I have to add sulfuric acid to battery cells for my work and this is accomplished by transferring said sulfuric acid in a plastic pitcher and then poured into said cell through a funnel...a plastic pitcher...I shit you not. Of course the pitcher has to be filled from a huge vat and there can be, at times, a small amount of spillage, a small acidic spattering...should one be fiddle fucking around during this procedure, spillage can reach pretty high levels. One of these high levels splashed on the tops of my work boots about 4 months ago and if this happens, one's work boots are on borrowed time.
I've watched the tops of my work boots, 200 dollar work boots by the way, slowly get eaten away by the sulfuric acid. No...I've wiped them off repeatedly over the months, the sulfuric acid has simply kept devouring my poor boots. They almost...almost...didn't have a top to them at one point and that's where the fun began.
The sulfuric acid on the inside of my right boot started eating the tip of my right sock off every night and get this...not only did it eat the tip of my sock off, it was also eating the nail off my big right toe. After a number of weeks my right big toe nail was half gone...HALF GONE!
Want to know the interesting part?
There wasn't any pain...day after day...week after week...I watched that nail get shorter and shorter...sock after sock...right big toe nail shorter...right big toe nail shorter...no pain...it was crazy! Wouldn't you think getting your right big toe nail eaten off by sulfuric acid would hurt?! At the very least red blistered irritation? A burning of some kind?! Nothing...I've felt nothing...where there was supposed to be nail there was somewhat shinny skin...no nail...again...crazy.
2 weeks ago I bought new work boots and my right big toe nail is now growing back and I'm saving a fortune on socks.
Didn't hurt...that's weird...
