When "Dance of the Vampires" opened on Broadway in 2002, it was fashionable to call it one of the worst musicals of all time. Such lofty claims were misguided. If the show didn't work, it was because this spoof of "Dracula" and vampire movies just wasn't funny enough. Its greatest fault was that it missed "wildly hilarious" and landed somewhere around "mildly amusing." Composer Jim Steinman also disapproved of the Broadway show, preferring his original version-- represented here in the 1998 German language 2-disc set "Tanz Der Vampire."
