Chapter 1 please read and review

" Seven hundred years... Has it been that long since I've last seen you?" A laughing voice answered, "No, it's only been seven hours."

"It feels that long to me," the first voice replied.

"It does, doesn't it." The second voice stopped laughing, turning quiet. "I love you."

The first turned silent, lost in thought for a moment. "I love you too, Gabriel"

Those events haunted him still even in the bright lights, noise, pollution, and fast pace of this modern world.

"Selene." The name slipped softly from his lips, causing his face to twist in pain. The last few pieces of his heart contracted in regret. 'I've been faithful, Selene, but I don't think I can...' His thoughts stopped as his stomach growled, his nose picking up a sweet scent.

A young girl walked down the street, slightly swaying a beer bottle in her hand. He watched her for a few moments, a small smirk forming on his lips. She spotted him, stopped, and smiled, motioning him over.

He walked over, a smile forced on his face. "Yes?"

She looked up at him. "Do I know you?" She paused. Her brown eyes were dulled from the alcohol and her words were slurred. "You look familiar."

"No, I don't believe you do," he answered, shaking his head.

She continued to look up at him. "What's your name?"

"James," he replied, casually pulling the name from her mind.

"I do know you," she smiled. "You sit behind Jamie in Mr. Quake's class."

He nodded, confirming her answer. He smiled as she took another drink from her beer. "You look like you could use another place to stay...What's your name?"

"Melissa," she answered softly. "Do you know a place I could stay? This hangover is going to be hell in the morning."

"If you see morning," he muttered as his stomach growled again.

"What did you say?"

"My place is free."

She laughed, then smiled. "Thanks."

James looked up at the sky. Dark storm clouds were starting to come in. "Melissa," he grabbed her hand and tugged, "we need to get going. It's going to rain soon."

Melissa stumbled as he tugged her hand. "Are you in a hurry?"

His stomach growled again, this time the smell of blood starting to overpower him. He closed his eyes. "Yes, I don't want to get caught in the rain." A low rumble supported his claim.

She nodded. "Okay."

He pulled her lightly again and started walking. The sounds of the city disappeared as he looked for a place to hide them. He felt his darker instincts start to take over, and led her down an alley when Melissa stopped letting go of his hand.

She leaned against one of the buildings. "Do you live in one of these?" The alcohol had disoriented her vision, so she motioned between the two buildings.

James felt his fangs grow as she spoke. He turned, shaking his head, his fangs barely visible. "No I don't." He smiled, his fangs completely visible now in the low light.

Melissa blinked, her brain telling her to run, but her body remained unresponsive. She felt frozen in place. "W-Why can't I move?" she stammered, looking at him, some of the dullness in her eyes being replaced with fear.

He walked toward her, closing the small gap between them. He brushed her hair away from her neck.

She looked up at him. "Your a-a..." Her brain was unable to come up with the word.

"Vampire," he supplied, giving her a soft kiss on the lips. "Just relax, Melissa, this is nothing more than a dream." He let his lips trail to her neck.

She relaxed slightly, but braced herself, unsure of what was going to happen. Then she felt a sharp yet pleasing pain. It ended as soon as it came. Now, she felt like she was floating, her world slowly going dark. James' voice echoed softly in her head. "All a dream."

He gave an animal-like growl as the blood went down his throat, the knot in his stomach easing up. His arms wrapped around her waist, holding her as she started to fall. He left out a satisfied sigh as she pulled away, opening his eyes. They glowed a light bright blue as the blood did its work. He let her drop, uncaring. The rumble from the clouds gave warning as he walked from the alley, the noises assaulting his ears as the clouds opened up and the rain poured around him. James walked the streets, the memories pushed away for the moment, a smile on his face. The rain soaked him through, but he didn't care. He walked around the city with a calmer disposition. James' smile widened as he thought back on this latest feed. 'That was almost too easy,' he thought to himself. 'Some of the best I've had in quite a while.'

