I just keep thinking the last time we were all together,I said why is it death that always brings us all together.
Your always there to watch over us and you are forever thought of... I miss you so very much.
That Old Black Magic
Getting Specific about Magical Ethics
Sometimes a cliche just wears out. It loses meaning, or worse, begins to
say
things we never meant. I think it's time to retire the phrase "black
magic."
Saying "black" when we mean "evil" is nasty nonsense. In the first place,
it
reinforces the racist stereotypes that corrupt our society. And that's not
all. Whenever we say "black" instead of "bad," we repeat again the big lie
that darkness is wrong. It isn't, as people who profess to love Nature
should
know.
Darkness can mean the inside of the womb, and the seed germinating within
the
Earth, and the chaos that gives rise to all truly new beginnings. In our
myths, the one who goes down to the underworld returns with the treasure.
Even death, to the Wiccan understanding, is well-earned rest and comfort,
and
a preparation for new birth. Using "black" to mean "bad" is a blasphemy
against the Crone.
But even if we no longer speak of magic as "black" or "white," we still
need
to think and speak about the ethics of magic. Although black is not evil,
some actions are evil. It simply is not true that anything a person is
strong
enough or skilled enough to do is OK, nor should doing what we will ever be
the whole of the law for us. We need a clear and specific vocabulary that
enables us to choose wisely what we will do.
We need to replace the word "black," not simply to drop it. Some Pagans
have
tried using "negative" as their substitute, but that turned out to be
confusing. For some people, "negative" means any spell to diminish or
banish
anything. Some things - tumors, depression, bigotry - are harmful. There's
nothing wrong with a working to get rid of bad stuff. "Left-handed" is
another common term for wrongful practice, very traditional, but just as
ignorant, superstitious and potentially harmful as the phrase "black magic"
itself. So in Proteus we tried using the word "unethical." That's a lot
better - free of extraneous and false implications - but still too vague.
Gradually, I began to wonder whether using any one word, "black" or
"unethical" or whatever, might just be too general and too subjective.
Perhaps all I really tell a student that way is "I don't like that."
I won't settle for blind obedience. If ethical principles are going to
survive the twin tests of time and temptation, people need to understand
just
what to avoid, and why. Even more important, they need a basis for figuring
out what to do instead. Especially when it comes to projective magic.
Projective magic means active workings, the kind in which we project our
will
out into the world to make some kind of change. This is what most people
think of when they use the word magic at all. Quite clearly, magic that may
affect other people is magic that can harm. This is the basis of the
proverb
"a Witch who can't hex can't heal." Either you can raise and direct power,
or
you can't. Your strength and skill can be used for blessing or for bane.
The
choice - and the karma - are yours.
Just as some people feel that strength and skill are their own
justification,
others feel that any projective magic is always wrong - that it is a
distraction from our one true goal of union with the Divine or a willful
avoidance of the judgments of Karma. I think these attitudes are equally
inconsistent with basic Wiccan philosophy.
We are taught that we will find the Lady within ourselves or not at all,
that
the Mother of All has been with us from the beginning. We can't now
establish
a union that was always there. All we can do, all we need to do, is become
aware. Knowing what it feels like to heal and empower, again and again till
you can't dismiss it as coincidence, is one of the most powerful methods
for
awakening that awareness. It makes no sense to say that the direct
experience
and exercise of our indwelling divinity distracts from the Great Work.
Indeed, it is this intimate connection between our magic and our
self-realization that our ethics protect. Wrongful use of magic will choke
the channel. No short term gain could ever compensate for that.
The karmic argument against practical workings seems to me to arise from a
paranoid and defeatist world view. Even if we assume that the hardships in
this life were put there by the Gods for a reason, how can we be so sure
that
the reason was punishment? Perhaps instead of penance to be endured, our
difficulties are challenges to be met. Coping and dealing with our
problems,
learning magical and mundane skills, changing ourselves and our world for
the
better - in short, growing up - is that not what the Gods of joy and
freedom
want from us?
One of the most radically different things about a polytheistic belief
system
is that each one of us has the right, and the need, to choose which
God/desses will be the focus of our worship. We make these choices knowing
that whatever energies we invoke most often in ritual will shape our own
further growth. Spiritual practices are a means of self-programming. So we
are responsible for what we worship in a way that people who take their One
God as a given are not.
Think about this: what kind of Power actively wants us to submit and
suffer,
and objects when we develop skills to improve our own lives? Not a Being
I'd
want to invite around too often!
So it will not work for us to rule out projective magic completely; nor
should we. Total prohibitions are as thoughtless as total permissiveness or
blind obedience. Ethical and spiritual adults ought to be able to make
distinctions and well-reasoned choices. I offer here a start toward
analyzing
what kinds of magic are not ethical for us.
Baneful magic is magic done for the explicit purpose of causing harm to
another person. Usually the reason for it is revenge, and the
rationalization
is justice. People who defend the practice of baneful magic often ask "but
wouldn't you join in cursing another Hitler?"
For adults there is no rule without exceptions. If you think you would
never
torture somebody, consider this scenario: in just half an hour the bomb
will
go off, killing everybody in the city, and this terrorist knows where it is
hidden...
It's a bad mistake to base your ethics on wildly unlikely cases, since none
of us honestly knows how we would react in that kind of extreme. Reasonable
ethical statements are statements about the behaviors we expect of
ourselves
under normally predictable circumstances.
We all get really angry on occasion, and sometimes with good cause. Then
revenge can seem like no more than simple justice. The anger is a normal,
healthy human reaction, and should not be repressed. But there's no more
need
to act it out in magic than in physical violence. Instead of going for
revenge - and invoking the karmic consequences of baneful magic - identify
what you really need. For example, if your anger comes from a feeling that
you have been attacked or violated, what you need is protection and safe
space. Work for the positive goal, it's both more effective and safer.
The consequences of baneful magic are simply the logical, natural and
inevitable psychological effects. Even in that rare and extreme situation
when you may decide you really do have to use magic to give Hitler a heart
attack, it means you are choosing by the same choice to accept the act's
karma. Magical attack hurts the attacker first.
The only way I know how to do magic is by use of my imagination, by
visualizing or otherwise actively imagining the end I want, and then
projecting that goal with the energy of emotional/physiological arousal.
All
the techniques I know either help me to imagine more specifically or to
project more strongly. So the only way I can send out harm is by first
experiencing that harm within my own imagination. Instant and absolute
karma
- the natural, logical and inevitable outcomes of our own choices.
I would think, also, that somebody dumb enough to do such workings often
would soon lose the ability to imagine specifically, as their sensitivity
dulled in sheer self-defense. That callusing effect is the reality behind
the
pious proverb that says "if you abuse it, She'll take it away."
But not every other magician is ethical. Psychic attacks do happen. Should
we
not defend ourselves? Of course we should. Leaving ourselves open to
psychic
attack is no good example of the autonomy and assertiveness our chosen Gods
expect. But first, how can we be sure what we are experiencing really is
psychic attack?
