Writing prompt: Box

It looked so unassuming sitting there on the shelf that I almost missed it. But since I was cleaning out Nattie's, also known as Great Aunt Natalie, closet at the nursing home, I made sure to get it.
I put it in the box with the other few knick knacks she had accumulated over the years and took them home to wait for Mom to pick them up after she finalized the funeral plans for Aunt Nattie. While driving home, I kept looking at the box, beginning to notice the fine woodwork and craftsmanship that had gone into it. It also looked older than I had at first thought, the dark color more from handling and time than stain.
As I pulled in the drive, I could wait no longer. Right there in the car, I pulled the box to me and rubbing my hands around it, felt how smooth the wood was. It had seen much handling in it's time. I had to know what Aunt Nattie treasured so much to have put in the box and then handled so often.
I slowly opened the box and saw Aunt Nattie's eyes staring back at me. It was her wedding photo from when she was married in 1950. She was sooooo skinny then. Great Uncle Ted was so handsome and tall. Behind the wedding photo were many other pictures of them throughout the 56 years they were married. Photos of their children, grand children, sisters, nieces and nephews, and the very last picture, was of me, a grand niece.
I let myself go ahead and cry, for what was precious to Aunt Nattie was us, her family. I will miss her greatly and I think she would like it if I kept her pictures and maybe, just maybe, add my own someday to what I now think of as my family history box.
