Stupid

23:28 Aug 30 2009
Times Read: 830

How stupid is THIS? The Mercury Marine plant in Fond du Lac, is going to close, and the jobs transferred to a non-union plant in Oklahoma..because the union turned down the contract, citing wage and benefits reductions as the reason.

Um...it was a four year contract, and employees were to give up a 2% raise in the last two years of their contract...also the benefits would have been reduced slightly, citing the general state of the economy.

Isn't that stupid? Now, because they decided they couldn't give up a measly TWO PER CENT raise..their jobs are all gone. Poof! They were averaging $20 an hour up there. Gone! To other people in Oklahoma, who are probably having a good old celebration at this news.

Happy now, union? Shit.

Movie Lines

I just finished watching "The Shawshank Redemption" for about the umpteenth time. I love that movie more each time I see it.

It has two lines that are classic:

"Get busy livin', or get busy dyin'."

"Put your trust in the Lord. Your ass belongs to me."

Day off!

16:42 Aug 29 2009
Times Read: 852

Woo...I got a weekend off. This is my first free weekend since I hurt my back several weeks ago. And of course the weather is crappy, but I hadn't planned any outdoor activities anyway so that's fine with me.

I have a boatload of errands to run. Been waiting till I felt better before I tried to "do" things again. I need to go to the pet store (more crab stuff!), grocery store, and Wal-Mart for some odds and ends.

I bought some of those Eat This, Not That! books....those are an excellent source of info as to what you should and should not eat. They break down the calorie count, sodium and sugar counts for many foods you buy, also they get into restaurant chains and what they serve so you can make better choices when you eat out. I see several things that I buy regularly are not quite as healthy as they should be, so the book is going with me to the grocery store and I am going to try some alternative products. Luckily I am not a food snob, I will try anything. I'm not chained to the big brands. Generic can be just fine.

The crabs and birds need food and treats, then I am going to get a new coffee maker and some other things at Wal-Mart. I usually end up in the DVD section so a couple of those might come home with me too.

Off to the races. Back later.

Your eyes don't change colour with your mood. Lies!

OCD

00:45 Aug 26 2009
Times Read: 883

I saw the darndest thing the other day. I was sitting in McDonald's drive thru, waiting to get my heart-healthy meal (insert hysterical laughter here) and I happened to glance over to where people park their cars.

A man got out of this brown car. He was nicely dressed, a shirt, tie and trousers. Looked like a businessman. He stood beside the car for a moment, then touched each of the buttons on his shirt, then he touched the car. Then he patted his pocket, touched each shirt button, and then touched the car again.

Suddenly a woman's voice from the car (the windows were down) "For Christ's sake! I WILL GET IT ! GET BACK IN THE CAR!!!"

The man stood there for a moment, touched his buttons again, and got back in the car. The woman got out, slammed the car door, and huffed off into McDonald's, coming out soon after with two ice cream cones.

I had never actually seen an OCD episode before. Felt kind of sorry for the guy. Nothing like being humiliated in public to get your self esteem up, sheesh.

Doctor Visit

00:55 Aug 22 2009
Times Read: 899

What a crappy day. It poured raining all day, which made my sinusitis flare up. So when I went to the doctor, so he can take another look at my back and make sure I'm healing all right, I'm all stuffed up, and when he makes me bend over, I feel like my head is going to come off. Arggh.

Anyways, he said I am almost back to normal. I still have a hard time tying my shoes in the morning, because I'm stiff when I first wake up, but this should improve. I was telling him about a few side effects I had when I first hurt my back, which he seemed very interested in.

First of all, the first couple of nights after I first hurt my back, I had the most horrible night sweats imaginable. Never had them before. Hot flashes, sure, but never soaked the sheets through like I did then. And, it was just from the waist down. Up top I was fine. And after a couple of days those night sweats ceased.

The other thing was, for the whole week I was off work, resting, I could not fart. I mean, it was like someone flipped a switch. I also was extremely constipated, to the point where I had to take laxatives to get things moving, which normally I never need to do.

Doc said this is fairly common with people who hurt themselves in the lower back or around the waist, especially if it's a first time injury and a good one. It's a shock to the system, which reacts by slowing down so the injured bits can heal. Well, that made sense. Even coughing and sneezing hurt, and I had no idea they were somehow attached to my lower back, lol.

Anyways, as long as I don't lift heavy things directly from the floor I should be right as rain real soon. The doctor suggested some early morning stretching exercises, so I can bend over and tie my shoes. I told him I am not properly awake until at least 10 am, so anything "early" is a bit questionable!