The fantasy of psychic attack is often a convenient excuse that allows us
to
avoid looking at our own shortcomings. When lack of rest or improper
nutrition is the cause of illness, or a project isn't completed on time
because of distraction, it's a real temptation to put the blame outside
ourselves. Doing this too easily betrays our autonomy just as badly as meek
submission to attack does. Then, to compound matters, projected blame
becomes
an excuse for unjust revenge -- and that is baneful magic without excuse.
Once in a rare while, some fool really does try to throw a whammy. It's
hard
to predict when you might be targeted. Passive shields are always a good
idea. Like a mirror, these are totally inactive until somebody sends
unwelcome energy. Then a shield will protect you completely and bounce back
whatever is being thrown. You may not even know consciously when your
shield
is working, but the result is perfect justice.
Perfect justice; elegant and efficient. You won't hurt anybody out of
paranoia or by mistake. And perfect protection, even though we do not have
perfect knowledge.
Bindings, according to some, are completely defensive. They do not harm,
only
restrain. But imagine yourself being bound - perhaps by someone who
believes
themselves justified - and notice the feeling of impotence and frustration.
Binding is bane from the viewpoint of the bound.
Even if restraint were truly not harm, bindings are just plain poor
protection. They target a particular person or group. What if you suspect
the
wrong person? Somebody harmless is bound and your actual attacker is not
bound. Shields, which cover you, not your supposed enemy, will cover you
against any enemy, known or unknown.
So, baneful magic, besides being painful in the short run and crippling in
the long run, is never necessary. There are better ways of self protection,
and retribution is the business of the Gods.
Coercive magic is magic that targets another person to make them give us
something we want or need. When most people think of the "Magic Power of
Witchcraft," this is what they have in mind.
The spell to make the teacher give you a good grade, or the supervisor give
you a good evaluation, the spell to make the personnel officer or renting
agent choose you, the spell to attract that cute guy, all are examples of
coercive magic.
So, what's wrong with high grades, a good job, a raise, a nice apartment
and
a sexy lover? There's nothing at all wrong with those goals. An it harm
none,
do what ye will. As long as nobody is hurt, go for it! But don't strive
toward good ends by coercive means.
Although there is no deliberate intent to do harm or cause pain in coercive
workings, other people are treated as pawns. Their autonomy and their
interests are ignored.
For Pagans, to do this is total hypocrisy. We profess to follow a religion
of
immanence, one that places ultimate meaning and value in this life on this
Earth, here and now. We claim to see every living thing, humans included,
as
a sacred manifestation. To do honor to this indwelling divinity, we place
great value on our own personal autonomy. How can we then justify treating
other people as objects for our use?
Nor is it harmless. Forcing the will, controlling the independent judgement
of another human being, is harm. Once again, empathy leads to
understanding.
Just imagine you are the person whose will and judgement is being
externally
controlled. How does puppethood feel? From the viewpoint of the target, the
harm is palpable.
The Pagan and Wiccan community as a whole is also hurt by coercive magic.
One
of the main reasons people fear and hate Witches is our reputation for
controlling others. This is an old, dirty lie, created by the invading
religion in an attempt to discredit the indigenous competition. Today, that
reputation is mostly perpetuated by people who claim to be "our own," who
teach unethical coercive magic by mail order to strangers whose ethical
sensitivity cannot be evaluated long distance. May the Gods preserve the
Craft!
People who are connected to the situation, but invisible to us, may also be
seriously hurt: the cute guy's fiancee, the other applicant for that job.
What you think of as a working designed only to bring good to yourself can
bring serious harm to innocent third parties, and the karma of their pain
will be on you.
That isn't the only way an incomplete view of the situation can backfire.
There's a traditional saying that goes, "be careful about what you ask for,
because that's exactly what you will get." What if he is gorgeous, but
abusive? What if the apartment house is structurally unsound? Better to
state
your legitimate needs (love in my life, a nice place to live) and let the
Gods deal with the details.
Finally, remember this: asking specifically limits us to what we now know
or
what we can now imagine. But I remember a time when I could not have
imagined
being a priestess. What if the cute guy in the office is perfectly OK, but
your absolutely perfect soul-mate will be in the A+P next Wednesday? The
more
specifically targeted your magic is, the more you limit yourself to a life
of
tautology and missed chances.
And beyond all the scenario spinning lies the instant karma, the natural,
logical and inevitable consequence of the act. It's more subtle than in the
case of baneful magic, since you are not trying to imagine and project
pain,
but the damage is still real.
Every time you treat another human being as a thing to be pushed and pulled
around for your convenience and pleasure, you are reinforcing your own
alienation. The attitude of being removed from and superior to other people
takes you out of community. As the attitude strengthens, so will the
behavior
it engenders. The long term result of coercive magic, as with mundane forms
of coercion, is isolation and loneliness.
Are you beginning to think that magic is useless? Did I just rule out all
the
good stuff: love charms, job magic, spells for good grades? Not at all. It
is
not only ethical but good for you to do lots of magic to improve your own
life. Whenever it works you will get more than you asked for - because
along
with whatever you asked for comes one more experience of your own
effectiveness, your power-from-within.
Work on yourself and your own needs and desires without targeting other
people. Then feel free! Ask for what you want. Visualize it and raise power
for it and act in accordance on the material plane. "I need a caring and
horny lover with a good sense of humor." "I want an affordable apartment
near
where my coven meets with a tree outside my window." "I need to be at my
best
when I take that exam next week." Fulfill your dreams, and sometimes let
the
Gods surprise you with gifts beyond your dreams.
Manipulative magic is magic that targets another person for what we think
is
"their own good," without regard for their opinions in the matter. In the
general culture around us, this is normal. As you read this, you may have
some friend or relative praying for you to be "saved" from your evil Pagan
ways and returned to the fold of their preference. These people mean you
well. By their own lights, they are attempting to heal you. We work from a
very different thealogical base.
As polytheists, we affirm the diversity of the divine and the divinity of
diversity. If there is no one, true, right and only way in general, do we
dare to assume that there is one obvious right choice for a person in any
given situation? If more than one choice may be "right," how can one person
presume they know what another person would want without asking them first?
No life situation ever looks the same from outside as it does to the person
who is experiencing it. Are you sure you even have all the facts? Are you
fully aware of all the emotional entanglements involved? Perhaps that
illness
is the only way they have of getting rest or getting attention. Perhaps
they
stay in that dead end job because it leaves them more energy to concentrate
on their music. How do you know till you ask?
And, to further complicate the analysis, it's possible that the person you
are trying to help would agree with you about the most desirable outcome,
but
fears and hates the very idea of magic. They have as much of a right to
keep
magic out of their own life, as you have to make it part of yours!
