Marius's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Part I

18:24 Mar 18 2006
Times Read: 600

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a disorder that can cause numbing and disabling pain in your hands and wrists. Carpal tunnel can make your hand and fingers “fall asleep” at night. You may need to shake your hands to free yourself of the numbing, tingling feeling. CTS arises when a nerve that runs through a narrow channel of ligaments and wrist bones is squeezed by fluid or inflamed tissue in the carpal tunnel.

This painful condition often results from repeated use of the wrists at grasping work and in sports, particularly when using a computer keyboard for extended periods of time. CTS is also common in women when pregnancy or menopause cause fluid buildup in the tissues. Diseases such as arthritis, diabetes and hypothyroidism may be a factor in the disorder.

What You Can Do

1) Rest the hand and wrist when possible.

If you have trouble sleeping, wear a wrist splint at night to reduce pressure on the nerve; splints are available at many drugstores.

2)At work, wear a splint if it relieves your pain.

3)Take anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen or aspirin, to reduce pain and swelling.

4)To ease discomfort, apply a cold pack at 10-minute intervals for one hour; a bag of ice wrapped in a washcloth works well, too.

To Prevent CTS

Change your hand position often when working, and take breaks. Also make sure your hands are in line with your forearms as you work.

Treatment

If pain and other symptoms persist or get worse despite a month of self-care, call your doctor for advice or make an appointment. If symptoms are present for more than 90 days in spite of treatment, surgical release is very useful.

So there it is the symptoms and the things I can do. I wake up at night and I can't handle the numbing feeling or the pain. It has woken me up almost every night since I noticed it. I have a splint and I use ice and now. I need to buy another splint and use more ice as it has moved to both hands now. I won't miss work so I guess home remedy better work or I'm going to go insane.

So another doctors appointment has come and gone. So the due date of June 20th has been changed to June14th. The baby is sitting breach since day one, so if *baby* doesn't move it will be a c-section. My Mother says not to worry about it, the *baby* will move ( who said I was worried?) So we'll see what it decides to do. This baby is active *WOW*....kicking and moving all over the place. Baby moves alot when I get up at 6 am for work and then when I come home, it moves alot to say hello again. When I go to bed, I play Glory Glory Man United on my cellphone and it kicks the phone, pretty cute I must say. If I place my hand on one said of her belly, the baby moves to it, then I start talking on the other side and the baby moves to my voice, Haley just LOVES that when I do it....LOL Ya she'll ask me if *we* are having fun, I say yes. Then I will tap on her belly and the baby will kick back, again she will ask "Having fun?" I say yes, we're playing patty cake!! LOL. She is very excited and a gorgous pregnant women. I love her glow....so until next time...

Wounds and Bruises

04:08 Mar 03 2006
Times Read: 617

So today Thursday the 2nd of March was a learning experience....a painful one. I was splitting rock when the partner I had hit the maul and it skipped off and hit my left leg, center of my shin. I handled it. Then to make it worse I had my hand caught between to pieces of rock squishing my left index finger. I got the day off with pay. Lesson learned. Keep fingers away from really big rock!!!
