I had to do this exercise for a critical thinking class. The professor gave us a list of 15 items (in alphabetical order) that would need to be established for a new society/country. Our assignment was to list these items in the order we thought would be essential in establishing a society/country that would thrive. Here's my post...
First off, here's the list I've come up with:
1) Law
2)Order
3)Education
4) Defense
5)Agriculture
6) Healthcare
7) Industry
8) Banking
9) Exploration
10) Technology
11) Trade
12) Mass Transit
13) Art/Entertainment
14) Religion
15) Recreation
A new society would obviously need to establish law by which its citizens should adhere to. By establishing these laws and the population's following them, it would follow that order would be the obvious result. (At least, this would be the intended outcome.) Education is very important. If a society is expected to survive, education must be a priority. In fact, I believe that you could not have any of the listed characteristics without some form of education. Even if a society/country is at peace with its neighbors, the need for a defense system/plan is essential to its ultimate survival. Since people need to eat, agriculture places as a high priority; and if these people want to live long, healthy lives and continue to thrive as a whole, establishing a healthcare system is also fundamental. As this society/country continues to grow industry would need to be developed in order for the people to provide for themselves by employment. A system of banking would need to be instituted in order for the people to be able to do business and plan for their futures. Exploration and technology are necessary for a society/country to grow and learn more about their surroundings, as well as provide indispensable items for the continuation of the group. Once the society/country has become knowledgeable of the surrounding people/countries ways and offerings, a trade agreement could be implemented in order to be beneficial to all those concerned. As the population of the society/country grows there is a need for a mass transit system in order to allow people to travel within their own country as well as visiting neighboring countries. Art/entertainment, religion, and recreation round out the last of the list. These three items are also important to overall well-being of the new society/country but because of their extracurricular characteristics they end up at the end of a list of priorities.
I found this exercise to be an interesting one. After reading some other students’ lists I found myself alternately nodding my head in agreement and shaking it in disagreement. I ranked education high on the list because without it, we could not have all the rest. The reasoning behind putting law and order first is because without those, establishing any other systems would have been difficult to do. Each system/idea would have its own set of rules/laws but these individual systems would have to follow the established laws governing the society as a whole. I chose my last three items because of their seemingly superfluous nature. I feel they are essential in a society's expression as well as a way for the people to enjoy all that they've worked for. Today I feel as though we spend so much time doing the things that have to be done, that we don't have the time to do the things we want to do.
So today was another one of those "so busy I didn't have time to do what I needed to" days. And of course the day went by so fast, it's just not fair! Tomorrow's Monday and that means work and school, both of which I don't want to do. (That's nothing new though.) OK- done bitching.
Thanksgiving is 4 days away, that means a short work week for me- woohoo!!!
If anyone needs any tips for putting off doing those things that need to be done- look no further! I am beyond a doubt the most proficient procrastinator I know. =)
Right now I should be working on my persuasive essay assignment for my critical thinking and writing class that is due tomorrow (Yes, it's due on a Sunday.), but here I am gleefully playing around on VR.
Of course I first amused myself by reading about the latest gossip in Hollywood. Did you know that Kirsten Dunst and Orlando Bloom are rumored to be together again?!? Sorry for any Kirsten Dunst fans, but if this story is in fact truth- I've lost some respect for Mr. Bloom. I just don't see the attraction, she certainly can't act well. Harsh? No- just expressing an honest opinion.
The problem with the assignment is that the topics we were given to choose from were so boring and not interesting as all. How am I supposed to write persuasively about a topic I have no interest in?
I have been unable to find the time to be on VR for quite some time now. Being a single mom of 3, working fulltime and carrying 16 units in school, while also trying to find time for my boyfriend and having a social life has been aggravating to the extreme!
I have a few more papers to write and a speech to prepare for school, finals to study for and a whole bunch of scholarships to apply for, but the semester is in the downhill slide- woohoo!
And then we have the holidays... =)