Our religion teaches that the sacred lives within each person, that we can
hear the Lady's voice for ourselves if we only learn to listen. "... If
that
which you seek, you find not within yourself, you will never find it
without." In behavioral terms, when you take another person's opinion about
their own life seriously, you are reinforcing them in thinking and choosing
for themselves. The more you do this, the more you encourage them to listen
for the sacred inner voice.
Conversely, whenever you ignore or override a person's feelings about their
own life, you are discounting those feelings and discouraging the kind of
internal attention that can keep the channels to wisdom open. Although
well-intentioned meddling may actually help somebody in the short run, in
the
longer run it trains them to dependency and indecision. Few intentional
banes
damage as severely. This is especially true because even the untrained and
unaware will instinctively resist overt ill-will, but in our culture we are
trained to receive "expert" interference with gratitude.
Check by asking yourself, "who's in charge here?" The answer to that will
tell you whether you are basically empowering or undermining the person you
intend to help.
And, as usual, the effects go both ways. The same uninvited intervention
that
fosters passivity in the recipient will foster arrogance in the "rescuer."
It's control and ego-inflation masked as generosity. It's very seductive.
If you make this a habit, you will come to believe that other people are
incompetent and powerless. Then what happens when you need help? Your
contempt will make it impossible for you to see what resources surround
you.
Manipulative magic is ultimately just as alienating as coercive magic - and
it's a much prettier trap!
The way to avoid the trap is to do no working affecting another person
without that person's explicit permission. Proteans are pledged to this,
and
I think it's a good idea for anybody.
You don't need to wait passively for the person to ask. It's perfectly all
right to offer, as long as you are willing to sometimes accept "no" for
your
answer. For the person who believes s/he is unworthy or who is simply too
shy, offering help is itself a gift. Taking their opinion seriously is an
even greater gift: respect.
The rule is that whenever it is in any way physically possible to ask, you
must ask. If it's not important enough to pay long distance charges, it
certainly isn't important enough to violate a friend's autonomy. If asking
is
literally not possible, then and only then, here are a few exceptions:
Sometimes an illness or injury happens very suddenly, and the person is
unconscious or in a coma before you could possibly ask them. If you know
that
this person is generally comfortable with magic, you may do workings to
keep
their basic body systems working and allow the normal healing process the
time it needs. If they are opposed to magic, for whatever reason, back off!
Traditionally, an unconscious person is understood to be temporarily out of
their body. Maintaining their body in habitable condition is preserving
their
option, not choosing for them. Doing maintenance magic requires a lot of
sensitivity. At some point, the time may come when you should stop and let
the person go on. Be sure to use some kind of divination to help you stay
aware.
This is a hard road. It may be your lover, your child, lying there
helpless.
Any normal human being would be tempted to drag them back, to force them to
stay regardless of what is truly best for them, regardless of what they
want.
Don't repress these feelings, they do no harm, even though your actions
might. It takes great strength and non-possessive love to recognize that
your
loved one knows their own need. You may be calling them back to a crippled
body, to a life of pain. You may be calling them back from the ecstasy of
the
Goddess. And this is no more your right than it would be to murder them.
If a person is temporarily not reachable, you may charge up a physical
object, such as an appropriate talisman or some incense. When you present
it
to them, give them a full explanation. It is their choice whether to keep
or
use your gift. By interposing an object between the magic and the target in
this way, you can work the magic in Circle, with the coven's power to draw
on, and still get the person's permission before the magic is triggered.
With all these rules about permission, perhaps it would be safer to work
only
on ourselves? Safer, yes, but not nearly as good. If you have permission,
you
may do any working for another person that you might do for yourself.
Coercive magic is just as unacceptable when somebody else asks for it, and
you may not do manipulative magic on your friend's mother, even at your
friend's request. The permission must come from the magic's intended target
and from nobody else. With proper permission, working magic for others is
good for all concerned.
Every act of magic has two effects. One is the direct effect, the healing
or
prosperity working or whatever was intended. The other is a minute change
in
the mind and the heart of the person who does the working. Everything we
experience, and especially everything that we do in a wholehearted and
focused way - the only way effective magic can be done - changes us. Each
experience leaves its tiny trace, but the traces are cumulative. They mold
the person we will become. Our karma is our choice.
Instant karma can also be good karma. Logical, natural and inevitable
outcomes can be desirable. When you send out good, what you send it with is
love. Love is the driving force. When you let love flow freely, the channel
down to love's wellspring stays clear and open. When you send out good, you
direct it along the web of person-to-person connection, and awareness of
that
web is reinforced. The totality of that web is the basis of community.
When you send out good it feels good. In the same way that sending out bane
requires imagining pain, sending out blessing requires imagining pleasure,
strongly and specifically. And, when you send out good, just the same as
when
you call it to yourself, you reinforce your sense of effectiveness in the
world. Blessings grow in the fertile ground of mutuality, to the benefit of
all.
A pattern is becoming visible. In baneful magic, the magician intends to
harm
the target. In coercive magic, the intent toward the target is neutral. In
manipulative magic, the magician actually means the target well. But no
matter how different the intent may be, in all three cases magic is done to
affect another person without that person's permission. In all three cases,
the target, the practitioner and ultimately the community are all hurt. And
in all three cases, there are safer and more effective ways to reach the
valid goals that we mean to aim for.
So, perhaps there is a descriptive word that covers all wrongful magical
workings after all. How about "non-consensual" or "invasive" magic?
There's one thing left to examine: the paradox of making rules to protect
personal autonomy.
If we make some of our choices as a community, by discussing things
together
and arriving at a common understanding about what magical behaviors are
acceptable among us, then we choose and shape the kind of community we
become.
Or we could give up our right to choose, because we feel we shouldn't tell
each other what to do. Some people believe that a refusal to set community
standards promotes personal autonomy. It never has before.
Appeals to individual rights can be real seductive. None of us wants Big
Brother looking over our shoulders, telling us what to do "for our own
good."
For Witches in particular - members of a religious minority with bad image
problems - this is a very legitimate fear. But make sure when somebody
talks
about "rights" without specifying something like "religious practice
rights"
or "the right to consensual sex," that you find out just what "rights" they
mean.
Rhetoric about "rugged individualism" has been used in recent history to
fast
talk us into letting the rich or strong dominate all our lives. Without
anything to stop them, they can destroy the forestland, or deny jobs or
apartments to "cultists." Personal autonomy for most of us is diminished
when
we allow that.
Magic can be used for dominance, just the same as muscle or money. There is
no difference, ethically, between the magical and the mundane. We are not
obligated to tolerate power trippers among us. We are not obligated to run
our own community by the slogans and ground rules of the dominator culture.
Thinking about "rights," or about "laws" for that matter, in the abstract
leads to "all or nothing" thinking - immature and slogan driven. I don't
think we should ever "just say" anything. We need a deeper and more mature
analysis. We need to ask questions like "right to do what?" and "law
against
what?" We need to get away from absolutes and to look in practical terms at
the advantages or disadvantages of our choices.
