England Swings

Holy FUCK have I been having the best time of my life or what? Let's begin with what I did yesterday.

The first thing I did was go to Buckingham Palace and watch the changing of the guard, which was very entertaining, but it was rather hard to see everything because I'm not exaggerating when I say that a somewhere around a million people decided to go the same day as me. However I did manage to get a few pokey wee photos and a few snippets of video.

After that I took the underground to the Tower of London, which was awesome in how it's like 800 years old and had so many people tortured and murdered there, including a large number of famous historical figures. I saw the crown jewels, the famous ravens, and the place that Sir Walter Ralegh himself was imprisoned, and took a tour of the place guided by a uniformed yeoman. That in itself was fantastic and time consuming but the day was still young. After that I found myself cruising down Fleet Street on the top deck of a classic double-decker bus heading for Trafaglar Square thinking, how fucking London is this!? Then I sat in Trafalgar square for a late lunch which included Scotland's famous Irn Bru and a Krispy Kreme which really are the best doughnuts in the world.

Then I took a lovely stroll down Whitehall with my mouth hanging open the whole time gawping at the amazing buildings which line the streets, absolutely brilliant. Then I found myself standing at the foot of Big Ben, then I walked over the bridge and had a look at the enormous London Eye. During the day I was stopped three times by people who wanted to take pictures of me, I didn't even dress up but it was nice feeling like a bit of a celeb for no reason ;) Yesterday was like playing real life Monopoly!

Now for today. Today I died and went to heaven, OMG! Camden Town! Shop after shop selling goth, punk, and all kinds of alternative garb. Bondage pants, platform shoes, and lolita skirts as far as the eye could see, I think several of my organs might of burst from over excitement! I ended up buying a pair of jeans, a dress, a shirt, hairdye, a bag and two silver rings, I had to leave or I would have made myself poor. It was like all the beautiful things that you drool over on the internet, but in real life for much cheaper and with ten times more variety (well for us in NZ you can't get shit all).

After that I wanted to visit Dr Johnson's House (the man who wrote the dictionary) but I took a wrong turn and ended up quite far from where I wanted to be. So I decided not to bother and go for a walk instead. I went into a Krispy Kremes shop for more sweet goodies and asked the bloke there for directions on how to get to Fleet Street. And he was like, "Where?"

"Fleet Street"

"What street, can you spell that for me?"

"You know, Fleet Street"

"Uh... I don't know what you mean"

"You seriously haven't heard of Fleet Street, how can you not have?"

But then the girl standing next to him intervened and told me that I was miles away and it was better to take a bus, but since I was on a walk I looked at my map and it took only ten minutes to walk there. Once again I was surrounded by so many amazing buildings, it was just fantastic. Then I took another classic double-decker bus to Royal Albert Hall, and from there I walked to Harrod's. Yes I know! The first thing I looked at was a £300 umbrella, then a £999 coat, and then a £4000 milk jug.

Tomorrow the plan is go to the London Dungeon, which everyone repeatedly tells me that I'll just love. Then I want to see Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. I will definitely, definitely be coming back to London!

Here's a few photos, they're not the greatest because it was quite a grey day and the light settings on my camera aren't the best, but here you go:

And while we're at it, here are my PRAGUE PHOTOS

Well that's all for now, byeeee!

Bohemian Rhapsody

The Czech Republic, a nation obsessed with mushrooms, where "No" means "Yes", everyone drives a škoda, and you can shout "ahoy!" without sounding like a prat.

With only six days remaining in my sojourn in Prague, I suppose I really should write about what Ive been up to. Ive seen all manner of amazing and beautiful historical things, like Orloj, a 500-600 year old Astronomical clock, Charlies Bridge where I touched the statue of Charles cause its meant to be lucky, visited the National Museum which was easily the most impressive building ive ever seen the inside of, seen a 12th century pub, seen lots of spectacular churches and cathedrals, and took a day trip to Kutná Hora, where I visited Kostnice (the Bone Church), a gothic chapel the inside of which is decorated with 40000 human skeletons! Ive taken somewhere around a zillion photos which I will put up for you all when I can get internet on my laptop. Yesterday I went to a museum of Medieval Torture Instruments which was cool too, and last week visited Karlštejn castle, where Kylie Minogue was apparently visiting the same time I was there, but didnt realise till it was on the news that night! I also went to the Marionette Theatre and saw a puppet opera! But seriously, walking through central Prague is a visual symphony, everywhere you turn theres something beautiful to behold.

Alcohol and being drunk everyday is important to Czech people, and beer and spirits are insanely cheap, and you can even buy cannabis flavoured Absinthe or Vodka. Cigarettes are cheap too, like a pack of twenty will cost you around four dollars. Cheese and salami is cheap and has been pretty much what Ive been living off. The beer is surpringly good, even I like it and that is saying something.

When I say everyone here drives I škoda, Im serious, something like 90% of cars are škodas, but Ive also seen plenty of Ladas, a Russian car fondly known as the worst car ever made, lol.

Before I came here plenty of people told me, "dont worry most people will speak English" which I was right not to expect, because thats bollocks and they dont. People are remarkably rude, particularly at information desks. So Ive taught myself enough Czech to get around, and since I successfully figured out how to order a smažený sýr, Ive been quite happy. Smažený sýr meaning a thick piece of melty cheese in breadcrumbs, which you can buy everywhere, and between bread makes the most delicious but unhealthy burger of all time.

I havent met another New Zealander the whole time Ive been here, Ive met two Aussies, loads of English and American people, but I feel like the only Kiwi for a hundred miles. Its been interesting being here and theres a few things still left for me to see, but the novelty of being here has well and truely worn off and Im greatly anticipating Saturday when Ill be going to London. Rather amazingly Ive had loads of inspiration for my books, and heaps of time to write them. What I love about Prague is the screeds of history, beautiful buildings, cheap food and alcohol. What I dont love is not being able to read or communicate, and much of the outer city is kinda shit. As for the mushroom obsession, thats true too, and I even went mushrooming with my friend Jiří. We picked mushrooms which his dad cooked into eggs the next day, but the perturbing part of this is how they always keep one mushroom in the fridge to show the doctor incase you get poisoned. Another thing is that evil giant killer death bees of doom do exsist. One day in a pub I saw the biggest bee of all time, and Jiří told me to "run like hell" when he noticed it.

Well I think thats all for now, ahoj, nazdar, nashedanou, ciao!

If you love Prague you would love Vienna even more. Prague is lovely and interesting but there isn't THAT much there. Vienna is a major city with a grander history and grander architecture. As for language - it depends to whom you are speaking - older Czechs speak more Russian, younger Czechs more English. Everything is cheap because there is less wealth - I am slightly emarassed when I visit my friends there. They DO drive a 1970s Skoda lol but I enjoy the chance to spoil them - I can take them out for a nice three course meal for a fraction of what it would cost me in England.

They also love their mead (medovina in Czech) - which I enjoy immensely lol
