This is one of my best friends. Her story should touch everyone. That is why I am putting it here. I want everyone who reads it to learn the lessons of life she learned the hard way, without having to live it.
My name is Rhonda and I am HIV Positive. I found out 9 years ago by a freak accident. I went to get a life insurance policy and they had to do a mouth swab and then wait for results. Well about 3 weeks later I get letter in the mail telling me to contact a number for Joplin Health Department so I called and voice mail. We played phoine tag foe a few days and then they left me a message on a Friday the would come to my house on Monday so all I could do was sit and wait and wounder what it was they wanted to talk to me about. I talk to my husbad at the time and my mom and we dicided it could be one of 3 things. hiv,cancer, or hepititis. I kind all ready knew it was HIV. Why well there was a guy I thought I loved and he is 14 years older then me and he has played all the games and done things this small girl would have never dreamed about. So these people showed up and wanted to talk to just me and told them that what they had to say to me they say in front of my husband because he would know anyway. They tried to get me talk to them alone and I said NO because I have a good idea of what you want to tell me and I told them about my 3 things I thought it may be and they asked me which one I thought it was and I said HIV. They asked why that one and I told them about my exboyfriend and then they said you're right. So I all I could think about was my Family and Friends and what to do next. I asked what do I need to do, who do I need to tell and where to go for help. They gave me a number of a place in Sprinfield,MO call APO (Aids Projects of the Ozarks) and also called for me and set it all up all I had to do was show up. So after the news I went to tell my Mom and she took it well then I called my older Sister and Brother and asked them to come to my moms house because I had to tell them something and they said "What you need to tell me just tell me because I do not have time to come to town to talk". So I told them over the phone Boy what a shock and then they wished they came to town. My Dad, and younger sister and brother I told in person. They lived out of town and it was best. They all took it hard and they have been my support group too. So I went to APO and met with them and I did not have to do this alone. My husband,Mom,little brother and his wife went with me. We learned alot it 5 hours. Met my Dr., had my blood taken to see where my CD4 and Viral load was and if I needed to be on Meds. And then wait for 2 weeks and go back for results. I did have to start meds and have been on them ever since. Today I am undectable, that means all my levels are good and the meds are working right. I live life to the fullest and do what I want and have learned what I can and can not do. I cna swim in the lake, creek or a pond because of the bacterea and can not have pets that has to use a litter box because of the dust with feces in it it could make me very sick and I do not want to be that sick everyday. I also have to becareful with Horses, they have dust and dander and if I get that in my system it could be bad too. But I watch what I do. If I cut myself and bleed I know what to do on clean up and I am around anyone of my family or friends they know what to do. STAND BACK I WILL DEAL WITH IT. I do have great family and friends they do not treat me differant and I am no differant then I was before this. I make jokes about me having HIV, like when there is a blood drive and someone asks if I am going to give I just tell No I am contaminted Sorry. I get real funny looks, but that is just me. Now I am dietibetic and having a harder time dealing with that then anything. But I just take day by day and go on with life. I do not have kids nor do my lolder sibligs and my younger siblings do so I have kids in my life and all my friends that have kids I am Aunt Rhonda to them and I Love it. I do not worry about any of them getting it from me nor are thier parents. I want to say Thank You for reding My Story and hope that all of You will do more studing on HIV and AIDS.
