Some of you may know that I have hepatitis C. I was diagnosed three years ago. I am not ashamed to talk about it, as I didn't get it by doing anything shameful - I was born with it.
I am supposed to get blood tests and a liver scan or biopsy every three years to make sure my liver damage has not progressed. The last time this was done, I was a stage 2 out of 4 stages ( the 4th being cirrhosis).
Well, I got my tri-yearly results today, and the levels of damage have actually reversed - I am now considered a stage 0-1. My blood tests all came back normal, and not only that, but I tested positive for a rare gene that means if I go in for treatment, there is a significantly increased chance of success. For perspective, the current success rates for curing the disease are 40%, and with new drugs on the market in the next year or so, the success rate goes up to about 70%. With this particular gene, the cure success rate is 90%. This is HUGE, and I am so so so so happy!
