The Journal Of Charles Hammond Part 7

I had lived in Germany for nearly five years. It was the summer of 1984 I had mostly been over seeing building projects for James. He wanted the four of us to have hotels and apartments across much of Germany and Austria.
I lived in a large apartment in Berlin that James gave to me. I was quite happy living there and all the building projects kept me busy.
As our hotels began bringing in a lot of money we were able to buy up more land and this meant we needed more builders and their was a shortage of skilled crafts men in Germany so we employed British workers and gave them accommodation near our building sites.
I was constantly having to deal with the union and listening to the rantings of the shop stewards. This brought me into the daylight a lot. Contrary to belief vampires can function in the day light. I don't burst into flames when a beam of sunlight hits me. The problem with the day light is on the eye's they are very sensitive so it’s necessary for me to always have my sunglasses.
Night is my natural time and with all the work I had to do during the day I was able to look after my apartment. I began looking for a cleaner and luckily I had a staff member from England who had brought his wife with him.
His name was Scott Grimshaw and he was not the nicest man to encounter. He reminded me of Thomas as he was tall well built and a heavy drinker with very little respect for anyone but he was a good worker.
His wife Gina was a petite little blonde who hardly said a word. Her husband forced her to take on the job as my cleaner and for the first few weeks of working for me she rarely spoke.
She always seemed nervous and would constantly check her watch. I paid her in cash every Friday afternoon and I noticed Scott was always waiting for her outside and he would snatch the money from her.
As the weeks went by it was becoming more obvious she was hiding bruise's. She was starting to struggle with cleaning the apartment and as the sleeves on her jumper moved up her arms I could see the marks. It was not usual for me to involve myself in a humans personal life but I found this to difficult to ignore.
I asked her to sit down and to let me look over her injuries. She was reluctant and she told me she fell down the stairs. I decided not to push her too hard so I began indulging her in conversation and trying to get to know her.
As my time in her company went on for a few weeks I found myself liking her a lot. She was well educated with a good sense of humour. She had a sweet kindness about her that drew me to her. It had been a long time since I was able to have a friendship with a woman.
She always had new bruises and a new excuse as to how she got them. I knew her husband was beating her and this made me want to kill him. I asked to see him one afternoon and began talking to him about his work and gradually I worked Gina into the conversation. He was clever and to anyone on the outside he would be able to easily fool into believing that he cared about her.
I offered Gina more money to do more hours at my home. She was happy as her husband agreed and I felt that she had developed feelings for me. The more our friendship blossomed the more comfortable she was around me. She began asking me question's about my life. I had to lie about that but I did reveal that I was an orphan from Manchester.
She was fascinated by the antiques in my home and I was able to tell her some of the history behind them. She began going through my books and she came across a book on vampires. It was a 300 year old book James gave me when I first came into this life. I forgotten that I had it. She was reading it and I quickly snatched it away from her. I angrily told her that I did not mind discussing my belongings but I took exception to her helping herself and not paying attention to her work. She had a very sad look on her pretty face and she apologised to me.
She worked in silence after my outburst and I began to feel awful for getting angry with her.
She finally spoke and asked me why I had a book on vampires as I didn't seem the type to be interested in that sort of thing. I just assured her that it was an old book and thats all it was. She then told me she liked vampires and she used to enjoy watching all the old films. I tried to change the subject but she continued to talk about how interesting it would be to meet a vampire. If she only knew she was working for one and all the terrible things I had done over the last 300 years she might of thought better of it.
I let her go home early and I removed the book and hid it away. She did not turn up at my home the next day I just got a visit from her husband at my office. He said she wasn't well and she would be back in a few days. I observed his hands I could see his knuckles were bruised and cut so I had no doubts about what the real reason for absence was.
I went home and slept and I dreamed of Maria and the night she died. I knew my dream was taunting me because I was a bad friend to Maria. I did nothing to save her and now I had a new friend in Gina now so was I to sit back and let her husband beat her to death or do I intervene and save her? If was to get involved this would mean showing my true self. As a vampire it’s hard to control my temper and not let people see what I am.
This gave me a big problem the only people who find out that Im a vampire do not have very long to live.

I find myself in similar situations a as real vampire...well as real as one can get. Brutality, suffering, death and decay are all essential parts of nature so why interfere? Yet the fact is though I'm a vampire I still went through my own suffering in life and even as a vampire am still subject the catabolic forces of nature just on a different scale than regular human people and it is hard to just let it happen. Well anyway wondering how Charles is going to deal with this. You don't want to lose a good worker as these things are hard to come by in the modern world where work ethics don't even seem to be a thing anymore.

Charles will deal with it same way any real man would. Because he's a vampire he will have a situation on his hands

Things I would love to do and who knows maybe one day I will😈

I want to be an air traffic controller and get drunk
I want to put razor blades in bags of Haribo
I want to find a cure for diseases and not tell anybody
I want Elon Musk to wake up and find out he hasn't got any money left
I want to put Keir Starmer and Sadiq Khan in an old shed and set it on fire so I can dance around the flames
I want to cut down the rain forest and tell everyone Greta Thunberg did it
I want my family to eat the Sunday roast I made with deadly poison
