Hero Essay

In my english/literature class, we were assigned to do a 5 paragraph essay on our hero. I chose Audrey Hepburn. Below is the essay.

Audrey Hepburn once said “Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, it’s at the end of your arm. As you get older, remember you have another hand: the first is to help yourself, the second is to help others.” Heroes come from all walks of life. Many people have different views or images of heroes. Police officers, firefighters, military personnel, doctors, and nurses are all heroes. Even humanitarians are heroes.

A hero is someone who puts others needs before their own. They should help others when they need it before they do something for themselves. They should have a caring and nurturing personality. A hero should care about others more than they care about themselves. They should value the lives of others more than their own life. Doing deeds for the good of the human race and not for what they get out of it in return.

My hero is Audrey Hepburn. When Audrey was 16, she was a volunteer nurse at a Dutch hospital during World War II. It was also during this time that her parents had to change her first name to hide her English roots. She experienced true hardship, having to resort to eating tulip bulbs just to survive. She worked with the Dutch underground giving ballet performances to collect donations for the anti-Nazi efforts. Later in her life, she did work for UNICEF. Miss Hepburn donated the salaries from her last three projects to UNICEF. Her last humanitarian mission for UNICEF was to Somalia.

Audrey Hepburn has taught me that the well-being of others is of extreme importance. The people who live on two dollars or less a day and the people that have no food or water outnumber those who have a good salary and can have food. She has taught me to try and help those people the most. She is an inspiration to me because she helped people during the Second World War and continued to help people for the rest of her life. She did not do charity work because it would make her look good; she did charity work because she wanted to help people who were less fortunate.

Always put others before yourself, because, without other people, who would we be? If you see someone who needs help, with even the smallest thing, help them. If anything seems impossible, remember the word itself says ‘I’m possible.’ Be a kind and caring person to everyone around you. Audrey Hepburn believed that if someone needed help, anyone at all, they could get it. There are so many people in this world that need help, so help them.