Lightning flashed as he walked, the smile on his face unchanging. He put his hands in his pockets, his fingers tracing a thin chain. Within a few seconds, the smile disappeared, his fingers continuing to trace the intricate links. His mind returned to the hour before. 'Selene, I don't think I can do this anymore. I've been alone too long. It's driving me insane.' He pulled the necklace from his pocket and looked at it, his eyes a mixture of sadness and regret. 'I need to forget you.' " You've turned me into a monster!" he yelled. "You left me like everyone else." The last part came out in a whisper as a tear fell down his cheek. James dropped to his knees, unaware of where he fell. The images started again.

He could see her face, eyes, and smile. All flashed clear as day behind his eyes. He remembered the night on Ranocco Hill when she'd said the three little words that had started this hell. "I love you" started echoing in his mind.

He tried to picture her happy, laughing, but all he could see was her face in pain, her eyes begging him to run. The blood flowing from her wounds, staining her dress. The villagers had beat and raped her. He'd stood off to the side and watched her blood start to soak the ground. It was having an effect on him the way Melissa's had. Selene's screams were still fresh, even after seven hundred years. The sound of the whip and fire all filled his mind, body, his very soul. James was completely unaware of the tears that ran down his cheeks. He was caught up in memories of the past.

The images and sounds didn't stop until he opened his eyes. Wiping his face, he sighed and looked down. Seemingly dead flowers covered a grave. James moved the flowers aside, revealing the letters etched in the centuries old stone. Selene Elisabeth Dakale looked as if it had just been carved. He looked at the necklace, then the stone, and back again. He calmly placed it there and sat, looking out at what was left of their forest. "I miss you so much it's slowly killing me," he spoke, looking down at the necklace. "Will you think me a monster for trying to move on? I love you with all my heart. I just can't stand to be alone any more."

He sighed and stood slowly, leaving the grave and necklace behind. The rain lessened as he walked down the hill to his home. As he opened the front door, he sighed and walked toward his room. "Please don't think me a monster," he said softly as he lay down on his bed and drifted to sleep. The sun came up sometime later. For once, he did not dream.

Chapter 2

"Why do you torment me so?" A pair of eyes slowly opened to stare at a blank white screen. Theresa sighed. "You do this to spite me, don't you?" she mumbled, closing and shutting down her laptop. She moved her gaze to the bookcase across from her. Various books filled the white shelves, all of them having a thin layer of dust, showing their level of use. She gave an annoyed sigh and rose, walking to the kitchen to fix herself a glass of water. 'The ideas come like lightning and leave just as quickly,' she thought as her eyes scanned the apartment. "I've been here for three months and no one has asked about rent. I wonder why…" She finished her drink and walked back into the living room. Her eyes looked around the fairly large space.

The apartment was all ready furnished when she had moved in. When she'd asked about the previous owners, the attendant had only said that they had been away for a long while. She'd debated then, but moved in anyway. For the first time, Theresa had felt "at home." Safe. She moved back to the couch and plopped down.

An old book caught her eye as she looked back over at her bookcase. It was bound in cracked leather with different pages sticking out among the classic and modern works that surrounded it. Theresa frowned slightly, stood, grabbed the book, and sat back down. She stared at the crack leather and slowly opened to the first brown-yellow page. The script on it looked just written, but was actually centuries old. She lightly traced her fingers over it, her eyes scanning the words, and her lips silently moving to read them.

After a moment, her eyes unfocused and she let the images carry her away. For a moment, she saw a flash of two lovers in a passionate embrace, then it was gone. She blinked, her vision returning to normal. She closed the book, her attention turning to the clock. "Damn it!" She bolted up from her spot.

The clock above the bookshelf read 9:40 am. "I'm going to be so late. Jaz is going to kill me again." She grabbed her black backpack and bolted out the door, leaving a stunned white cat in her wake. Theresa flew down the sidewalk to the Black Rose Café. She flew through the door and ran slam into a tall redhead, both falling to the floor.

