Went to the pet store today. Had to get some crab and bird stuff, as my greedy horde goes through their food and treats at an amazing rate. I wonder sometimes if the crabs in the pet store get enough to eat, because after I bring them home they are constantly at the food dish.
I buy three different types of hermit crab food and mix them. One is a pellet food, which I don't think they eat much but they seem to like tossing it around. There is a powdered food that they like, and something called Fruit and Flower crab food. For a treat they get the fruit salad which is tiny dehydrated bits of apple, cranberry and mango. I add water to this to get it moist, and put it in a little dish.
Crabs need calcium to keep their exoskeleton hard and help in moulting, so I buy hermit crab salt and add it to their water. I also get them little calcium blocks that they nibble on.
To round things off, as several crabs have been enthusiastically changing shells lately, I bought a few extra empty shells, which go in the tank. The little guys love exploring anything new that I put in there.
Last night, several little ones were toddling around, some of them still aren't used to me yet. I walked by and peeked in just as one was on the edge of the water dish...then he saw me and whoops! He tipped over and fell in. I fished him out and dried him off and set him back in the tank, and before long he was toddling back to the water dish. I made sure to stay away until he had finished this time! The older crabs are so used to me peeking in and reaching in to pick them up that they aren't bothered anymore. Some of them walk right into my hand.
They are amazing little creatures, and endlessly fascinating.
Crabs can be just like little kids sometimes. I just had to intervene in a shell dispute. Two little ones each had a claw hooked into an empty shell and were tugging at it,wanting it all to himself. After watching this a bit and realizing it was a stalemate, I separated them from the shell and took it out of the tank. The two little crabs scuttled off to a corner, but as soon as I put the empty shell back in, one of them came out and slyly grabbed it.
Funny to see such little creatures with human emotions.
