PART 5

Taking a deed breath, Bill looked around him, gauging those around him. Seeing who of those would be able to handle to work that he knew needed to be done. “Can everybody understand me? Can everybody hear me?” Bill said aloud in a ringing voice. “Yes, we wounded the beast. However, as I bet it has been for awhile, it Will be back.” Bill didn’t know how he knew this had happened before, but didn’t care. He paused to make sure that he had their complete attention and that understood the gravity of the situation. Again in a loud voice,“This time we will be ready, and this time we will slay this nightmare.”

The crowd, tired, hurt, and scared, cheered and hollered. “We have many things to do, and a short time to do it in. Who here is the best at making those spears?” For a moment, everyone was quiet. Bill wasn’t sure there would be an answer. Then finally a small voice spoke. “I sir, I can make spears”. Bill turned around, and saw a boy, tanned and sun beaten, but strong. He couldn’t have been a few moons past his fourteenth birthday, standing out in front of the group. Nodding his head Bill spoke to the young warrior. “We need as many as these as you can make, and as fast as you can make them.” Without a word the boy turned and went to work.

“We also need to fortify the wall; this will be the hardest, as it must encompass the whole village. Who of those here is best at cutting down trees the fastest?” Out of the group came 12 men, some young, but most have seen quite a few winters. What other choice does he have? “Ok, stay together! Do not branch out to far from each other. Go outside the Gate and start cutting down as many trees as you can.” Pointing out a few kids to small for much of anything, “You I want to climb atop the houses nearest the Gate and keep a keen eye out for anything in the forest that big enough to pose a threat.” Happy to be included, they dashed off with the men toward the villages Main Gate. Maybe, this might just work. Selecting a few men, Bill said “gather up as many of the spears and weapons we have left, and bring them here.” And away they went, hurrying in case the Beast comes back sooner then ready for. To the rest of the crowd, “Do what you can to clean up the debris from the place the Beast came through. Set up a watcher to scan the near Forrest for movement. You sense danger, you sound that alarm.” Then Bill went back to check on the girls.

He found the girls, sitting quietly at the kitchen table. Without a word, he just sat down. After a few minutes he spoke up, “how long has the attacks on the village been happening? Is it the same creature, or are there others?” The question hung in the air for a few moments. Until finally the little one spoke up. Sheryl said, “the Monsters come when the Moons are almost their fullest, but never a set day, they’ve tried to count the days, but its only close.” Then Alyria spoke up, “Until tonight, the monster, whichever one came (same breed though)would come in, take someone, then flee, never to see or hear from that person again. You are the First to actually chase one of them away, though it helped we’re getting better at getting the men to the beast and trying to stop it. One of the villagers came and told us what happened” Responding to the questioning look Bill gave her.

Shrugging, Bill said “By the way, earlier tonight when I came here with Sheryl, she called you Aunt K… I’m curious, what’s the K for?” Looking out into the garden she replied, “Kenndall, Alyria Rose Kenndall. Aunt K to my little one here. Though I’m not really her Aunt, I’m just the only one she would let take care of her when she arrived here, about a year ago.” Bill didn’t want to think about the circumstances that brought her here, what horror happened to the child to bring her here?

Part 4

Bill was scoping out his little room when the first blast of a great horn went off. It sounded like an air raid horn, one continuous blast after another. He could feel it vibrating the air with such violent force. Scrambling back into the main room bill saw the girls huddled together in a corner. Without stopping to think bill ran outside, he could not hear their screams for him to stop. To the west side of town there was a disturbance in the trees. Something massive was smashing its way through the thick foliage, Bill ran to the small group of men gathered near the area, the look of fright and determination fought and raged on their faces. Bill came up to the nearest man, a short and sticklike sort of man, and shouted over the commotion “What is it?”. The man just looked at bill and shook his head, he didn’t know.

A few of the men held spears, the heads made out of old, jagged and rusted metal. Others had clubs made out of large pieces of wood, with shaved and wrapped ends to hold on to. All in all, it was not much against something very big. The air horn paused for a just a moment; everything seemed to take on a dream like quality. It seemed years in between heart beats.

The next moment it finally crashed through the wall of trees that stood as the line of the village. And Time seems to have been put on fast forward. At first bill couldn’t even make out what it was, just a mass of rushing blackness, with claws and fangs hung in a gigantic maw that bellowed fiercely. It tossed the front few spearmen aside like rag dolls. Somehow, the others gained some sense of awareness and surrounded the creature. Jabbing and ducking at the same time as the Beast roared and tried to swipe at them. The few men with clubs quickly fell back, knowing they were useless against this foe. Without thinking twice, bill ran and picked up a spear from one of the unconscious, yet alive, men that had been tossed aside. In stead of joining the ring of men, he slowly circled the area, looking for a good vantage point.