"Hey Theresa," came weakly from beneath her.

"I'm so sorry, Jaz! I spaced out and didn't notice the time. Please don't kill me again."

Jaz got up and dusted himself off. "You know I can't do that, even if I wanted to. I can only kill you every 2 lifetimes."

Theresa nodded and walked into the back room, changing into her work clothes. She started moving around the kitchen, pulling things from here and there, getting everything set up before the flood.

"Thank god the hell is over," she muttered as she left the café, her bag bouncing on her shoulder. The sun was setting by now. People were out in the street, laughing and talking, the sun casting everything in an orange gold glow. She hummed softly as she looked around, making her way to the bus stop. She sat down on one of the benches and took her bag from her shoulder. Opening it, she pulled out a small book and pen and began writing notes, while waiting for the bus. A small brown bag peaked out from the opening. A few minutes later, she boarded and sat down, staring out the window as it took her to DeBaso Park.

The trip only lasted about twenty minutes, but to Theresa it felt like an hour. "Maybe it's because I'm antsy about seeing grandmother again after all this time," she muttered to herself as she bid the driver good-bye and stepped onto the small dirt trail that would lead her to her destination.

The walk itself was very pleasant. Large trees lined the path as she walked. Some were covered with vines, others with fairy rings. She'd always loved walking to her grandmother's—it made her feel like she was stepping back into a simpler time and place. The sunlight caused the sky to form a rainbow of different colors. She smiled as she walked and, out of habit, started humming softly to herself an old melody that her mother had sung. Her eyes scanned the area around, memories of her childhood playing in her mind as a large old cottage style house appeared in her view.

The house was well kept despite its nearly ancient look. The trail she was on widened into a small road leading up to the front door. 'I've missed this place,' she thought to herself as she paused for a moment, taking everything in. Nothing had changed since the last time she'd been here almost five years ago. 'That was before life got in the way.' Her thoughts nearly continued on that, but she pushed them away and made her way to the front door. She hesitated a moment before knocking on the door. It was opened by a short lady with silver white hair.

"Can I help you dear?" she asked, her voice stern but kind.

Theresa nodded her head. "Yes Nana, it's me, Theresa. I'm sorry for not coming to visit sooner," she explained slowly.

Nana stared up at Theresa, her blue-gray eyes having no recognition in them. "My daughter and granddaughter died five years ago," she replied, her eyes flashing anger and disappointment as she closed the door, leaving Theresa standing there with a look of confusion and sadness. She turned and slowly began her walk back up the trail. Slinging the bag down off one shoulder, she took the brown bag out and opened it. Cypress, cinnamon , rose , and honeysuckle floated around her. A small smile formed on her lips as she took a right and walked toward Ranocco Hill.

James awoke as the sun finally disappeared to its resting place. Memories of the night before played in his head. 'Why do I feel like an idiot?' his mind questioned him. "Because you are," he muttered to himself as he got out of bed and went to his window to open the curtains. He stood there for a moment just looking out at everything, trying to sort the memories out. Finally, he sighed, turned from the window, and began to get dressed. 'I need to see David.' The idea made him smile. David would know how to cheer him up.

He left his home and, in a matter of seconds, was standing outside of Sparkles. The building was a gay club about four miles from DeBosa Park. "David should be here; he always is on Thursdays." James slipped in silently, his eyes scanned the packed place. Lights flashed and music blared as his glaze stopped on a tall blond sitting at a corner table. He made his way and sat down.

"Hey David," he yelled over the music.

The brunette beside the blond turned and stared at him with bright green eyes, a smile on his pink lips. "Hello,Gabriel, how have you been?"

James smiled. "Long time no see, David." He took the redhead's hand and shook it. David grinned well. "What's on your mind honey?"

James paused, thinking over what he was about to say. "I said good bye to her."

