The Meeting - part 1

The digital clock on the dash board of the suv read 9:34 pm as Serina pulled her curvy black Dodge Durango into a small gravel parking area along side of county Rt 4, on the out skirts of town. She saw lights in her rear view mirror and waited a few moments to make sure it was the company van pulling up behind her, then satisfied that her friends had been able to follow her directions and arrive on time, she turned off the stereo and pulled the keys from the ignition. She pulled her long blonde hair up into a pony tail and secured it with a scrunchi, then grabbed her back pack off the passenger seat, and opened the truck door, sliding out in a quick graceful motion.

Shanti and Reese were already out of the big white van and moving around to the side door to unload their packs as well. All of them wore nearly the same out fit, black company T-shirts she had made for them and jeans. The usual comfortable attire for hunting. Serina always looked very feminine no matter what she wore. She stood 5'6, with blue eyes, and a small slender, but curvy frame. Her make up and dressing style always gave her a distinct gothic look. Reese was about 6 ft , with long brown hair and brown eyes. He was a metal head and a goth, and had been with Serina for two years now as her case manager. Shanti was the newest member. She stood 5'5, and was slender. She tried at the goth look but wasnt able to pull it off as easily as the others. She had started dating Reese about 6 months ago and had eventually just worked her way into the group. Now, the three made up Serinas main team.

She walked over to them and set her pack on the ground next to the front tire. "Well this is the place, Clearmans Cemetary. What do you think"?

Reese cocked his head and peered over the side of the van as if inspecting the quiet place. "Its dark. Its empty. Its way out in the middle of no where. And its a cemetary."

"Geez Reese", Shanti giggled, "your powers of observation are amazing"!

He set his pack down and began fumbling inside for his camera. "Im just saying it looks like every other cemetary we have ever been to. People always think these places are creepy but its usually just their mind playing tricks on them. We come out, investigate, and go back to tell them that we found nothing of interest. Id rather stick to the historical and established haunts myself".

"This place is historical according to the research I have managed to collect so far" Serina said. "I didnt have much time to look into it though so I dont have a full back ground yet".

Shanti finished setting up her equiptment and zipped her pack back up. "We dont always come up with nothing. We have been to a few grave yards and found some pretty nasty spirits if you recall Reese." She double checked her thermal recorder, made a few screen adjustments, then decided she was ready to go.

Reese glanced up at Serina with an odd look. "Im sorry. I just have some things on my mind tonight. I dont mean to seem so dispirited. So what is the story here again"?

Serina wondered at what might be bothering him. He had seemed very distracted and a bit cold latley, but she decided it would be best to wait until later to ask about it.

"The old couple who own this land have a night man who comes out here and checks on things" Serina said as she ajusted her flash light, "He has made some strange reports back to them about a dark figure in the cemetary this last month late at night. Weird noises. And says he feels the presence of something very bad. He claims he has seen strange black mists around certain areas, and told them he was too afraid to work out here at night any more. More so, he has started a rumor around the union that the place is haunted by an evil spirit so they are having trouble hiring any one else".

"So", Reese concluded, "They called us to come check it out so they can give a good report to the next worker they try to hire".

"Exactly, so you and Shanti collect as much on film as you can and Ill do the evp sweep. I dont expect to find any thing so this should be an in and out investigation. We will go back, review all the evidence, then give them a clean slate and make them all feel better... case closed".

Shanti slammed the door shut on the van and turned to face them, "All set, lets hunt some ghosts"!

The three investigators made their way through the cemetary gate and onto a brick path way. As they walked Reese took various pictures, the camera flash lighting up the dark gloom of the dead place. Shanti recorded their process with her thermal camera, making comments here and there about points of interest. It was a large cemetary by city standards, but it was spaced out in fairly neat rows that were easy to follow. The cemetary was framed in with dense tree's and woodland on the back and sides adding to its atmosphere of seclusion and the high black rod iron fence topped with spikes gave it an ominous look. This far from town, there were no sounds from traffic or industry to bring some reality into the scene as they explored. Serina could easily understand an older man getting disoriented and paranoid out here at night alone but her inner sences as a clairvoyant didnt pick up any thing unusal.

They walked the paths back and forth for the better part of an hour. The grounds were not well maintained and they had to watch their step, as the brick in the paths was cracked here and there, jutting upwards in some areas where weeds and tree roots had popped through and could trip them very easily in the darkness. Most of the stones were in one peice, but very dirty and covered in a thick crust of mud or moss. Chips were missing from their structures as if time worn from heat and weather. As they walked they looked upon some of the stones, making notes of dates and some of the names, trying to get some idea how old this cemetary really was. Some of the marking dated back to the 1600s.

As they reached the last row at the back of the cemetary Reese set his pack down and began disassembling his camera for the night. "I told you nothing was here. No mists, no ghosts, no demons, and good thing too because my camera battery just went dead".

Shanti followed his lead and began to pack up her gear as well, ready to call it a night.

Serina turned to them about to agree with the statement Reese had made, when a sudden feeling came over her that she had not experianced before. The words froze in her mouth, but the others didnt seem to notice her discomfort as they continued to tear down and pack their equiptment, casually talking amongst them selves. She turned slowly and panned her eye sight across the back wall of trees. Directly in front of her now, she could see a small path leading into the tree line paved with old stone. She felt herself being pulled in that direction, very strongly, and she began to walk to it leaving her friends behind.

The path was short and came out into a small grove with a two single grave stones side by side. She could still distantly hear Shanti and Reese talking to each other, so she wasnt to worried about being in any danger. She approached the area slowly, noticing now that these head stones looked brand new. The name inscribed on the first read "Edmond C. Maringer"

and the second was "Bethany K. Maringer". The odd thing was that niether stone had any dates on them, just the names.