Once more, our religion itself shows us the way to steer between the false
choices. "An it harm none, do what you will." What a person does that
affects
only herself - magical or mundane - is truly nobody's business but her own.
For example, consensual sexual behavior affects only the participants. But
toxic waste dumping affects everybody in the watershed.
As long as we look at behavior in terms of private choices or individual
will, we obscure the distinction that really makes a difference. If we're
serious about wanting to give each of us the most possible control over our
own lives, then decisions should be made by all the people affected by the
behavior - not just by the people acting.
As soon as another person is magically targeted, that other person is
affected. If we allow such targeting without consent, we are not supporting
personal autonomy, we are subverting it!
When the behavior begins to affect us all - for example when real estate
development threatens the salt marshes, and ultimately the air supply - or,
very specifically, when invasive magic erodes the trust we need to work
together - then we have a right to protect ourselves as a community. No
ideology should turn us into passive victims when something we hold
precious
stands to be destroyed.
Invasive magic hurts the target first, and soon the actor, but in the long
run it hurts all of us. It's been so long since we've been able to meet
together, share our knowledge, help one another in need. Pagan community is
very new, and still very fragile. It can only grow in safe space.
1. Who here thinks they are a Witch? Well, aside from the atrocious
grammar,
this question is rather silly. For most of us, Witch is a religious
identity,
so asking if we "think" we are Witches is much like asking if someone
"thinks" they are a Baptist, or a Methodist, etc. If someone tells you that
they practice the religion of Witchcraft, they are a Witch.
2. Who here has the most power? Where do you get your power from?
Witchcraft
isn't about power. It's about the Gods, and service to Them. When
questioners
speak of power, what they generally mean is magick, not Witchcraft, though
they do not realize it. We'll get to the topic of magick in a few minutes.
3. Prove to me that you are a Witch. I no more need 'prove' that I am a
witch
than you need prove you are a Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, atheist, etc.
Witchcraft is a belief system, a religion like any other. It is simply
what I
believe, and it therefore requires no more proof than the statement "I am
an
Episcopalian" or "I am a Mormon" would.
4. Are you a good Witch or a bad Witch? There are good Witches and bad
Witches just as there are good Christians and bad Christians. Witches are
people just like everyone else. To me, a "bad" Witch is an inept one,
rather
like a Christian who breaks the 10 Commandments is a "bad" Christian.
5. Are you guys like those girls in the movie The Craft? Who was that Manot
guy? No, we are nothing like those children. The only thing in that film
which was remotely portrayed in an accurate manner was the theory of the
Law
of Three, where it was explained to the girls that what they sent out
returns
to them threefold. The rest, including the "deity" they attempted to invoke
was Hollywood fiction. And by the way, the only "glamour spell" we know of
that changes hair color involves invoking Miss Clairol, or the Goddess
L'Oreal and an application of the sacred peroxide. Or a trip to a really
good
hairstylist and a major outlay of cash!
6. So you guys worship Satan, right? Satan is a Judeo-Christian-Zoroastrian
concept which holds no meaning for Witches. There is no Satan in our deity
structure, which predates the idea of Satan. Witches do not believe in
Hell,
Satan, or generally speaking, the concept of an absolute evil (except of
course my ex-husband, but that's a story for another day).
7. So you don't believe in God? What do you believe in? Well, not the
Christian concept of God. Most Witches are polytheistic or pantheistic, and
believe in an immanent form of Deity. I believe that the Divine is too
large
for humans to grasp all at once, so we tend to break it down into something
we can more easily understand. For Christians, this is the Trinity, or
Jesus
and God (and for some, Mary). Most Witches worship the Divine in its Twin
Aspects of God and Goddess. We see the God and Goddess as archetypal
representations of the polarities of the Divine. Many of us break this down
still further, by working with the aspects of Deity from one pantheon or
another, such as Greek gods or Celtic, or Egyptian, etc. Some Witches work
more with one polarity or the other. Dianic Witches, for example, tend to
work only with the Goddess. All these aspects, or faces of the Divine
represent the same Source. That force in the Universe is the same Source
that
is worshipped by other faiths, including the Christian faiths. We believe
that force manifests in myriad ways, and that all names for it are equally
valid. By that respect, we all worship the same Source. Witchcraft is an
earth-based nature religion. We recognize the hand of the Divine in the
Universe around us, the trees, the wind, the sea, all of it. We see the
interconnectedness of all things in the Universe. All of the Web of Life
reflects the beauty and power of the Divine. There are strong likenesses
between this ideology and the belief system of Native Americans, in fact
many
indigenous peoples hold similar attitudes and beliefs. Witchcraft is also
highly an individualistic and experiential pathway. We do not march in
lockstep with one another. There is no hierarchy, no "Head Witch" as it
were.
If you ask ten Witches a question about what they believe or how to
practice,
you are likely to get a number of different responses. We are very
unorganized (as opposed to disorganized); in fact it is often said that
organizing Witches is rather like trying to herd cats.
8. What do Witches believe happens after you die? Witches tend to be more
concerned about the here and now, but many of us believe in reincarnation
in
one form or another. I believe that between lives, we rest and plan for the
next, choosing circumstances to be born into which will provide us with
the
greatest opportunity for growth and spiritual development. Some Witches
call
the place we rest between lives the Summerland. This does not mean that I
think your life is all planned out ahead of time, rather that you determine
a
few key factors based on the lessons you are trying to learn. For instance,
you choose to be born into a poor family, or a rich one, or you choose to
be
born able-bodied or not, etc. What you do with those circumstances once you
get here is up to you.
9. What do Witches do? Well, as you can see from the preceding, we worship.
We also raise families, hold down jobs, shop (I am particularly good at
that), have hobbies, pay bills, just like other people. What most people
really mean when they ask this question is "tell me about magick."
10. What is magick, and why do you spell it that way? We spell magick with
a
k to differentiate it from stage magic, the kind illusionists do. Magick is
the focused and directed application of energy to a specific purpose. It's
that simple. The energy used is generally either personal energy (which can
be draining if you are not careful) or that Universal energy which is part
of
the Divine. Witches are not the only people who can do magick, anyone can
learn how. Magick carries serious lessons about responsibility however, and
is not to be trifled with. What you send out into the Universe returns to
you. Most Witches recognize the Threefold Law. The Law of Three states that
what you send out returns to you three times, like a pendulum set in
motion.
The three part tends to be metaphorical, but the principle is the same
regardless of the number of times it kicks back at you...in my case it is
often 4.6 rather than 3! Some feel that the intensity of the magickal
working
determines the number of times it returns. This is Natural Law and
unavoidable. It's like gravity...it just is. When you do magick you are
responsible for all possible consequences of your actions, whether or not
you
intended or foresaw those consequences. This is why many of the wisest
Witches rarely practice formal magick. It carries serious karmic weight,
and
is reserved for those times when more mundane means have been exhausted,
and
when the practitioner is willing to accept the responsibility for whatever
results the magick creates.