David's eyes widened. "What? Why did you do such a thing? I though both of you were meant to be together!" David's voice went up a pitch at the news.

James shook his head. "Apparently we are not. Otherwise, she would've come back by now. I'm tired of being alone. You've been immortal longer than I have and you've found someone to love. I guess I'm destined to be alone."

David laughed at his friend's lament. "Took me almost a thousand years to find William, but I did. Please don't be so heartbroken and sad, Gab, it doesn't suit you." He ran his hand across his cheek in an affectionate matter.

James smiled and stood. "Care if I buy you a drink?"

David just smiled, then shook his head. "No thanks, baby, just help yourself and tell Bo to put it on my tab. I'll be here if you want to talk more."

James nodded and walked off to the bar. Finding a small table in the back, he sat down. One of this favorite spots in the entire club was this one. He was hidden, yet he could see everything and most importantly everyone.

As James disappeared, David turned back to his companion. "Do you think he will be alright?" David stared at William, who had been silent the entire conversation.

"I don't know," came a feminine voice. "He's been through much worse physically, but then again, the spirit is a very odd thing. We will just have to wait and see how he does, love." William placed her hand over his and gave a reassuring smile.

David nodded in agreement and glanced toward where James was. He was talking to Bo. 'Probably ordering a mix of suicide and acid,' he figured before standing up and pulling William up with him to dance.

Bo took down the order and stared at him. "Are you all right Gabriel? You seem lost."

James turned his head and looked up at her, his eyes betraying his emotionless face. 'Damn they are doing it again.'

She stared down at him. "What'd you do? Your eyes are saying it's something stupid." She sat down across from him and waited.

Purple eyes looked intensely at him. He sighed and looked at her sadly. "I said good bye to her" came out quietly.

Bo looked at him and frowned. "I think you've given up too soon, Gab. What made you do that anyway?"

"I don't know. I just felt like I needed a break, I guess," he supplied weakly.

"Lies," she said and stared at him. "Tell me the truth."

"I'm sick of being alone. I'm tired of having no one to love. I miss her so much. I feel like I'm destined to suffer for the one thing I didn't prevent. Is this payback for the innocent blood I let spill?" He paused, letting that sink in. "I really miss her. David thinks I've given up too soon."

Bo watched his face then frowned and moved some of her black hair away from her eyes. "I think you have, too, Gabriel. How do you know she hasn't come back, just in a different body."

He blinked at the thought. "I hadn't thought of that." He ran a hand through his hair. "My fault, huh?"

She smiled. "It always is." She stood and walked from the table. A few moments later, she came back with his drink and set it down in front of him with a smile.

James gave a halfhearted smile as he took a sip of his drink and thought over the possibility that his angel could be alive. Once he finished his drink, he left as he stepped out of the club. He smiled and turned his gaze to the moon. "I'll find you soon," he said softly as he walked away.

David watched as Gabriel left, a small smile on his face but worry in his eyes. 'I hope he can survive this.'

Chapter 3

Theresa stopped at the top of the hill, a few feet from Selene's grave. She looked at it calmly, then down at the bag. 'Since Nana won't accept my gift, I'm sure you will.' Kneeling down, she placed the bag down, then folded her hands together and said a small prayer.

Light glowed softly around her hands, then circled around the bag and necklace. "Please let Nana forgive us for what we did five years ago." She opened her eyes after a moment and blinked when she noticed the necklace. "Where did you come from?" she whispered softly as her hand lightly traced the symbol at the bottom of the chain. Pictures started to flash in front of her eyes again.

Screams filled her ears as did the crack of a whip. She turned and saw cobalt blue eyes staring at her, unfeeling. She looked down and saw blood on the ground. The images faded after that. Her eyes snapped open. Theresa's breathing was labored and she stared out at the forest for a moment before slowly coming back to reality.