With calm nerves and a sense of purpose he hefted up his spear, set in his stance he drew back and waited. The beast turned his way and roared. Bill sent his spear flying. Time shifted once again. It seemed like forever that the spear flew on its course. To bill’s eyes everything was in slow motion. There was no sound. Then it struck home into and partially through the left shoulder of the creature. A walking towering mass of mussel and scales, almost reptilian, with a tail Bill just noticed it had. With a scream of fury and pain, the beast turned and fled back into the Forrest from which it came.

With that Time finally seemed to settle back down. Bill collapsed and sat down on the hard earth. Shock settled in as the adrenaline dumped out of his system. He had no clue how he did what he just did. It took bill a moment to realize that the crowd was now gathered around him. Nor that they were pulling him up and hugging him profusely, laughing and clapping. And for the first time in his life, he knew what he was supposed to do.

Part III

It took only about a half an hour to reach the Village. There was a rickety make shift gate, between an old archway, which stood open. Hanging from the top of the archway was a sign; the faded lettering was almost unreadable. The sign said Woodhaven. There really didn’t seem to be any order to the Village. Scant huts just littered about. Some had little gardens with various vegetables growing. Others had small animals gated behind fences that were so pitiful; it was amazing that the animals stayed.

Not knowing where to go, Bill just walked around taking in as much as he could. Unlike the Forrest surrounding the Village, the plant life was very different, not so oddly colorful. Not seeming as if it could come alive and move on its own. Bill ended up in the center of the small little Village, to where a old fashioned well sat. It was a stone ring, only about four feet around and three feet tall. A makeshift pulley system with a bucket waiting patiently for the next user, so bill sent the bucket down and brought up some of the coldest, best tasting water, he ever drank.

Bill sensed a stirring in the air, and turned around, and there standing behind him was Woodhaven’s smallest resident. The first thing he noticed, (besides being a munchkin) was that she had the brightest purple eyes that almost seemed to shine. “Um hi, my name is Bill, and what’s your name?” The little girl just stood there, staring at him with those eyes. Not sure what else to do, Bill looked around hoping to see the girls parents or something. “Are your mommy and daddy close by? Where around here do you live?

The little girl walked up, grabbed his hand, and led him down a path leading toward the north east of the Village. Her house was in a cluster of seven huts. And not surprisingly there was a garden in front of the hut, and all the flowers were purple. A voice issued from inside and out of the front door, a voice a sweet as spring rain, a soft melody, almost floating on the air. “Sheryl, good timing, Lunch is ready.” Finally the little girl spoke up. “Aunt K, I brought a Friend!” A shiver ran up his spine as Bills skin broke out in goose bumps.

The lady of the house was standing at a modest little counter. The First thing Bill noticed was how long her hair fell, all the way down her back. Like a Raven, black with a hint of blue. The next was that her eye’s were blue, glacial blue. She stood tall, proud, and moved with a grace that only a dancer could have. She looked at bill for a moment, and motioned to the table. Humming a light melody, she set about setting out lunch for the now three of them. Fresh cut wild berries tossed with sliced apples and petals from some pleasant smelling purple flower he couldn’t name, but tasted wonderful. This was served with a tea made from select flowers and herbs from the garden.

“So what’s your name stranger?” The lady with the Raven hair said. “William, but everyone calls me Bill, well where I came from anyway.” Bill said after swallowing some tea. “Well Bill, I’m Alyria, and you’ve already met Sheryl. I hope you like our little town, because there really isn’t anything else around these parts for civil people.”

“I met someone on the way here, claims to be the creator of this world. Jaiden she said her name was. She came out of the Forest while I was resting, seemed so unreal, wearing the wildest robes. Said she’s the one that brought me here. Maybe I was dreaming.” Bill said, fiddling with his fork nervously. “It wasn’t a dream, she’s real, but only a few have seen her. You must be someone very special indeed. It is no wonder Sheryl approached you, she has a sense for things. We have a extra room, you can stay here for a while.” Alyria said, as she cleaned up after lunch.

Part 2

The Forest seemed to loom over the small road, but couldn’t quiet seem to retake the land. Someone or something must keep this road then. As he walked along, he could hear creatures scurrying deep in the shadows of the trees. He could only imagine what type of animals resided in this place. For a moment he almost wondered how many are deadly… But then again, who says you can’t die here too. Bill decided to be extra careful just in case.

The day wore on, and so did the road, with nothing seeming in sight. After a while, Bill decided to take a rest on a fallen log that was by the road. It didn’t seem rotted or covered with bugs. Bill thought he could still smell the Ocean from here, salty and sweet. Oh it would be nice to go fishing sitting on the beach, Bill thought to himself. And hoped that he could tell what was poisonous… Screw it, you only live once. But wait, then again maybe not.

Breathing in deeply the scents around him, he closed his eyes and slowly drifted off. Memory becomes dreams. He was back in Beth’s place; she was sitting at the computer, checking her email or something. Bill walked up behind her and softly wrapped his arms around her waist, leaving her arms free. Nestling his face against her neck, he tells her he loves her and nibbles her ear. Bill feels so happy right now, feeling like things are finally starting to go right for him.

