You were there with me, yes you were
Although our memories unfocussed do blur
They were good times, a happy warmth in the air
We knew how to live then, the things we would share.
Mosaics on the walls and pottery fine
We could be who we were no toeing the line
Scantily clad with trinkets of gold
But that life faded before we grew old.
The jade in my necklace lasted longer than me
Our demise is now public for all now to see
And historians venture to discover lots more
Of how we lived so many centuries before.
You were there with me, yes you were
You watched the sky darken and what was to occur
You remember the rumblings and that peculiar smell
Before we fell victim to a living hell.
We ran through the narrow streets looking to flee
People were screaming including you and me
It was the end of the world, that's what we thought
As panic devoured us our solace we sought.
The sky was on fire, the air putrid to breathe
Chaos ensued, there was no time to grieve
For the ones that had fallen down in the streets
As death came a calling those people to greet.
You were there with me, yes you were
You'll know by the emotions that my words now stir
Deep inside of you in a strange kind of way
As they bring back memories of our lives in Pompeii.
