Smoke Talk

Times Read: 877

“Look, a metacrawler searches the web for a word you’re looking for utilising a series of tags to help place that word in context..”

His friend looked at him, obviously puzzled.

“Simply put..” he carried on.

“Yes please..” His friend interrupted, to what appeared to be a general of real scorn.

“Well look at self-awareness in the same way,” his exasperated friend explained slowly, albeit not too patiently.

His friend’s look of complete incomprehension displayed his response to the answer that he’d been given.

A resigned sigh followed and, another can was sought, as the pipe was refilled.

"It was just the …"

00:05 Oct 29 2009
Times Read: 885

“...it was just the ‘waccy ‘baccy, wasn’t it? That shouldn’t affect you getting a job, should it?” Gary, station staff asks me, as he brushes up a pile of leaves.

I know he’s being well meaning, so I stand and, listen.

“.. yeah,” I nod, having heard the question before, “you’re right. But because of the nature of the work that I do; working with people, I have to make declaration.”

And, I smile with understanding, as I add, “ And, as soon as I do, I’m able to see an employers face turn grey.”

And as I walk away slowly, I tell him as an afterthought, “Happens every time. Heck all I did was sell a weed. Seems, my sentence will never end.”

Then as I leave the footbridge and make my way down the steps, I hear Gary call after me, “Good luck with the interview!”

Fringe S02-E05

00:47 Oct 22 2009
Times Read: 910

“Don’t worry Peter, I promise to wear my shorts; so that if you bring young ladies home, there won’t be any embarrassment.”

Walter.

**

“So, do you do this sort of thing often?”

Agent Cashner.

“Brains? No. But, Walter gets particularly excited when we do.”

Astrid.

**

“The Thalamus? What relevance is it?”

Astrid.

“It’s the part of the brain that regulates sleep.”

Walter.

**

“I can. The bio-chip plugs directly into the Thalamus, which not only regulates sleep, it also acts as a relay tower to the main cortex, which also controls motor function.”

Peter.

“Well, if I had a live subject.. ?”

Walter.

“Walter, no. No student volunteers…”

Peter.

“Walter, say it. Say ‘no students.’”

Peter.

[Pause]

Walter looks to Agent Cashner, who has walked in with their previously lost luggage.

**

“Look for the phrase..”

Sam Weiss, Bowling-alley Man.

“What phrase? What am I looking for?”

Olivia.

“Whatever it is you need to hear. You’ll figure it out.”

**

“Walter, what’s wrong with Agent Cashner?”

Astrid.

“I drugged him?”

Walter.

“Walter, don’t tell me you put that chip in his head?”

Astrid.

**

“Walter, I do not think this is such a good idea.”

Astrid.

“Don’t be such a Grinch.. I told you, science should be fun.”

Walter.

**

“Walter, what is it?”

Astrid.

“Either a green unicorn crossed the lab, or I accidentally took some L.S.D.”

Walter.

“That’s not Mescalin. It’s something else entirely..”

Walter.

“..it’s not the drugs at all! I think I have an idea what it is.”

**

“So it’s not mind control?”

Peter.

“No Peter, your theory was wrong. Doctor Nyaks chips aren’t receiving commands. They’re transmitting massive amounts of data..”

Walter.

“Walter. The chips are meant to transmit data. That’s their function: to monitor sleep cycles..”

Peter.

“The chips aren’t simply monitoring sleep. They’re accessing sensory information that passes through the Thalamus; every colour sound and picture, while we sleep..”

Walter.

“Walter, are you saying Doctor Nayaks chips are stealing dreams.”

Peter.

“That’s right. What’s more, I believe the chips have the ability to turn on a dream-like state, whilst the patient is awake; which would lead to paranoia, hallucinations and, a complete inability to differentiate between reality and dreams. The very behaviour we’ve been witnessing..”

Walter.

“Walter, why would anybody want to access another persons dreams?”

Peter.

“The rush Peter. Think of your most pleasant dream, multiply that feeling ten-fold, all mainlining through your cortex in a few seconds. It’s.. really quite something.”

Walter.

“Walter, are you saying we’re dealing with an addict?”

Olivia.

“Not just an addict dear. In my estimation, that man; the man that came into contact with this drug would become enslaved by it.”

Walter.

**

“Peter, he’s still plugged in..”

Olivia.

“I’m going to try to turn it off..”

Peter.

“Peter, can you turn it off?”

Olivia.

“Peter, stand back..”

Olivia.

[BANG, BANG]

**

“I don’t think he was fully aware of what his darker side was up to.”

Peter.

“His addiction to dreams became his nightmare, one he couldn’t wake up from.”

Peter.

Berating anything modern

18:29 Oct 20 2009
Times Read: 915

Berating anything modern, as he cleaned the oven, my Father switched from motoring and engines, to the cleaning product he had just been using.

As I put my coffee on the tray, he continued speaking as he read what it said on the back of the product, “Cleans, harmless and works. Well, it doesn’t clean, harmless and doesn’t work..” I thought it time to leave the kitchen. He’s too often right.

Interference.

00:33 Oct 19 2009
Times Read: 919

I went through the living-room, to goto the kitchen to make a coffee, to enjoy with one of the shows that Karl had recorded for me.

As I went through, I paused by my Mother, who was watching the television.

“Do you want me to turn this off,” I asked, “there’s interference onnit.”

She looked at me puzzled and I just grinned.

“The interference, its ‘Emma.’” I had added.

Now she really had looked puzzled.

“It’s all about a rich girl, who meddles in the lives of other’s. Do you want me to turn it off for you?” I finished, with a smile.

“No, no, there’s nothing else on anyway,” she added hastily, before I finished going through to the kitchen, to make my coffee.

.. fateful words.

14:07 Oct 15 2009
Times Read: 930

AAAAAAAAAAAnd, why do people do as they do?

It's piss-poor that people criticise others, then act like those that they criticise; and then seem to feel affronted when you expect them to be as they have purported to be; which isn't, or shouldn’t, be too much to ask of someone, I believe.

Yet, day after day, online and realtime, you [or should that be I?] meet those who fit that general description; those who do as I have described; and rarely do they ever see the wrong that they have done; because [in the case of at least one person I know] Prozac and their counsellor, told them to do as they felt right for them.

Just wouldn't it be great [he screeches] if we all did as they do, going round with this freedom, to do whatever we want, irrespective of what we have said to others, or even, what we might have told ourselves??

And, maybe I'm going over-the-top, as I'm told that I do; but I thought [naively??] that a relationship, any relationship, should be based on honesty? And, that would mean online, perhaps just one profile and then perhaps realtime, not saying to someone those fateful words, "rust me, I'm not like all the others."

Self-Empowerment 101

18:14 Oct 06 2009
Times Read: 951

‘The pen is mightier than the sword,’ and ‘just imagine the power of one word’?

Or perhaps … even a phrase?

I was walking down Allport road coming from Mikes, and the greens of the leaves have changed and the others are kinda golden, under foot; or floating down gently, to rest upon your hand.

And, I got thinking of self-empowerment, the way you do...

Then I thought, ‘I have an answer,’ which works, for me. So, I’ll share.

[No explosion, from HIM.[

“I beat to a different drum.” Try saying it & knowing what it means.

It’s someone that I learnt.

It’s interesting.
