Shot in Vancouver, Vampire is a USA/Canada co-production and Iwai’s first English-language film. The eponymous vampire in the film is Simon Wade (Kevin Zegers), a nerdy, bespectacled biology teacher with a thirst for blood. But unlike other screen vampires, Wade doesn’t gnaw on the necks of his female victims. Instead, he goes to suicide websites and gets their consent to have their blood drained, which he then drinks out of the bottle. In the process, we hear the stories of several of these women and explore some of their reasons for wanting to die.
As he did with Love Letter, Iwai does not so much flip the dialectic between vampire and victim as collapse them together. In this interview, the director reveals that he didn’t want to make a film about vampires inasmuch as he wanted to make a film about perpetrator and victim ‘where they actually don’t hate each other’. As a result, the film’s meditative pace deliberately plays against genre expectations, and in focusing on death, has much more to say about life.