Hell, I was born at 3:15 in the afternoon. I was not meant to be up early, obviously. Heh.

Back update

01:19 Aug 18 2009
Times Read: 925

The back is finally better, phew. That was about two weeks of hell that I wouldn't wish on anyone. Though I am still stiff when I first wake up, as I go through the day it seems to loosen and by the time I am home I am good as new.

However, a new and decidedly funky side effect has reared its head. Injuring my back and right side has kicked my sciatica into high gear. Oy vey. Shooting pains down my butt and the back of my leg. Luckily they go away as the day goes by but first thing in the morning...the doctor recommended I do butt clenches, which amazingly, do help. So anyone with sciatica, try some strong butt clenches.

End of medical update, for the nonce.

I'm Baaaaaaaaaaaaaack

04:15 Aug 16 2009

Hello VR, I am finally back after a week's absence. The bad storms that rolled through here last weekend fried two of my modems, and I decided just to get a new PC, but I had to wait till payday to do it, so I was offline here for a week.

Any good news? Anyone have a kid? Get married? Divorced? Become undead?

At the same time the storms rolled through, I had a little accident here at home and tore some muscles in my lower back and right hip. I don't recommend that to anyone. It hurt to move any kind of way. Sit up, lay down, walk, whatever, it was all bad. I am slowly healing, but it's taking a long damn time and I want my life back. I can't tie my shoes or even put socks on..anything that involves bending over from the waist is painful as hell. If I keep moving, my back feels better, but if I'm on my feet too long it really hurts.

Here's the wonderful thing..I was supposed to be off this week for my vacation, but my bosses told me to take last week since I was on medical leave. Flat on my back, unable to do a damn thing..oh yeah. That was a lovely vacation.

Hmm anyone got a voodoo doll out there..lol.

Backache part Three

Anyone know how to make a back sprain go away before Monday lol...I have been off work all week with this damn thing. It is a lot better than it was the first of the week, but it only feels really good when I'm laying down. I've been doing that, but I can't lay down all the time...gotta get up and get food and so on.

Oh, and don't cough hard or sneeze..lol that hurts! So I haven't been around here as much as I usually am..and I see two of my pupils have flown my Mentorship while I was away without so much as a "bye!" So, I'm probably gonna close that out and just concentrate on my duties as AHM of La Bella Oscuridad.

And may I say, since I don't think it has been said, and it NEEDS to be said...we have the BEST House Master...not only is she an immensely talented lady, but also funny, wise, and hey, she comes from my home state of Wisconsin...yes the magnificent Morrigon folks!

I feel a lot better. Man, there are wonder drugs today aren't there? I don't have much experience with pain meds, since all I normally take is Tylenol or something..but I got some good stuff and it made my back feel a lot better.

I have some strained back muscles, and have to take it easy for a few days. Resting on a heating pad makes me feel a lot better too, and the doc said alternate that with an ice pack.

Since I have this week off I am hoping to at least do a few things later on when I feel more like myself.

I have well and truly messed my back up. Last night I had some sort of coughing attack, and when I went to sit up I jerked a strange way and there went my back. Agony.

I have been laying on a heating pad and taking ibruprofen and that seems to help some. Anything that drops on the floor is just going to have to stay there for the moment lol as I can't bend over that far. Getting up and down is hell, but once I'm up or down I'm ok.

I think I'd rather have a screaming migraine. Now I have to stop and think before I move. I laid down on the sofa for awhile and I almost couldn't get back up by myself, sheesh.

Not looking forward to work tomorrow.

Bird Training

02:59 Aug 01 2009
Times Read: 836

A good way to get a bird tame is to let him see another bird on your hand, eating from it. My parakeet was intently watching my cockatiel eat a treat I held, and I saw the parakeet was interested so I held out a treat for him.

After a little hesitiation the parakeet took a nibble, then another, then happily munched while I held the coveted treat. When it got down to my fingertips the parakeet examined them with his beak but didn't bite, just tested it out.

Then the budgie sat quite still and allowed me to stroke his breast. I found this quite extraordinary as I have had him for some time now and he never allowed this before. His previous owner must have put him off people but I am slowly getting him used to handling and more attention. Once you win these little guys' trust they never take it back.

My last parakeet was 10 when he passed away, and a greater character never lived I am sure. He bonded to me so closely and called me "mama". When I would come home I would call out "where's Little B?" (his name) and where ever he was in the apartment he would say back "there he is!"

Of course all birdies are different, and the one I have now doesn't talk, but I love him just the same.
