With the success of the original two Ravenloft modules in First Edition AD&D, TSR decided to expand on the idea for Second Edition AD&D. Ravenloft became its own campaign world (published alongside Grayhawk, Forgotten Realms, Dark Sun, Dragonlance, and others), but Ravenloft unique facet was the focus on gothic horror. It represented a pocket dimension where particularly ruthless dark powers are imprisoned in their own domains. This has the effect of not allowing them to wreak havoc on the world at large, but that fact is little consolation to the mortals and heroes trapped within the domains of these evil powers.
The setting is notable for drawing directly from Gothic and horror literature (and even the real world on occasion) to populate it's world. The vampire lords Count Strahd von Zarovich and Vlad Drakov fall into the Dracula and Vlad Tepes roles. Doctor Victor Mordenheim and his creation, Adam are obviously inspired from Shelley’s novel Frankenstien, and so forth.
The setting is out of print, but readily available at used book stores and many modules and other publications are available for download from the Wizards of the Coast Website.
