It has to be said, I am far more of a fan of The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy in it's Television appearance, than it's Big Screen counterpart. The small screen adaptation, though Dependant on 1980's technology is storyline wise more witty than the polished Hollywood version. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the movie version, but it just lacked the charm of the television series. Albeit the effects of the day were ropy, but lack of cg caused the makers to be more visually creative. One thing I did like about the big screen version was Alan Rickman as Marvin The Paranoid Android. He is one of my favorite all time characters in science fiction. This misanthropic, intellectual depressive that I relate to at times. It's writer Douglas Adams is very gifted at reflected our varied oddities as a human species into a sci fi world. He takes mundane situations such as a Demolition of property to make a Bypass into social commentary. His use of pathos, wit, wisdom and human curiosity lead to this being an inventive world that many a reader adored.

The Hitchhiker;'s Guide to The Galaxy has made an appearance in various formats: Radio,Television, Books, Audio Books, Film and E-Books.

Marvin The Paranoid Android has the misfortune of being an intellect surrounded by lesser minds. He has some of the best lines in the book/ film/ radio show/ movie.

''You think you've got problems. What are you supposed to do if you are a manically depressed robot? No, don't even bother answering. I'm 50,000 times more intelligent than you and even I don't know the answer.''

''Genuine People Personalities. I'm a personality prototype. You can tell, can't you...?''

''Here I am, brain the size of a planet, and they ask me to take you to the bridge. Call that job satisfaction, 'cause I don't.''

"Reverse primary thrust, Marvin." That's what they say to me. "Open airlock number 3, Marvin." "Marvin, can you pick up that piece of paper?" Here I am, brain the size of a planet, and they ask me to pick up a piece of paper.''

''Do you want me to sit in a corner and rust or just fall apart where I'm standing?''

''Sorry, did I say something wrong? Pardon me for breathing which I never do anyway so I don't know why I bother to say it oh God I'm so depressed.

''The first ten million years were the worst. And the second ten million... they were the worst too. The third ten million I didn't enjoy at all. After that, I went into a bit of a decline.''

Marvin is easily the most memorable character in the Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy franchise. You really feel his frustration at times, because most smart people relate to this. He was a Android specifically designed with a personality. It was a marketing tool to engage the buyer. Unfortunately Marvin was a prototype and this lead to him being designed with a less commercial friendly persona. Poor Marvin is therefore stuck as an outsider within his workplace. Metaphor is used here to reflect the outcast; Him being a Android is simply a fantastical way of presenting his archetype.
