Few questions for you...

1. What makes someone an elder?

2. If a person is considered a elder in one area,is he/she an elder in the entire community?

3. How many years or much time does it take to be an elder?

4. Do you need to be an elder to start a small group?

My response...

Well, first off, let me say that being an elder is something you earn, not something you can simply ask for and and you shall receive.

1) An elder is somebody that can represent the community and what it stands for. Eldership is not judged by age, ethnicity, beliefs, etc. Here is an example of what an elder should be and what one shouldn't be.

(should)

George is 35 and is someone who has been in the lifestyle for quite some time. He has a Ph.D in psychiatry and works as a computer technician making a steady pay. He hosts quabals on a regular basis at a haven and also does community work and study sessions with his students.

(shouldn't)

Bob is 19 and has only been in the lifestyle for 2 years. He works part-time at McDonalds and lives in the basement of his parent's house. In his free time he likes to chat with people online about how he runs a house and calls himself Lord Robert Jensing. (that was a made-up name btw)

2) As I stated, eldership is something that must be earned. You may be an elder for one house, but if you move out of state and find a new house, you will be landed straight back to the beginning so you can learn over the new house's beliefs and standards. In some cases, if you transfer to a sister-house of your previous one, in most cases your eldership will be transfered over as well.

3) Eldership is just like a job promotion.

Example: Larry has been working for his job for 10 years and has done all that is required, but nothing more. Edward has only been working for the corporation for a year but has gone above and beyond to help the company and it's workers, thus he got the promotion over Larry.

4) Before worrying about if you're an elder as far as Houses are concerned, you first need to seek approval of all other residing Houses within that certain halo. One you prove yourself worthy enough for them, then you can worry about forming a House. But, generally speaking, it would help a lot if you were an elder as far as group-forming is concerned...