11. Do you practice black magick? Magick is inherently neutral. It has no
color. The intent of the magickal practitioner "colors" the magick.
Negative
or manipulative magick is that which is generally understood to be "black"
(though some Witches say black magick is that which uses personal energy,
and
white that which uses earth energy - remember I told you 10 Witches, many
responses!). When you think about the Threefold Law, you realize how
self-defeating negative magick is. I's is not very intelligent to send out
negative energy, since you will get it back harder than you sent it.
Fortunately, stupid people are not too adept magickally (it takes brains
and
skill), so by and large those who claim to run around casting "evil spells"
on people are laughably inept. Never conjure up what you can't conjure
down.
And remember that if you conjure it up, you clean it up!
12. What exactly IS a spell? Spells are merely a projection of intention
and
desire, a form of concentrated prayer...with props. The props are a focus
and
have little inherent power. Working at a specific phase of the moon which
is
conducive to your aims, or working with herbs which have some relation to
what you are attempting can help you to focus and concentrate the energy,
but
magick, as I stated before, is all mental. You do not "need" props or
external aids to cast a spell, the magick is in you!
13. What about love spells?? Love spells are the magickal equivalent of
rape.
They are about removing the free will of another; that is control, not
love.
They are manipulative and very negative magick. Do you want someone to love
you, or a spell? Love spells definitely would fall under the category of
"black" magick, and carry a very heavy price. I have never seen one work
the
way it was intended, and I have seen a lot of people hurt by them. No
matter
what the temptation, where love spells are concerned, just say no!
14. What is Wicca? Wicca is a modern interpretation of Witchcraft, based on
the work of Gerald Gardner, et. al. Gardner took pieces of an older
tradition
and mixed them with aspects of ceremonial magick. Today Wicca is a lively
and
growing group of traditions in the Craft, though not, by far, the only
traditions. Many Wiccans today also combine some New Age concepts and
practices into their belief system.
15. Are male Witches called Warlocks? Not most of them! Male witches are
called witches. The word warlock comes from waer loga which means
oath-breaker, or traitor, and is therefore considered an insult by most
witches. There are a few traditions within the Craft which use this term
for
male practitioners (again, many Witches, many answers), but on the whole
you
would be a lot safer referring to male Witches as Witches. After all, we do
not use two different terms for practitioners of other faiths. We do not
refer to Catholics and Catholicesses, or Presbyterians and
Presbyterianettes!
16. Can you be a Christian and a Witch too?? This is a very controversial
question in the Craft community. It all depends on how you define the word
Witch. If you define it as a magickal practitioner without reference to
religion, certainly. If you define it as a religion, and you use God, Jesus
and Mary as your deities, I suppose, though I personally have trouble
reconciling the Witch's concept of personal responsibility with that of a
Divine Savior. I do know people for whom this works, however, and they call
themselves Christian Witches. If it works for them, that is all that
matters.
The point of spirituality is communion with the Divine; it's a very
personal
journey and no one else can determine how the Divine should or does
manifest
to someone else.
17. Do you have to be born a Witch or can you become one? You can be born
into a family which practices the religion of Witchcraft, but that no more
makes you a Witch than being born into a family of Methodists makes you a
Methodist. I was born into such a family; still I had to study hard and
choose the faith I wanted to follow. This is again one of those questions
that tends to use the word Witch interchangeably with the idea of magick.
One
can be born with a flair for magick, like one can be born with a gift for
music. Not everyone can be a concert pianist, but we can all learn to play
the piano. Those raised in families with old roots in the magickal
practices
tend to be aware of those gifts and to have them nurtured at an earlier age
than other people, but those gifts can be developed in anyone. I will say
that like musical gifts runs in some families, magickal talent can also be
handed down, but just like a musical family needs to offer the child the
opportunity to develop his or her gift, without hard work and commitment
the
magickal gifts will not develop to their potential. Whether you are born
to a
magickal family, or come to the path later, the same hard work and
commitment
is required.
Astrology and The Four Elements
by Charlie Higgins
Empedocles, a fifth century BCE Greek philosopher, originated the terms
Fire,
Earth, Air, and Water. He explained the nature of the universe as an
interaction of two opposing principles called love and strife manipulating
the four elements. He stated that these four elements were all equal, of
the
same age, that each rules its own province, and each posseses its own
individual character. Different mixtures of these elements produced the
different natures of things.
Most philosophers and alchemists also believed that the four elements
exhibited itself in man as four varying natures and that one was more
prevalent in each individual than the other three. An individual leaned
more
to one particular type rather than possessing equivalent amounts of all
four.
Empedocles said that those who have near equal proportions of the four
elements are more intelligent and have the most exact perceptions.
Astrology uses the elemental sign of an individual as one of it's
delineation
tools. I remember when I first started studying Astrology one of the first
things I encountered was the Elemental Signs - and that was it...maybe
every
now and then some article would list a few keywords but no explanations. I
got a general idea of the meaning of the Elements but never found any
author
who explained them in depth. Later, when I had a more solid grasp of
Astrology I wondered why the Elemental signs were just mentioned and then
set
aside. I often wondered if the Astrologer felt they were too basic or they
just didn't understand their relative importance. I soon found out that it
wasn't that they were unimportant but that other delineations were more
important than mere elemental signs. Elemental signs are basic. They are
general or generic in their nature therefore only contirbuted to a basic
generalization such as the Sun sign. You were either a Fire, Earth, Air or
Water sign...and you had generic qualities associated with that
element...too
general were most attitudes. " Need to get to the planet' positions and
aspects so we can see the person in depth"... Don't get me wrong, I am as
guilty as the next since I have studied the subject. But, one of the first
things I explain to those I read for is their Elemental Sign. This may be
tempered by other factors but it is still a basic quality that can not be
just mentioned and set aside. Once you know your elemental sign you will
know
your basic nature. Tempering of the person's nature begins at this point.
The
Sun, Moon, Rising Sign, Planet's Positions, Aspects, Transits, etc., temper
this very basic nature.
An elemental sign is determined from a person's Astrological natal chart.
It
is the elemental quality of the sign the Sun resides in at the moment of
birth. If you are an Aries by birth then your elemental sign is Fire. If
you
are a Cancer then your elemental sign is Water.
FIRE EARTH AIR WATER
Cardinal Aries Capricorn Libra Cancer
Fixed Leo Taurus Aquarius Scorpio
Mutable Saggittarius Virgo Gemini Pisces
Some of the qualities associated with the elemental signs are listed below.
FIRE EARTH AIR WATER
Righteousness Propriety Knowledge Benevolence
Warriors Merchants Priests Servants
Spiritual Physical Mental Emotional
Goal Oriented Sensory Self Apraisal Other People
Deceit Fraud Trickery Falsehood
Leader Provider Seer Server
Ego Senses Intellect Mind
Fortitude Prudence Justice Temperance
The key to understanding the above qualities is to look at the specific
differences between each elemental sign. The keywords are listed according
to
philosophical definitions. The first line, going across the page, lists
each
elemental sign's keyword for the Four Virtues.