As she stepped closer she saw that one stone, the mans, had a small inscription but it seemed to be written in another language that she did not recognize. Drawn to this stone with incredible curiosity, she knelt down upon the damp earth and reached out to place her hand upon the inscription.

A low deep voice from behind her stopped her hand halfway to its destination "It is german".

She turned quickly and saw the out line of a man in the tree line. She couldnt make out any features from the distance but his eyes seemed to shine at her like a predator in the dark.

"What did you say"?

"The inscription", he said softly this time. "That is what you were looking at , yes? It is written in german'.

Serina stood up quickly and almost lost her balance. She realised she couldnt hear her friends any more and wondered if they had gone back to the van with out her, leaving her here alone with this stranger.

"Who are you... what are you doing here" she tryed to keep the nervousness from her voice.

He strode out from the tree line with the confidence of an aristrocrat and her eyes looked upon the most handsome man she had ever seen in her life. Long black silky hair draped across his shoulders and down his back, a young boyish smiling face with regal features and perfect lips, strong and lean. About 6'1 she would guess. He was garbed entirely in black in a very modern gothic rock star fashion. Long black trench coat with strappings laced up the back, black net shirt, black leather pants and black goth style boots. She guessed him to be about 30, her age.

"I am so sorry" he said reaching a hand out to her. She noticed he wore many silver rings and his nails were even painted black. "I didnt mean to startle or scare you. My name is Chance. Chance Maringer. These are my grand parents graves and I come out here some nights to think and be alone. makes me feel a bit closer to them I suppose."

She noticed for the first time that his voice was heavily accented. She gathered her wits for a moment and tryed to recompose herself. She felt silly for reacting the way she had. What was she expecting.. a demon materialized in the flesh?? She guessed now that this place really did make a person paraniod.

She took his hand in a gentle shake and his fingers lingered on hers. She felt a heat go through her at their touch and looked into his face. He was smiling warmly. Nothing at all to have been afraid of. She knew now what she was feeling was pure attraction not her sixth sence.

"My name is Serina. I am a paranormal investigator just here checking out the area for the owners." She wanted to say more but her mind had seemed to go blank in his gaze.

"A paranormal investigator. Very interesting." He winked at her and released her hand turning toward the head stones. "And does there seem to be any thing you would call paranormal out and about tonight"??

She couldnt help but giggle at his playful jibe. "Only you I fear. Havent found much else".

"And you would classify me as above the normal"? He questioned.

Feeling bolder now she gave him a sexy smile, "Absolutely! I havent seen any one like you around here before".

"And is that a good thing"?

She blushed and tryed to keep from lowering her eyes. "Its a very good thing".

"Well then", he turned back to her and closed the distance between them. "I am glad you found me then".

"Where are you from? thats definatly not a native accent."

"I came here from Germany a month ago when I recieved word that my grand parents had passed away. I have taken over their home nearby for my stay here."

"And do you plan to stay long"?

"Maybe. I have not yet decided but the time away is doing me well so far. I see now that I may have found another reason to enjoy some time here".

She was a bit shocked by his direct comment but decided not to jump to conclusions. It was just a comment, he hadnt asked her out. And what was she thinking any way? Standing alone in a grave yard with some guy she didnt even know, thinking about such things? She was acting like a love sick school girl, not a strong independent professional woman. Sure he was the sexiest man she had ever dreamed of but what did she know about him?

Suddenly he reached up and gently pulled her face to his, placing his lips confidently on hers, and her response shocked her. He smelled so good and his touch sent waves of pleasure through every nerve in her body. She unashamedly returned his kiss, opening her mouth for him in submission as his tongue explored her. As quickly as it had started it ended and he had pulled calmly away with a devious smile.

"Wow" she smiled.

"Im afraid I cant stay any longer tonight but I will be seeing you again, that I promise. I look forward to getting to know you better". He started to walk back toward the tree line where she had first seen him, his trench coat swaying along the ground behind him.

"But wait", she started toward him then caught herself and stopped. "How? How will I know how to find you"?

He turned and gave her that sexy smile again. "You wont need to. I will find you". He held up what looked like her business card. Confused, she remembered that she had put a few in the back pocket of her jeans before she had left the office earlier.

A loud noise distracted her and she turned to see Shanti and Reese crash through the entrance of he pathway.

"Dear God Serina", Reese yelled, stopping to catch his breath as Shanti continued over to her and hugged her tightly. "You scared the hell out of us. One minute you were beside us, then you were just gone!"

"Im sorry, I noticed this path way and just decided to check it out. I didnt really think I would get too far away to worry about telling you guys".

"You have been gone over half an hour", Shanti said releasing her and stepping back. "What on earth were you doing"?

"Talking to him", Serina turned to point to Chance but he was gone, no sign existed that he had ever been there.

"Talking to who", Reese questioned looking around. "Did you sence something? Is there spirit here"?

"No.. no. There was a man here. His name is Chance. He said these were his grand parents graves. You guys must have just missed him"!

Shanti looked at her strangly.. "A man out here"?

"Yes. I swear. And you wouldnt have believed it if you'd have seen him Shanti. This guy was incredible"!

Reese puffed him self up a bit and turned away. "What kind of a guy hangs out in grave yards late at night"?

Shanti laughed.. "Well.. your here arent you"?

Ignoring her jibe, he started down the path again. "Lets get the hell out of here. All of a sudden I dont like this place much".

Serina looked to the tree line a last time in the direction Chance had disappeared and touched her fingers to her lips remembering his kiss, then turned and walked with Shanti, following Reese back out of the cemetary to end this unusal night. She wondered to herself as they walked along, would she ever see the man again?
