This rather fangtastic idea was submitted by Jenn S. to a San Diego News Channel for a Hallowe'en segment they were doing. There were many inquiries as to how the blood dripping effect was created and so Jenn decided to post the recipe on the internet. I found her recipe at www.hostessblog.com.
This rim-of-blood effect on the martini glass is actually very similar to the kind of mixture as one would use to make hard candy. You will need one of those candy thermometers and if you don't have one, you can pick one up from your local grocery store, especially if it is a larger chain.
Ingredients:
1 cup Sugar
1/2 cup Karo Syrup
1/2 cup Water
Red Food Colouring
Cinnamon (for zest, but is optional)
Directions:
Combine the sugar, syrup and water.
Cook without stirring to hard crack stage - which is 300°F (150°C).
Add food colouring - needs to look like blood.
(Add the optional Cinnamon)
Turn off heat (or reduce heat for many glasses)
While the mixture is still hot, dunk the top of the cocktail glass into the mixture to create the red rim. If you need to do several glasses, keep the mixture hot so it lasts longer.
You can go anywhere from just along the very tip of the rim to part way down the glass - it's really your preference. Flip the glass right side up to cool. As the thick consistency of the candy thickens, parts of it will drip and cause 'drips' which look almost like blood!
Great for Hallowe'en parties.
