So most people are familiar with The Lost Boys, if you don't know it's an 80s vampire movie staring Keefer Sutherland and Corey Haim. It's very popular to this day and many people call it the best vampire movie ever made. Here's why they're wrong.
First of all it's mainstream and profit driven. Lost Boys is a movie made for the summer popcorn and teen crowd and not for full time vampire geeks like me. If you compare it to a movie like Interview with the Vampire, for example, the most obvious difference is that that movie is made for goths and Lost Boys is made for general audiences. Lost Boys is human centric, not vampire centric and most of the story revolves around the family and the vampires are very two dementional, they don't even have many lines except for David. That's what the mainstream likes; stories about people. But goths like me like stories about the vampires. The vampires are just monsters who eat people. That's it. I don't like the human family in the movie and they seem very dumb and annoying. Then the kids and granddad kill all the vampires. That sucks.
There are a couple of good scenes with the vampires that are very goth and well executed, like the train scene which is brilliant and very poetic. But most of the movie is about this family fighting evil then they win the end. If I were to make this movie it would be more about the vampires and less about the stupid family and the cutesy things they say, which I don't find funny or charming. Then at the end the vampires would kill the whole family and turn Micheal and leave. Basically like an Ann Rice story, she's a full time goth and gets it.
The Lost Boys is not a terrible movie but it's a good example of watered down mainstream vs the real culture. It's one of the most overrated movies of all time.-Maraselah
