Think, god damn it, think....

I arrived to the party late, as usual. I did not want to be out to begin with but my girl was invited to a very “exclusive” party with a crowd that I did not know, and I certainly was not letting her go alone. Exclusive is often code for no one goes with you and no one knows where you are. The directions she had given me took me about an hour away from home and a good 20 minutes away from any town at all. I pulled off the last thing that could be considered a street and drove into the bush.

As I pulled up to the house two things occurred to me. One, this house was seriously out of place. Though old Victorian architecture was not unheard of here on the Island, it was the gothic tone that rang wrong. The gargoyles at the gate, that I had wanted to brush off as cheesy, had left a chill on my skin that did not leave as I parked my car in full circle driveway. This was a far cry from the cookie cutter condo buildings that had been springing up everywhere. Two, I was certain that as I pulled up the driveway someone had become “aware” of my presence and I of theirs. I sat in my car for a moment contemplating just turning around and leaving. I prided myself on not being the girl in the movie that dies in the driveway while looking for the missing axe. I promised myself that I was going to get my girl and get the hell out of there.

I got out of the car and walked toward the house. As I neared the front porch I could hear music and laughter from inside. As I glanced through the front window I could see many people talking and laughing in the front room. I began to scold myself for an over active imagination.

“Well, what were you expecting to see, Asshole? Some scene from Bordello of Blood? For Christ sake… Get a grip.”

I knocked on the front door and was welcome with a “Come In” from many voices. I opened the door to an enormous entry chamber with a staircase in the dead center. The stairway was roped off and split just before the top to reach off to the sides instead of going to the top. The ceiling was vaulted to what I guessed to be the roof and the stairs lead on to wide ledges with a few doorways on each side. All the lights were out on the landings except for in the doorway that looked directly at the door. As my eyes followed the stairway to the second floor I glanced toward the light. Silhouetted in the doorway were a few figures obviously watching the scene below. One in particular caught my attention. Large framed, tall, obviously male. I could not shake the feeling that this was the person I had become aware of as I came down the driveway. My concentration was broken by my name being called out of the crowd. I looked to see my girl waving in the front room. I closed the door and headed in.

Upon reaching my friend I was given a drink and many introductions to the faces she stood talking with, I only recognized one vaguely from our work. He was a regular visitor to our bar, young and wealthy, it was no wonder she had accepted the invitation. I made a mental note to smack her on our way home. Many names were handed to me that became lost the moment they left the lips of the owner. I was never good with names anyway. I leaned in and asked my friend who had invited her here. She quickly told me that a friend of the rich boy she referred to as Jordan had invited “us” here. After a few minutes of courtesy conversation I excused myself from the circle to take a look around.

‘Oh God, where am I?”

Memories of the night before raced through my mind. Patchy, fuzzy, incoherent little splashes.

“I surely didn’t drink that much.”

As my vision begins to clear I searches for a reference point in the room, to no avail. I do not know this place.

“What am I bound to?!?! Think, god damn it. Think.”
