Titanic

The other night I was watching the National Geographic channel, it had a two hour Titanic special with James Cameron, the director of the movie Titanic. He's become something of a Titanic buff, diving to the wreck many times, and doing books and specials about it.

This time, he had assembled a team of experts...from the head of the Titanic Historical Society to naval specialists and everyone in between, to try and trace back what happened to the ship after it hit the iceberg. Specifically, what happened to the stern, the last bit that went in the water, where all the people were gathered at the last. Why did that sustain much more damage than the bow?

After two hours and much discussion, computer models and charts and diagrams, answers were formed. But hey, Mr Cameron, the anwers you and your team came up with were the same answers put forth by Robert Ballard, who discovered the wreck of the ship in 1985. Had you bothered to watch any of Ballard's dvds or even look up some old footage on youtube, you could have saved yourself some time, trouble and money.

The bow (front end of the ship) filled up with water first because that's where it was damaged first. That section pulled the rest of the ship down and eventually broke it in two. The bow went down and settled on the bottom of the ocean, 2 1/2 miles down. The bow did sustain some damage on the way down and when it hit bottom, but nothing like the stern.

The stern looks like a bomb went off on it. Whole decks are collapsed, most of it is crushed. It took Mr Cameron all this time to work out the obvious....when the stern finally went into the water, not all of it was full of water, so as it descended, it was not pressure compensated, and it blew apart. Damage was also done to it from the water that surrounded the stern as it dropped...the ship stopped on the bottom, but the force of the water coming down with it didn't.

Honest to geez, it made me laugh to watch these learned guys scratching their heads trying to figure out what the hell happened to that ship on the way down. They must not have watched anyone else's documentaries or read any books, because it's all there.

Well, anyway, it was entertaining. And if you fancy going down to the wreck yourself, save your pennies, kids. For $40,000 a Russian company ferries people down and back. They said people have even got married down there.

The 100th aniversary of the actual sinking is this Saturday night.

I find it hard to believe that Yahoo actually ran an article about how some people these days didn't even know Titanic was anything more than a movie- They're probably married to the same people who think the lunar landing was filmed in a studio....

My grandmother was four when it happened. Fortunately, she wasn't on that ship, but it makes me think that 100 years isn't really that long ago.

Stuff and more Stuff

Still plodding along. I had thought to have something more positive to report, but alas no. Not knowing exactly where to begin with this, but wanting to find out about continuing my education in some new field, I called the business school close to me. Since the budget crunch a couple years back, scholarships are few and far between, and most of those go to really bright high school kids who know to apply early.

Now here's the thing. I seem to fall between the cracks someway. I am too old to get help that would go to young people, or single parents, and too young to get help that might go to senior citizens. And my income seems to be an issue. Since when does $15,500 (my 2011 income) place me in a high-income category? That's pretty damn low if you ask me. WAY below the poverty level. Anyway. The only option available would be to take classes as I can afford them, which seems to be far in the future, as the ones I want are quite early in the evening or afternoon when I am working, or too expensive to afford just now. Poop.

On the plus side, I got transcripts of my high school grades, which were better than I remembered. The lowest grade was a B+ in American History, which surprised me. But as the nice admissions lady told me, today's graduates have to make better grades than that to qualify for assistance. So feck.

Dunno what to do now. Stick it out where I am, I guess, until they fire me or I shoot myself.

I hate to think of you in that situation- it can really drag you down. But then again, leaving them and having them ralize just how much they depended on you will be its own reward. Are these the same people who always insited you come for holiday dinner, took careof the parents when they got in your way, etc? what a turn around.....looks mighty suspicious if'n you ask me...

Here's a link that might help you find out what all the other available resources there are out there for you. Not a silver bullet by any means but hopefully more than just the school guidance counselor: http://servicelocator.org/

Just wanted to thank everyone publicly who wished me a happy birthday. I appreciate all your kindness and good wishes. Still going through this funk at work. It's like they don't dare fire me because there's no proof and they're afraid I'm going to trot down to a lawyer and sue their ass for wrongful dismissal, but then I have to work with them every day and they're watching, watching, watching. Now, you say, let them watch, there's nothing to see, right? You aren't doing anything wrong, so let them watch.

It's depressing as all hell. I'm pretty much stuck at the moment, because the job situation here is pretty dire. Been thinking about going back to school, maybe taking some courses, but how would that work? How could I go to school and pay my bills? No idea. No idea how to start.

Gotta do something. It's bringing me way down.

Just start the process. Start looking into what you might want to do school wise. Check out what's available. Let the money side of it worry about itself until you really need to deal with it. Just the act of trying to take back control of your life will start to make you feel better. Personal message me if you want some extra help.
