Vampyres Only: The First Vampire Website:
VO launched in September, 1994, and was created to showcase my love of the bloodsucking undead–which back then was primarily limited to Anne Rice’s novels, and Hammer horror films. Digital content of, well, practically anything was hard to come by, but after a thorough search of other (scant) horror websites, anonymous FTP sites & dial-up bulletin boards (anyone remember those?), I was able to cull together enough pictures and text to launch Vampyres Only. To this I added my own work written in Notepad, with images created in MS Paint! I had also been an active member of the VAMPYRES mailing list, which was an email-based discussion list on Vampyric Lore, Fact, and Fiction that had been running since the early 1990s. Several years later, I obtained approval to host the List’s archives, and many of VO’s articles were gleaned from those files (which date back over twenty years). Another major section, the News Archive, is a historical collection of news reports primarily from the late 1990s through to the late 2000s. In addition to this, I’ve created an extensive database of vampire comics and movies.
Maintaining a website over the course of many years meant updating the look as technology changed, but also to avoid becoming extremely bored with it! For those of you who have been around since 1994, there have been several different looks. I unfortunately don’t recall all of them, but thanks to a few screen shots that appeared in magazines over the years, plus some captures housed at The Wayback Machine and a few old files I still had on my hard drive, I was able to reconstruct some incarnations.