Righteousness Propriety Knowledge Benevolence
The Fire signs exhibit righteousness. These people conform to the standard
of
moral law. They do what is right and are known for their sense of fair
play.
They are truthful, straight-forward, just, upright and virtuous in their
dealings with other men.
The Earth signs show propriety. They are conventional, proper and fitting.
They follow what is socially acceptable in conduct, behavior and speech.
They
have excellent manners and are very polite. They are prudent and have a
deep
regard for conventional rules of behavior.
The Air signs possess the virtue of knowledge. This does not mean they are
more intelligent than anyone else but are generally well rounded and
informed. They are good communicators. Most have a good grasp of the
language
and generally know a little something about everything. They have good
personalities and are easy to get to know.
The Water signs exhibit benevolence. These type people are charitable,
have a
kindly disposition and promote goodwill. They are concerned with the
welfare
of others. Where other people are concerned they are kind, generous and
philanthropic. They seldom harbor hostility. They derive pleasure from
doing
good deeds.
The next set of keywords shows the four cores (Individualities) of man.
Warriors Merchants Seers Servers
The Fire signs are the true warriors. They demonstrate courage, fortitude,
zeal and pugnacity. They have the mental and moral strength that enables
them
to venture into unknown waters and to persevere and withstand danger. They
seldom show fear and are confident in their actions. They have mettle,
resolution, and tenacity. They can face danger or difficulty without
flinching or retreating. They will fight for their principles and have a
stubborn persistence that is unwilling to recognize defeat. They have grit,
back bone, guts, and are willing to keep fighting under all odds. They are
aggressive and thrive on challenge.
The Earth signs by nature are merchants. They are the storekeepers,
barterers
and traders. They are at their best when buying or selling material or
tangible commodities. Most are very business oriented.
The Air signs are what the philosophers called seers or priests. These are
mentally inclined people. They actively acquire knowledge through
experience,
education and association. In ancient times, the only educated people were
either priests, royalty or those who took it upon themselves to acquire
knowledge (seers). The Air signs are curious, have initiative, are
original,
generally are well-disciplined and are quick thinkers.
The philosophers called the Water signs servers. People under this sign are
cooperative, companionable, hospitable and socialable. They are true
humanitarians and are concerned with the welfare of other people. They are
called servants or servers because of their unselfishness and sincere
devotion to the welfare of humanity. They unconditionally come to the aid
of
the sick and the unfortunate just as they would for one of their own
family,
and most often ask nothing in return.
The next set of keywords shows the natures of man.
Spiritual Physical Mental Emotional
The Fire signs are of a spiritual nature. They have a nature that gives
them
physical energy, strength and vital powers. Their essential characteristic
qualities are liveliness, energy, ardor, enthusiasm, courage and action.
They
have a firm, courageous and assertive disposition which is their most
characteristic qualitiy.
The Earth signs have a physical nature. They have a characteristic love for
the material, tangible things. They derive pleasure from sensory
stimulation
such as taste, smell and feel. They surround themselves with tangible items
such as fine furniture, art, jewelry and most have a nice home that is
expertly decorated. They have good taste in clothing and most are
connoisseurs of food and drink.
The Air signs have a mental nature and are keen witted. They rationalize by
thinking things out rather than being influenced by emotional or physical
factors. They enjoy any type of entertainment where they can use their
intellectual capacity and their ability to think quickly and accurately
often
gives them the upper hand.
The Water signs have an emotional nature. They have strong feelings and
sensibilities. They tend to make decisions based on their emotions rather
than by reason. Although they are emotional in nature, they do not
outwardly
express it. Their feelings are hurt easily but they tend to not let it
show.
Each person has a different emotional direction. The emotional nature of a
person is determined in part by the Moon's location in the natal chart, but
just as important the emotional nature of a person can readily be seen by
the
elemental sign.
There are four basic types of emotions.
Goal Orientied Sensory Stimulation Self Appraisal Other People
The emotional nature of the Fire sign is goal oriented. These people like
to
win or be the best in anything they pursue. Their aggressive nature makes
them just one big ego. There is nothing more stimulating to them than to
win,
and there is nothing more depressing to their ego than to lose. They strive
to be the center of attention and are at home when showing-off.
The Earth signs' emotions are aroused by sensory stimulation. Each of the
five senses can produce an emotional response. Sight, sound, touch, smell
and
taste brings joy or depression. Nice surroundings, good music, the feel of
quality materials, the smell and taste of good foods and financial security
are the conditions required for an emotionally happy Earth sign.
The emotional nature of the Air signs is directed toward self appraisal.
These people have a tendency to judge themselves very harshly. They have
certain standards they set for themselves such as hygiene, the way they
dress, education, job performance and family. The Air signs are almost as
ego-oriented as the Fire signs.
The Water signs' emotions are directed toward other people. They are deeply
concerned about the welfare of their friends and family. They also care
about
what other people think and say about them. An insensitive remark from
someone can hurt their feelings deeply, although they may not show it. They
give of themselves and their material possessions freely to help a
less-advantaged person gain confidence and stature. They will go all out
where close friends or family is concerned. It is not easy to make friends
with a water sign because they are skeptical and naturally shy. They will
be
generous and kind to a certain point, but when you gain their confidence
you
will have an all-weather friend who will stand by you through your
struggles.
The next set of keywords shows the four evils of man. Man's treatment of
other men is not without its faults. Each individual, when angered or
mistreated in some fashion, exhibits one of these four evils more
predominantly than the other three.
Deceit Fraud Trickery Falsehood
Deceit is one of the faults of the Fire signs. They are determined,
spiteful
and revengeful. When angered, they will go to almost any extreme necessary
to
get revenge, and that revenge will more often be at the moment of the
anger.
When they're mad they want everyone around them to be mad. They are
spiteful
and will deliberately and openly do things which irritate someone to the
point of anger. They are very short-tempered and anger easily. They are
straight-forward and have no reservations about hurting the feelings of
others, and they are prone to inflict physical pain as well as mental pain.
Just as the main virtue of this sign is being just and right, its main
fault
is deceit.
The Earth signs are normally not prone to physical violence, but as in any
situation, there are exceptions. They are mildly revengeful. Their attitude
is 'my time will come and they do hold a grudge. They will eventually get
their revenge one way or another more often by hitting a person in his
pocketbook. When angered, Earth signs, similar to the Fire and Air signs,
are
quick to express that anger verbally though most likely not physically
unless
as a last resort.
Air signs resort to trickery. These people are crafty, under handed and
ingenious when it comes to evil. They are also prone to physical violence.
Whereas the Fire signs' anger is generally of the moment and soon after
forgotten, the Air signs at their worst are mean. They carry a grudge, and
like Fire signs, they are quick to express their opinion and are very
opinionated. Aquarius and Libra are not as violent as Gemini. Gemini and
mind
altering drugs such as alcohol just do not mix. The Air signs will not
hesitate one moment to express their anger verbally, but physical violence
is
not a first choice during that anger (the exception being Gemini who will
act
in an instant).