Something stirs near where bill is sleeping, he doesn’t want to wake, but Bill wants to stay there dreaming forever. To late, his eyes open. And there, standing in from of him, was a tall woman, seeming to glow from the inside, her robes were done in the colors of the Forrest. Roses the color of Fire were strewn through her long dark hair.

“My dear Bill, how far you have come to me.” The strange lady said as Bill just sat and stared. “How do you know my name? Who are you?” was all that Bill managed to say. “I know that you are confused, but there is a reason that I brought you here. There is something I need done, but only you have the ability to do it. You will know what to do when the time comes. For now, there is a town just up the road, there is a place already waiting for you there.” She started to fade back into the Forrest when Bill Shouted “Wait, What is your name?” “Jaiden, I made this world, and you’re here to save it.”

The Otherside PT1

William wyndall was someone life seemed to have a beef with. No matter what situation he was in, whatever could go wrong, pretty much did. A failed marriage, a long list of angry past ex-girlfriends, and an Orphan to boot was only a small list of the things that went wrong in his life. Bill just couldn’t get women to not end up hating his guts. He thought his current relationship was going ok…

In steps fate once more to laugh at the pathetic fool.

It was a nice spring day, Bill was waiting at his girl friends house for her to come home, as he was staying there for a few days. Of course to him everything seemed to be going just great, a neon flashing billboard probably couldn’t give him a clue. It was a big place, so his girlfriend Bethany was sharing it with some roommates. It was getting late and she wasn’t home yet, which was unusual. Well the roommates got home first, and sat down across from bill, and said “we have to talk.” Which in the history of mankind, those four words have never been followed by good news.

“Will, do you know why Beth has been getting home late the past few days?” the one roommate asked.

“She works really hard, and I guess she’ll b home when she gets home.” William said.

“No Will, it’s you. She doesn’t want to be home because of you. She just can’t seem to tell you. This is her place, her place to fell safe and at home. She can’t do that with you here. Just thought you should know.” The roommate finished and left with the other one, leaving Bill to sit there and try and to digest the Nuclear Bomb that was just dropped on his poor dumb head. With a Sigh, he got up, and began to gather up the few little belongings he had there, took one last look around, and feeling like a Butcher Knife was lodged in his chest, left. Didn’t bother leaving a note, what would be the point.

Down the drive-way and down the block he went. The Sun was shining bright, the breeze wafted scents of flowers and cut grass, the smell of BBQ’s going on… None of this registered to Bill. An Atomic Bomb could go off and he’d just keep walking, even as he disintegrated. What do you do when all you want to do is go home, and then realize there is no such place? So he kept putting one foot in front of another, not really paying attention to where he was going. He made it to the small road leading out of the little town. A one lane county road, no street lights, or even a curb. And Darkness fell upon him, covering him like a shroud.

Nathan Sanders, aka Nate Dawg to his loser friends, is the perfect picture of “wanna-be white gangsta.” Driving suspended of course for prior DUI’s in his phat Chevy Caprice classic, should never have been on the road in the first place. But a DUI wasn’t going to stop Bad Ass Nate Dawg from getting to his “bro’s” house in the next town. Fate was speeding to meet dear Bill one last time.

Walking along, bill never thought twice about the car approaching behind him, he was traveling on the grass when the out of control drunk driver struck him from behind and together, car and body, smashed through a tree. That’s right, Through a tree.

Bill awoke slowly, feeling groggy, but otherwise ok. So he sat up slowly, no pain, nothing. “Ok, I’m ok” he thought. Then he opened his eyes, and was stunned. He sat on the grass, looking at a beach with Pink Sand. Vibrant blue water splashed wave upon wave onto the beautiful beach. The Sun that was setting was Not Sol. No way, no how. It seemed Bigger, and more… He couldn’t put a word to it. He looked behind him, and there rising behind him, were three moons that formed a triangle in the darkening sky. “Where am I?” Bill asked aloud, though nothing seemed to hear him.

Bill decided to go for a stroll along the beach, not like he had some place to be anyway. After a while, a Forest began to build as he walked. Trees the likes of which he never laid eyes on were everywhere, many with deep purple leaves. Vines Red as blood draped down from the branches, they didn’t seem to choke the trees like the ones Bill knew of. Things worked differently here, wherever here is.

Bill walked for what seemed like hours, yet he never tired, never got hungry or thirsty, or had to even pee. Of course bill never even stopped to consider the implications of that. The Sun of this world set, and darkness had set in, but not so much, the tree moons kept everything pretty bright. Even the Stars and Constellations were Alien to him. Eventually he came upon a road, made by… Hell, who knows what. There was an old faded sign, with pictures of crudely drawn houses and an arrow pointing down the path. Why not he asked himself, and started down the path.
