Spirituality: The Forgotten Art
By: DragonHawk
In order to believe in and study Earth Spirituality, one must believe in a "higher power".
This belief in a "higher power" can come in many different forms, as you will see in the
next chapter, but it must exist in the field of Earth Spirituality to make your experience
worthwhile.
In all too many cases, especially in the electronic age of Earth Spirituality, the spiritual
aspects seem to be no more than a side-line note. Many internet websites, and even
some good books, skirt the issue of a "higher power". It would seem as though many of
these people find the subject of a "higher power" too boring and want to jump right into
the exciting topics. Contrary to these actions, though, you virtually cannot ignore the
topic of a "higher power".
Many beginners want to begin spellcasting immediately, rather then understanding why
spells work. This activity is dangerous, ineffective, and unacceptable. Spells and rituals
will very rarely work if you do not respect and understand the power granted you.
Every person has access to this power, but few outside of the true realm of Earth
Spirituality can use it effectively.
Earth Spiritualists (this includes Pagans and Witches) believe in a "higher power". They
are certainly not atheists or skeptics. This is where the ability to effectively spellcast
comes from. The spell is either granted by or is the "higher power". This must be
understood before continuing your work.
Spells and rituals are a very important aspect of Earth Spirituality. Spells and rituals,
which we will study later, are a form of self-help prayer. While you do most of the
work in the spell, and create and channel the desired energies, it is the "higher power"
that allows your spell to succeed, grants requests, or helps in adding the needed "push".
While a spell can be worked without the belief in a higher power, the results of the spell
will be much lower. For example, a spell to heal yourself (without the belief in a "higher
power") may work to some small degree, but a spell to change an outcome or to sffect
another person (without the belief in a "higher power") will usually fail.
Now please understand that there are many different forms of a "higher power"
encompassed in the realm of Earth Spirituality. Unlike such religions as Christianity, not
all Earth Spirituality Practitioners believe in the same "higher power". On top of this, we
do not access just one level of spirituality, but rather, many different levels.
With the acceptance in the belief of a "higher power", one can now proceed to the study
of the Pyramid Structure of Earth Spirituality.
Chapter Recap and Lesson - A core belief of Earth Spirituality is the existence of a
"higher power". As with most all religions, this "higher power" affects all aspects of Earth
Spirituality, especially spells and rituals. The ability to cast an effective spell, to
understand divination, and to understand animal signs, comes from this "higher power".
Please proceed to the "Pyramid" study to learn more about the different "higher powers"
that exist in the realm of Earth Spirituality.
Listen to the words of the God, who is son, brother, lover and consort of the Lady: I am the fleet deer in the forest, I am the beach which receives the waves. I am the sun which warms the earth. I am the Lord of the Spiral Dance of Life, Death and Rebirth, the gentle Reaper, the Winter Stag and the Spring Fawn. All things are of Me for I am of the Goddess, opposite, yet not opposing. I bring forth from the womb that is a tomb, for I am the seed which fertilizes. I am abundant life, for I am the grain that grows and I am death, the harvest in the fall. And I am rebirth after darkness, for I am the seed that springs forth anew. I am fertility, the spreader of life, and I am the Lord of Death which adds value to life. I am the Guardian of the gate between life and death. I am the King of the underworld, where no living being may venture, but I am also the King of rebirth, turning the tomb into a womb. I bring love and strength, peace and passion, hope and joy, for I am the gentle lover in the night. All that comes from the Great Mother, the Divine Star Goddess, who is Mother of us all. |
Listen to the words of the Great Mother, who of old was called Artemis, Astarte, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Diana, Arionrhod, Brigid, and by many other names: "Whenever you have need of anything, once in the month, and better it be when the moon is full, you shall assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of Me who is Queen of all the Wise. You shall be free from slavery, and as a sign that you be free you shall be naked in your rites. Sing, feast, dance, make music and love, all in My presence, for Mine is the ecstasy of the spirit, and Mine also is joy on earth. For My law is love unto all beings. Mine is the secret that opens the door of youth, and Mine is the cup of wine of life that is the Cauldron of Cerridwen that is the holy grail of immortality. I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal and beyond death I give peace and freedom and reunion with those that have gone before. Nor do I demand aught of sacrifice, for behold, I am the mother of all things, and My love is poured upon the earth." Hear the words of the Star Goddess, the dust whose feet are the host of heaven, whose body encircles the universe: "I who am the beauty of the green earth and the white moon among the stars and the mysteries of the waters, I call upon your soul to arise and come unto me. For I am the soul of nature that gives life to the universe. From Me all things proceed and unto Me they must return. Let My worship be in the heart that rejoices, for behold -- all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals. Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you. And you who seek to know Me, know that your seeking and yearning will avail you not, unless you know the Mystery: for if that which you seek, you find not within yourself, you will never find it without. For behold, I have been with you from the beginning, and I am that which is attained at the end of desire." From "The Witches' God" by Janet and Stewart Farrar Written by Doreen Valiente |
