I passed my check ride this morning. I'm now a private pilot.
I got a little distracted toward the end of my training. October is always my busiest work month. I was trying to finish the training up in September, which didn't happen. As a result I didn't fly in October. It took me the first couple of weeks in November to recap what I needed to touch up on.
Anyway, it's done. I'm licensed.
There's still quite a bit more training I'd like to complete. At the minimum:
- An aerobatic rating (so I can do spins, flips, and barrel rolls)
- A tail dragger endorsement (for planes with a tail wheel)
- A complex aircraft endorsement (for planes with landing gear)
- A high performance aircraft endorsement (for planes with bigger engines)
- An instrument rating (to be able to fly into clouds)
I may or may not work toward a commercial rating. I haven't decided yet. I also haven't decided as to whether or not I want to learn twin engine aircraft.
In any event, my training is on hold until after the new year. I want to buy my own airplane, and that's going to cost me about $25k. I hope to buy one around March. We'll see how it goes.
With my own plane, some of the training (like instrument rating) gets a lot cheaper ($3,000 - $5,000 cheaper).
Right now it costs me $105 per hour to rent a plane.

Try the old Glenn Ford movie called Gallant Journey, anybody who loves aviation will enjoy the film. The ending is just a bit of a let down.

I did buy a plane in 2013, a piper Cherokee 140. I operated it for 2 years and then sold it in 2015. I was about to move and taking the plane with me, well.. it just wasn't an option.
I haven't flown in 3 years. I'd like to get back into it some day. But even if I don't, I had some great experiences. I made a few cross country flights and numerous weekend trips to California, Arizona, etc.
