I’ve dreamt of her before she married that old fart Joseph. When she was a loving girl; so sweet, so innocent. Hmm! I remember when she first saw me and I of her. I was just hired for that land to work as a farmer, a slave. I was cutting wood down by the creek, she had been running along the grass with her feet bare, and the brightest smile on her face. A boy of her age was with her. Eleven, she was so young then, but beautiful; just beautiful. Ah! I remember when our eyes locked. I had stopped chopping wood because I heard laughter coming from her, a sweet but loud laugh like yours when something is absolutely funny. I had watched her run down the hill laughing and her dress blowing. Ribbons in her curly hair wild and loose.
I stood there leaning against the axe watching as she slowed looking behind her seeing if that boy was still following her. Breathing fast but sweet. She didn’t think anyone was around but when she stopped, looking for the boy, she turned her head and those big brown eyes locked on mine. She stopped her mouth wanting to open and scream, but she didn’t. She didn’t and just stared, stared into my blue eyes wondering how come I was in her area. Her home. She just stood there her hair blowing in the wind, her eyes blinking only once or twice, as I couldn’t move my gaze from hers. She spoke first coming closer unafraid and shy still.
She came closer twirling her finger on one side of her dress, staring up at me her eyes roaming over me she said “And who might you be Sir?”
I replied “Gabriel, My lady.”
She giggled then because I had bowed my head to her. She was so sweet she then said “Gabriel are you a wanderer or a new slave. Perhaps you are a Viking. Do you have a sword, if so let me see it?”
I had laughed at her and shook my head marveling in her innocents. “My lady I am your fathers new slave. I am here for you bidding and your father’s. I am no warrior.”
She had pouted her lips , then taking a step forward she glanced behind her before replying. “Gabriel may I tell you something.”
I had stared down at her looking around as she had, then whispering back, “anything my Lady.” “It’s a secret you must not tell anyone, not even my father if he asks of you but I am sure he will not. Promise to keep it Gabriel.”
I smiled unable to help myself. “Of course my lady.” She then said. “You are handsome.”
Turning and running off into the trees leaving me to stare after her, watching her dress flow behind her. I had heard rustling from the bushes on the hill and say the boy coming down the hill yet he suddenly stopped upon seeing me and going back the way he came. Think he was afraid of me. I don’t remember ever seeing him again.
When I was hired for the man I didn’t know he ha a daughter and she was so beautiful. I think I feel in love with her that day. She had a free spirit.