She shivered, before standing up and making her way back down the hill, trail, and then finally to the bus stop. She gave a smile as she boarded, finally feeling safe. She sat down, drawing a slow breath, trying to calm herself down. 'Those eyes looked familiar. Where have I seen them before?' She turned her head and looked out the window, trying to figure out that one thought..

The bus dropped her at her stop. She walked the last block to her home and entered it, silently dropping her keys on the table out of habit, and made her way to her room. There she sat down on the bed and looked around her room, then out her glass balcony doors at the moon. "Have I gone crazy?" she muttered softly to herself.

Suddenly, she felt something land on her bed. Looking over, large blue eyes looked up at her, followed by a loud meow, and then purring. Theresa smiled, and then scratched Nip on the cheek. He curled up next to her, content at being loved. 'You're the only guy that's ever really loved me.' She continued to rub him for a few more minutes before lying down. She continued to stare at the moon until she fell asleep.

Her breathing became soft and even as Eros pulled the blanket of sleep completely over her. Theresa mumbled softly before snuggling down in her blankets.

The dream always started out the same. She stood in a large field of flowers, the wind blew her hair softly as she began to walk toward the forest. She never noticed the patch of dark red in the sky. The walk reminded her of the trail to her grandmother's calm and quiet. As she traveled deeper into the forest everything seemed to become more alive and enchanted. The leaves seemed to sparkle, the flowers glowed. She paused for a moment then bent down to smell one of the flowers beside her.

She slowly raised her head just enough to see through some of vines around one of the trees. The glint of water caught her eye and she followed seemingly pulled by something. Theresa's footsteps quickened into a light run as she emerged from the trees around her into a small clearing. A small gasp escaped her lips as she took in the sight before her.

The clearing was relatively small. A stream ran a few feet away from her. Willows surrounded most of the area and hid the entrace well. She gave a content sigh as she sat down next to the stream and gazed into it. How long she looked at the stream she didn't know. As she raised her eyes from the rushing water she noticed that the sky has gone dark. No moon welcomed her. Theresa stood and made her way to the entrace when a snap caused her to stop. Fear seized her as she started to move the curtain of vines away fire flew at her face. In shock she stumbled backwards and fell landing hard on her back. When she opened her eyes saw a man with angery brown eyes staring down at her.

"Hello Demon," he spoke softly but his voice was filled with wickednes as his eyes gave a glint in the tourch light. "tell Lucier I said hello."

A soft gasp came from her lips as a dagger was placed at her throat. "W-Why do you want to kill me?"

"Because you are evil and have danced in fire." the man said loud enough to be heard by the others around then leaned down pressing the blade just enough to draw blood and whispered in her ear. "and because you left me."

Her eyes widened at both the comment and the thin line the blood traveling from her neck to her chest. She felt the blade press deeper and she gave a small cry closing her eyes to accept what was to come.

The sound of a wrist snapping and the removal of the blade caused her eyes to open. The sight in front of her was strange. A man stood in front of her,his back in her line of sight he had dark wings.

The winged savior threw the other man away from her then slowly turned his head. Theresa felt her heat pick up a bit at being able to see his face but just as it was about to come into full view everything went black.

"Damn it" she muttered as she beat her alarm into silence then sighed as she opened her eyes. Sunlight flitered into the room through her drapes and pooled on the floor where Nip was peacefully sleeping completely sprawled out.

She raised up and gave a small giggle seeing him flat on his back his paws tucked under his chin. Theresa got out of bed slipping past him and into the shower the remains of the dream still fuzzy in the back of her mind.

As she stepped out of the shower, she noticed a thin red line on her throat being reflected from her mirror.. She stared at it blinking a few times before shaking her head dismissing it as her overactive imagination.

A few hours later, Theresa sat in her living room starting at her TV with misty eyes. Romeo and Juliet was playing before her. Juliet had just kissed Romeo one last time before taking the gun in her hand. Theresa turned her head away as the gun fired, a small tear rolling down her cheek.