The Water sign's fault is being untruthful. They will suppress the truth by
words, writing and conduct to do damage to another. This is not spite. This
is their non-violent way of getting their revenge. Milder cases include
stretching the truth a little, not exactly untrue but not the real truth.
Water signs are emotional people and tend to get carried away in the heat
of
a situation. These people are not prone to physical violence normally, but
being of an emotional nature and having the tendency to let things build up
inside them, they can become extremely abusive. The exception is the sign
Scorpio. Scorpios are self-confident, intelligent, and
strong-willed....they
will tell it like it is - whether you like it or not makes no difference to
them. They will resort to caustic verbal and often times physical violence
in
an instant. Scorpio, by ancient definition, was previously ruled by Mars as
is Aries, and that Mars quality in present in both, both are prone to
physical violence when angered.
As you can see, just from the knowledge of the elemental sign of an
individual you can get a good idea of his virtues, evils, nature, and
emotions. Once you know the qualities of the elemental sign of a person,
you
can then fine tune these qualities by other means.
Animal Totems Provide Wisdom Throughout Life
by: Scarlet Begonia
"In the beginning of all things, wisdom and knowledge were with the
animals,
for Tirawa, the One Above, did not speak directly to man. He sent certain
animals to tell men that he showed himself through the beasts, and that
from
them, and from the stars and the sun and the moon should man learn... all
things tell of Tirawa." - Eagle Chief, Pawnee late 19th century
Animal totems are the belief among people of animal relations and ancestors
who talk to us in order to aid in our lives and teach valuable lessons, if
we
will listen and understand their messages. These totems may be members of
the
animal, bird or reptile kingdoms. Each has a powerful spirit, either it's
own, or that of a being wishing to communicate with the Earth world. The
creatures all have special talents to study and discover, through which one
may develop their kind of magick, medicine and power. The animals must
choose
you, with lifelong power animals usually being from the wild, rather than
domesticated varieties. The animals in our homes link us to their wild
cousins, which we may rarely come in contact with, especially in their
natural world, instead of an artificial zoo environment.
It is believed everyone is born with two primary guides, one creature to
walk
along on the left side to protect and lend guidance to the feminine side of
our energies, while the other stays on the right with the male nature. Some
individuals are born with their male and female side switched to the
opposite
sides, and they have an uncommon energy to employ in their spirit work in
this world. It is debated whether all these beings are born to us and
remain
permanent in our lives, or whether their influences might last anywhere
from
2 days to many years. Working with your totem animal helps you to tune into
your friends' wavelengths and understand one another. Through these beings,
people must learn to trust each other and share their totems. When they do,
they become relatives in the same group or clan, represented and drawn
together by this special animal spirit.
To develop a relationship with your totems, have patience and speak to them
with respect. Increasing the honor you give to your totems will increase
their positive influence in your life. To this end, you should draw and
hang
pictures of your animals. Study them through reading, utilizing books and
the
internet. Watch wildlife videos and listen to their sounds on tapes or
cd's.
Answer the questions: what size, color, shape, behavior patterns and home
does it have? Find out where it originally came from and which direction
that
is from where you live. Learn the the sounds it makes and try to mimic
them.
Ask what it prefers to eat, and what it preys upon, and whether it is the
food of other animals. Discover their mating places, methods of survival
and
adaptation, and general history. Purchase or make figures of both your
totems
and those of your friends to share with them. Imitate the movements of the
animals, perform these actions in dance. Interpret dreams of your animals,
remember details such as the conditions, actions, locations, appearance and
mood of the spirits. Write down the specifics in a dream diary. To save and
protect them, give of both your time and money to wildlife organizations.
Leave presents for your animals, such as their favorite food or something
pretty like a colorful stone or feather, to honor them.
The following are but a small sample of animal spirit totems and some of
their unique qualities and abilities:
Bears: Awakening the unconscious, primal power, dreaming and gentle
strength.
"When a pine needle falls in the forest, the eagle sees it, the deer hears
it, and the bear smells it." (an old First Nation saying)
"Bears keep me humble. They help me to keep the world in perspective and to
understand where I fit on the spectrum of life. We need to preserve the
wilderness and its monarchs for ourselves and for the dreams of children.
We
should fight for these things as if our life depended upon it, because it
does." (Wayne Lynch from Bears: Monarchs of the Northern Wilderness)
The bear hibernates and "dreams the Great Spirit" or engages in
retrospection. There are many stories telling of bears as gods, bears
turned
magickly into men and vice versa. The Great Bear in the sky is also known
as
Ursus Major. Among its stars are the seven called the Big Dipper. Diana,
the
Greek moon goddess, is joined with a bear companion. Bears may stand and
walk
on two legs in a manner similar to humans. They eat just about anything and
store the fat for the winter's repose. Though they are large and considered
lumbering, bears can travel at up to 40 miles per hour in short sprints.
All
bears, including polar bears, love to climb trees, provided the tree is
large
enough to support their weight. One of their favorite foods, honey, is
found
in trees.
Cats: Mysterious, magick, unpredictable, independence. Cheetah: Speed.
Jaguar: Gatekeeper to the unknowable Lion: Cunning, wise leadership. Tiger:
Passion, power, devotion, sensuality.
Egyptians were the first to share their homes with cats. They held all cats
in great esteem as symbols of power and a defense against enemies. They
believed cat's eyes mirrored the sun and this was the reason they could see
in the dark. The custom of Egyptian women lining their eyes with black
originated as imitation of the cat's beautiful eyes. Lavish funerals held
for
favorite cats included tiny coffins and even mummified mice for snacking on
in the afterlife. Many cultures include deities who either are represented
by, or associate with cats. Bast, the Egyptian goddess of fertility and
love
appeared in feline form. In Scandinavia, the fertility goddess Freyja was
linked with felines. In the Hindu religion the goddess of childbirth,
Shasthi, rode upon a cat.
Cats have a controversial past, with black cats being considered both good
and bad luck. If a black cat crossed your path and nothing bad happened, it
was then considered a positive omen. Cats' eyes contain more rods in their
retinas than humans, enabling them to see in the dark. Because this
attribute
was explained as a magickal power originating from the devil, many domestic
cats were burned as "accomplices" of witches. Their long history of magick
and reputation of having nine lives stems also from this skill. The
favorite
prey of domestic cats includes rodents, birds and rabbits. Though they have
many natural enemies, the dog is most often sited.
Tigers' strength and fierceness have long frightened people. Most are
solitary with the exception of mating. Eastern cultures contain many
legends
involving tigers. In the Chinese zodiac, those born in the year of the
tiger
are thought to be colorful, adventurous and strong.
The lion symbolizes feminine power, along with the sun and gold. Female
lions
are better at hunting than male lions. They also are more successful when
they hunt in a band. Unlike other cats they prefer to live together in
groups. These companies are called prides.