Bide the Wiccan Laws we must, In Perfect Love and Perfect Trust. Live and let live, Fairly take and fairly give. Cast the circle thrice about to keep the evil spirits out, To bind the spell every time, Let the spell be spoke in rhyme. Soft of eye and light of touch, Speak little, listen much. Deosil go by the waxing moon, Chanting out the witches' rune. Widdershines go by the waning moon, Chanting out the baneful rune. When the Lady's moon is new, Kiss the hand to her, times two. When the moon rides at her peak, Then your heart's desire seek. Heed the north winds mighty gale, Lock the door and drop the sail. When the wind comes from the south, Love will kiss thee on the mouth. When the wind blows from the west, Departed souls will have no rest. When the wind blows from the east. Expect the new and set the feast. Nine woods in the cauldron go, Burn then fast and burn them slow. Elder be the Lady's tree, Burn it not or cursed you'll be. When the wheel begins to turn, Let the Beltane fires burn. When the wheel has turned to Yule, Light the log and the Horned One rules. Heed ye Flower, Bush and Tree, By the Lady blessed be. Where the rippling waters go, Cast a stone and truth you'll know. When ye have a true need, Hearken not to other's greed. With a fool no season spend, Lest ye be counted as his friend. Merry Meet and Merry part, Bright the cheeks and warm the heart. Mind the three fold law you should, Three times bad and three times good. When misfortune is enow, Wear the blue star on thy brow. True in love ever be, Lest thy lover's false to three. Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill: An ye harm none, do what ye will. |
This is just a simple generic candle spell that you can adapt to most anything you need. If you use it, please use it wisely. Don't use it to interfere with anyone else's life. Find a spot where you will not be disturbed for awhile, and will have reasonable quiet. Use a flat level service, such as an altar. If you don't have an altar, you can use a coffee table or dresser. You can perform this spell during the day, or at night. If you do it at night, you can turn the lights off, but if it makes you uncomfortable, leave them on. You will need a candle, oil for anointing the candle, one or more herbs corresponding to the spell. You will also need your athame, or straight pin if you don't have an athame. You can also use stones if you want. Check herb and color correspondences for the appropriate color, herb and oils. The shape of the candle does not really matter. Taper or Votive candles will work. If you can't find the color you need, use plain white. Carve what you wish to accomplish into the candle with the athame or pin. If you are using a taper, carve the words from top to bottom, for increasing and bottom to top for decreasing. If you are using a votive candle, carve it around the candle clockwise for increasing, counterclockwise for decreasing. Anoint the candle with the oil. A drop is enough. Rub from wick to end for increasing and end to wick for decreasing. Put the candle in the holder. Sprinkle the herbs in a circle around the base of the candle, a pinch is more than enough. If you are using stones, set them in a circle around the candle holder. If you are using just one stone, set it beside the holder in the direction that corresponds to the purpose of your spell. For example, if you were doing a spell to increase your physical energy, you might set the stone in the south. Light the candle. As you light the candle, visualize what you want to accomplish. To do this, think of what you need and hold a picture of it in your mind. You can also use a chant at this point or just say what you want to happen out loud. This is optional, in my opinion, visualization is the most effective. Let the candle burn out completely if possible. DO Not leave it unattended. If you have to leave or go to sleep, put the candle out and relight it as soon as you can. No matter how safe you think your candle holders are, accidents can happen. I have had wax catch fire and cause a glass candleholder to split. If I hadn't been watching it, my altar would have caught fire. ALWAYS monitor your candles, and use fireproof holders. When the candle has burned out, dispose of the wax and herbs. Bury it if possible. Color Correspondences White: All Purpose, but especially good for purification, protection, truth, Maiden Aspect of the Goddess Black: protection, absorbing negative energies, Crone Aspect of the Goddess, reversing and transforming negativitiy, removing obstacles or blocks Red: Protection, energy, defense, element of fire, Mother Aspect of the Goddess, passionate love, motivation, action being taken Pink: calm, love, reconciliation, children, peace Blue: truth, creativity, protection, element of water Green: Money, Prosperity, abundance, element of earth, success, marriage Gold: The God, The sun, healing, prosperity Silver: the goddess, the moon, neutralizing negative energies Purple: protection, divination, psychic abilites, change luck, removing negative energies and spells, spiritual protection Yellow: divination, element of air, healing, intellect Magenta: added to any spell to speed results Indigo: neutralize negative magic or negative energies Types of candles used: You can use most any type of candle with success. As long as the intention and faith it there, the candle doesn’t much matter. I have used birthday candles in a pinch with success. You might find that you like certain types of candles after trying a few. Here are a few to consider: Taper: The most commonly used. You need a taper holder for these. They’re very inexpensive and work well 4-inch straight candles: These are around the size of a cigarette. They’re effective and burn out quickly, though you do need a specific kind of holder for them that may be hard to find. I’ve situated them in a cup of sand or even kitty litter when I couldn’t find an appropriate sized holder. 