James had stayed out 'til the last possible second before he appeared in his home, just as the sun peaked over the horizon. He smiled (a slightly crooked one, but a smile nonetheless). He had spent the night, for the first time since Selene's death, enjoying it. The sights, sounds, and smells were new to him again. James turned his gaze to his bed for a moment, debating going to sleep. The small voice in his heart said, "Stay up." James' body didn't listen, much to his heart's dismay. His body found its way to the bed where it promptly fell asleep. His mind remained active more so than it had in a long, while his dreams were filled with how Selene might have changed.

A small smile formed on his lips as he pictured her smiling face again—this time, with red hair instead of her white blonde along with deep brown eyes. 'Would her voice still be as soft and quiet as it was?' his mind wondered. "No, it would be a bit louder to fit with this world but still have that softness in it," he mumbled softly in his sleep as his mind put the two together. James softly shook his head at the thought, his mind continuing this trial and error throughout his sleep.

He awoke surprisingly early despite his late retirement just as the sun went down. Stretching lazily, he slowly opened his eyes and looked around the dark room. Yawning, he got out of bed and into the shower. The pictures he had come up with in his sleep had mostly vanished, except for one or two.

James' mood was good today. He felt calm, not really happy, but he felt better than he had in a long while. He went to his closet and looked through it. Selene popped into his head.

The first time he had brought her here was because she had asked to see his home. He was reluctant at first but eventually agreed.

When she had first seen his closet, Selene had drawn back in horror. "How can you be so bland!" she had exclaimed seeing nothing but black.

James had looked at her as if she had grown two heads. "What's wrong with my clothes?" he had replied in defense. "I think they suit me fine."

Selene turned and stared up at him, a strange glint in her eye as she spoke calmly. "I`m going to liven you up." He had taken a step back at this statement, uncomfortable with what she had meant.

She had grabbed his hand and led him out of his room and into the fairly large living room where there was better light. Not much, but it had better then his room. A measuring tape had seemed to appear out of nowhere to James. Selene then set to work, measuring here and there.

It had taken everything James had had to stay still and not show how uncomfortable he was with her flittering around him. How long it had taken her, he could not remember. It must have only been a few minutes, but to him it had felt like hours.

She had smiled and then sat down, starting to make him a shirt. The materials seemed to appear out of thin air. The style had been something completely different for the times. Selene had finished in a matter of minutes. James had quietly taken it and put it on. Buttoning the last button, he stood there, his arms lightly folded across his chest and feeling the material move with him.

It had felt like liquid silk against his skin as he slowly moved, his upper body feeling how the fabric moved. A tiny smile had crept to the corner of mouth. Selene had seen it and smiled. He had politely thanked her for it and then took it off, putting it into his closet.

"Could never say no to that face of hers." he said softly.

James' fingers found the shirt now. The fabric still held like the day it was stitched, and it moved the same between his fingers. He stood there for a moment, debated, and then put the shirt on. The same small smile formed on his lips.

Theresa sat in front of her laptop scrolling through the events section of the city news paper trying to find something to do. She was tired of having nothing to do, most of her friends were busy with other things, and she wanted to get out for a little bit. Her eyes scanned the events in front of her

An advertisment caught her eye. A new exibit at the museum opened in a few hours. The theme was unannounced. She smiled as she scrolled a bit more locking a few other events in her mind before shutting the laptop down and going into her room .

The air outside has a slight bite in it that caused a small smile to form on her face as she walked down the sidewalk toward the museum. Theresa passed many many people with shopping bags. Greens, reds, blues, whites, silvers seemed to be neverending as she finally stopped in front of the large brick building that was the city's largest museum.

She stood outside the large oak doors for a few minutes debating if she wanted to enter or wait a moment, as she did her eyes scanned the people hurrying around her. Theresa's gaze locked on a pair of dark brown eyes. A shiver ran through her as she quickly broke the gaze then opened the large doors and went inside.
