If you live forever, choosing the roight comapny is paramount.
I run a small production company for interactive live shows. Our first and current project is a story centering around a vampire and her two ghouls, ans exploring their relationship, especially the topic of vampirism and self-determination.
In most vampire stories, to be turned, you have to give up control, but with ours, it's a little different: You have to take action yourself, so if you turn, you take full responsibility.
I have always been skeptical about the portrayal of vampires as godlike creatures. I am more interested in the question: How does your worldview change when you have all the time in the world? Does it make you more or less compassionate? What about skill and practice? Since you live forever, you could practically get good at anything.
As for films and media, I really like the take of "Let the Right One in" (Have only seen the Swedish version, not read the book or seen the American remake) because it explores the psyche of the vampire, without playing down her detachment and brutality, but still showing how she feels and what her motivations are.