Dogs: Faithful companions and protectors. Coyote: Trickster. Wolves: Social
and family values.
Domestic dogs are descended from coyotes and wolves. They were befriended
by
humans to give advance warning of danger by virtue of their superior senses
of smell and hearing. A male dog can catch the scent of a female dog in
heat
from anywhere in a ten mile radius. In the heavens, they are represented by
Sirius, the Dog Star. Individual breeds, along with mixed blood dogs each
have their own capabilities and skills. Many varieties were bred to develop
specific characteristics to help people with work. These qualities include
herding animals, pulling sleds and carts, hunting, searching, fetching and
swimming. Dogs are extraordinarily wonderful parents and were used to
represent motherhood in many cultures. Even when abused and neglected, dogs
remain loving and faithful. They embody unconditional love and loyalty.
Coyote stories involve the animals using their higher intelligence to
persuade or trick others to do it's bidding. All is sacred, and nothing is
sacred to the coyote. They force the student to learn the lesson. Laughter
and humor are known healers and great medicine; the coyote teaches us how
to
laugh at ourselves.
Wolves, despite tales to the contrary, usually will do anything to avoid a
fight. They will change positions, give a low growl or quick glance to ward
off attack. People familiar with wolf behavior can communicate well with
voice changes and movements. Wolves are associated with death and rebirth.
They provide guidance in dreams and meditation.
Dolphin: Sensitivity, Sea Angels. Whales: People of the Sea, Creation,
Power
of Song.
Dolphins are symbols of hope, models of what we hope our human society
could
be, if we learn to behave like them. They are mammals who bring us
knowledge
from the waters of life. They instruct us to move with the ebb and flow of
the tides in our lives, instead of making mountains out of mole hills. As
they live in the water but breath air, they bring us a lesson in rhythmic
breathing. This breathing helps reduce stress and weariness by clearing out
negative energy from our bodies. Dolphins emit clicking sounds which bounce
and reverberate off objects, this is called echo-location. Tonal scales
have
a profound impact on dolphin people. Dolphins have large brains and an
empathy for humans. Igor Charkovsky, a male Russian midwife involved in
water
birthing, said, "Dolphins sense when a woman is about to give birth and
gather round. They give both the mother and child a sense of protection and
safety." The beings are especially gentle with children aged 8 days to 8
years old. Dolphins have a universal language which they employ when
helping
researchers teach disabled children and in giving hope to those humans
suffering from ADD, autism, neurological dysfunction and depression. Even
when young, dolphins display great intelligence. Baby dolphins make and
play
with toy bubble rings, which they create by injecting air into water
vortices, and then move around biting or bouncing them off of walls.
Unfortunately, the United States Congress passed the "Dolphin Death Bill"
in
1997, allowing the tuna industry to once again slaughter dolphins while
tuna
fishing. Dolphins follow tuna and lead the fishing boats to them, where the
dolphins are themselves captured in large nets and needlessly killed.
Whales also are facing death from human whalers. Although internationally
banned, Japan and Norway continue whaling under the guise of "medical
research." The wonderful organization "Earthtrust"* is currently working
with
DNA identification to provide evidence of the illegal sale of whale meat
for
human consumption. The Humpback whales sing beautiful mating songs that are
very soothing to listen to. Whales leap out of their own water world into
the
air of another world, so everyone may witness and recognize them and their
creativity. This is how they represent hiding and rebirth. Many legends
involve whales with creation; they are said to be the keepers of ancient
knowledge.
Horse: Astral traveler, freedom, guardian.
"Of all the animals the horse is the best friend of the Indian, for without
it he could not go on long journeys... If an Indian wishes to gain
something,
he promises his horse that if the horse will help him he will paint it with
native dye, that all may see that help has come to him through the aid of
his
horse." (Brave Buffalo, Teton Sioux Medicine Man, late 19th century)
Shamans fly over realms on mythical horses. Like the horse, people with
horse
medicine are able to carry other people's burdens. Chinese astrology
attributes the horse with being adventurous and pleasant company. No other
animal has helped humans as much as the horse. Many people believe horses
are
gifted with clairvoyance and can identify magickal persons. The stallions
are
linked to sexual talent and appetite. Horses are still used for work,
whether
it be plowing, pulling, carrying or riding.
Totem animal spirits will help you through life, if you listen and learn
from
the messages and lessons they give to you. They will keep humans from
repeating the same mistakes which prevent them from advancing spiritually
in
this world.

The Witches' Rede of Chivalry
Insofar as the Craft of the Wise is the most ancient and most honorable
creed
of humankind, it behooves all who are Witches to act in ways that give
respect to the Old Gods, to their sisters and brothers of the Craft, and to
themselves. Therefore, be it noted that:
Chivalry is a high code of honor which is of most ancient Pagan origin, and
must be lived by all who follow the Old Ways.
It must be kenned that thoughts and intent put forth on this middle-Earth
will wax strong in otherworlds beyond, and return...bringing into creation,
on this world, that which had been sent forth. Thus one should exercise
discipline, for "as ye do plant, so shall ye harvest."
It is only by preparing our minds to be as Gods that we can ultimately
attain
godhead.
"This above all...to thine own self be true..."
A Witch's word must have the validity of a signed and witness oath. Thus,
give thy word sparingly, but adhere to it like iron.
Refrain from speaking ill of others, for not all truths of the matter may
be
known.
Pass not unverified words about another, for hearsay is, in a large part, a
thing of falsehoods.
Be thou honest with others, and have them known that honesty is likewise
expected of them.
The fury of the moment plays folly with the truth; to keep one's head is a
virtue.
Contemplate always the consequences of thine acts upon others. Strive not
to
harm.
Diverse covens may well have diverse news on love between members and with
others. When a coven, clan or grove is visited or joined, one should
discern
quietly their practices, and abide thereby.
Dignity, a gracious manner, and a good humor are much to be admired.
As a Witch, thou hast power, and thy powers wax strongly as wisdom
increases.
Therefore exercise discretion in the use thereof.
Courage and honor endure forever. Their echoes remain when the mountains
have
crumbled to dust.
Pledge friendship and fealty to those who so warrant. Strengthen others of
the Brethren and they shall strengthen thee.
Thou shall not reveal secrets of another Witch or another coven. Others
have
labored long and hard for them and cherish them as treasures.
Though there may be differences between those of the Old Ways, those who
are
once-born must see nothing, and must hear nothing.
Those who follow the mysteries should be above reproach in the eyes of the
world.
The laws of the land should be obeyed whenever possible and within reason,
for in the main they have been chosen with wisdom.
Have pride in thyself, and seek perfection in body and in mind. For the
Lady
has said, "How can thou honor another unless thou give honor to thyself
first?"
Those who seek the mysteries should consider themselves as select of the
Gods, for it is they who lead the race of humans to the highest of thrones
and beyond the very stars.
