based on recent events in my life I felt that I had to alter some of the details of this story.
Soft bellows of white
Like breath from a mortal on a winter morning
That is all she could see
So peaceful but for the stream of crimson at her feet
A stream so red that it seemed to burn with its own internal fire of red
Panic overwhelmed her, consumed her
A feeling her kind was never meant to feel
Up
Faster and faster she flew
Seeing more with her heart than her perfect eyes
How could this be?
How could she – a most powerful and perfect being let this happen?
The universe obeyed her commands
How dare this happen!
Pain
Feeling the tremor of his heartbeat growing fainter and fainter
The stars begin to turn their backs
Unable to bear witness to what they know
Slowly a brighter shade of white is seen
His longing for her is felt
Her fear can be tasted
The incandescence of his wings can be seen as they catch the rays of the setting sun in their folds
Faster still she falls among the clouds
Overwhelmed with joy as she finds him
Her heart dances
All will be fine
She and she alone will heal him
Prophecy be dammed
Yet something stirs within her soul
Something is not right
The crimson stream flows slower, pulsing with the final beats of his heart
She was not fast enough
NO! she cries out
Far away distant worlds tilt away from the sound
All creation halts for her pain
He smiles for now he knows the way of the world
She hears his cries and reaches for him, to brush the tears away
Just as she has done for him for a millennia
She kneels at his side and cries
“This cannot be”
“It must” he replies
Her eyes find his face
He smiles as he takes his final breath
“I love you” he whispers
His soul prays that she will one day understand her true meaning behind these words
Gently she picks him up, cradling him against her chest
Tears of fire stream down her face
Piercing the softness around her
She throws back her head in defiance of the light
Her black wings close softly around them both
She knows it is futile but she must protect him one last time
As she walks her heart beats with the pain of guilt
Guilt of all those time she wished to be free of heaven’s watchful eye
Free to roam the universe unburdened
She would trade all the riches in hell to have him back at her side
She would do the unthinkable to hear his laughter again
And to feel the softness of his kiss on her cheek
Anything to feel his stare as she walked to him
He gave up his place in the light so that she may have a chance to return
The ultimate sacrifice that she will never understand
Finally she reached her destination
At the foot of the Goddess she laid his body
Anger overwhelmed her
Defiance streamed through her veins
She wanted to turn her back on all she had ever learned
Her madness was returning
Knowing this, the Goddess reached out with love
The purest of love
And embraced her
“What would he have you do?” was all she asked
No other question needed to be posed
No answer was necessary
She fell to her knees and wept
The universe wept with her
It knew it was loosing a son of the light
Ages past before she could look upon his face
Why had he gone to battle in the dark without her?
How could he leave her?
A mortal summer wind blew past her
And on the winds she heard his voice again
“Would I ever truly leave?”
“Are we not two of the same whole?”
Quietly now she wept again
Soft tears of remorse for all she did not say
All she was unable to admit
Thoughts she never let herself believe
Silently she stood and raising her voice she pledged
“I vow to you here, in the ethereal, that I will never lose you, never stop loving you and I will never forget. I will find you and fight to have your soul return to the light. There may be another destined to be my mate but no creature will ever come close to holding my heart the way that you have.”
“We will find each other again”