7-day vigil or 2 day jar candles: these take a bit of time to burn out. They come glass encased and need no holder. You can carve your spell intent into the top of the candle, clockwise for increasing, counterclockwise for decreasing, or you can add a label to the jar with your spell intent. Anoint the top of the candle as stated above. If you use herbs, use a VERY light sprinkling, as they make it more likely the candle will catch fire and the glass will split. I usually stick them in a metal container in case the glass cracks which happens occasionally. They are good when you need an extra energy boost because of their tendency to burn a long time. Votives: can be used same as above, for a shorter burning time. I do not like to re-use holders with votives as residual wax may stick., so tend to use cheap glass holders (check the dollar store) and throw them out when I’m done. The advantage of votives in a glass holder is that you can anoint the full candle with oils and herbs before you put them in the holder. Again, I put them on a metal or stone surface in the interests of fire safety. Figure candles: Figure candles are available in a variety of shapes from various occult shops. The shape relates to the symbolism of the work and may depend on the magical systems. I am not crazy about this type of candle. The image can be useful for symbolic purposes, but check the quality of the wax as they are sometimes made from low quality wax and may crumple and burn out fast. Soy candles: I love soy candles. Most contain no chemicals. I found a particular kind that came encased in a glass cup. They produced little or no soot and burned very clean. I have found it difficult to find a reliable source, but I love them so much I am considering learning to make my own. They’re worth a try if you run across them. Watch how your candles burn for signs as to how successful your spell may be. Your best result is where most of the wax is used and there is little or no blackness or soot. Soot can mean obstacles or adversity., and its wise to do a cleansing or working to remove these obstacles. Candles going out are also a VERY bad sign and may require repeated workings to wear down resistance. None of this applies if the candle was poorly made to being with. Sometimes the quality of the candle overall or the conditions it was burned in (drafts, etc) can affect how it looked at the end. A spell is the utilization of natural energies to fulfill a specific need. Energy from herbs, the elements, and symbols of the elements, stones, deity, or what we identify with as deity, and our own energy are combined and directed towards a specific purpose, or to fill a specific need. It can be a small need or a large one. Some spells are elaborate, require alot of supplies, and time consuming and some are so simple they take as little as a minute. It is not a quick fix or cure all, but more of a way to create opportunity. Spells do not work totally by themselves. You must take action to support them. For example, if you were to do a prosperity spell and then turn down every job offer that comes your way, you would be working against yourself, and essentially, canceling out any magickal action you took. Another misconception people have about spells is that you can get super rich, powerful, whatever. the fact is, if there is not a need for the spell in the first place, it probably won't manifest. Spells should never be used to harm another person, or control then against their will. In my opinion, the effects of any spell done will be revisited on the person that cast the spell times three. This includes controlling other people by using love spells. Or getting something by taking it from someone else. You should think very carefully about the possible effects of any spell before you do it. Look at it carefully from all angles. If an innocent person could potentially be harmed in any manner, then you should rethink your plans. Be creative. If you are not willing to take the time to think things through, then you should not do it. Not only are spells not a quick fix, they are also alot of work. Not always in the performance, but in thinking and preparation. Most of the time, you will spend much more time planning and preparing for a spell than you will actually performing the spell.. Please, think it through before you do it. Make sure you have looked at every possible outcome. Even a simple spell that takes only a minute could seriously alter situations in a way you might not like. Spells can have a “domino effect”. You might get what you want, and change other things that you didn’t want changed in the process. . You could also mess up someone else’s life and this will come back on you. If you think this is too much work, then perhaps you don’t really need to do the spell as badly as you think. Also, bear in mind that spells are not only physical actions. You could go through the physical acts of performing a spell, follow them to a T, and accomplish absolutely nothing if you are lacking in emotion, need, visualization, concentration or desire. I know it may seem strange to say one could be lacking in desire if they are performing a spell for a certain purpose, but I think that sometimes we think we want things even when we know they are not for the best. A Basic Ritual Example Circle Cast , quarters called deity called and invoked statement of the purpose of the rituals, it can be done out loud, or just by visualizations. the actual working: It can be spell or esbat or sabbat ritual, or a ritual to honor a specific deity. energy is raised by dancing, chanting , drumming, etc. this is sometimes done before the working conclusion of the working, the energy is then bound into the spell Energy is released for manifestation Divinity and other powers are thanked and dismissed Quarters are thanked and dismissed Circle is taken down to release the traces of remaining energy Grounding to release excess energy All spells do not follow this formula. There are simple spells that consist of a single action. And not everything has to be done precisely this way, this is just a basic example. |
