Interconnected Individuality
emotion and experience in imagery
With my photography, I capture images that evoke emotions I've felt, the essence of places I've been, and those moments that can't be explained, but must simply be experienced, for I believe that personal experience is the one truly wise counselor in life.
Much of my work focuses on the interplay of natural forms and of architecture, sometimes mixed, but more often individually, reminding me of the interconnectedness of all things. I want my art to provoke thought and evoke emotion.
Because a work of art does not aim at reproducing natural appearances, it is not, therefore, an escape from life...but an expression of the significance of life, a stimulation to greater effort in living.
—Henry Moore
I got a piece chosen for an exhibition for the first time ever last February. I've been using this space to develop my skills and display what I feel are some of the "keeper" shots. These shots are primarily things I've spotted in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota.
I only have 20 slots to work with, so I only put up what I consider to be the current best of the best. I've put a lot of thought into choosing, cropping, and editing shots, and a bit of time into telling a little about the photos I've included.
How I Rate Portfolios
I rate portfolios based on what I know of photography and design, and I use the whole scale. If I didn't comment, check below--one of these issues is likely the reason.
If you have copyrighted material in your portfolio that isn't your work, regardless of whether it's in the description or is an image in the portfolio, you will get a 1.
I don't mind if you feature one or two favorites, but having a ton of large pictures in the description will get you a lower rating--if you're just too lazy to resize them all, that's not my fault. If you have a lot of large photos to show, put a smaller version in the portfolio and a link to a full-size version (say, at photobucket or deviantART) in the description for that picture--it's not that difficult.
The portfolio description isn't a second profile to be filled up with pictures and quizzes. It's a place to tell a little bit about your artistic leanings and inspirations...and maybe about the other things in your profile that are important to you, like the photos of your family.
I don't expect to see photos of you, necessarily, though one or two would be nice. I would prefer not to see a portfolio that only contains photos of you and only you. I don't want to see 50 of anything, including family photos, your pets, flowers, architecture shots, landscapes, fashion shots, cemeteries, snow, sunsets... you get the idea. Mix it up a little and pick a handful that you feel are the best of that genre that you can offer.
And speaking of picking the best you can offer, just because you have 20 or 200 slots doesn't mean you have to use them all! I'd rather see a dozen great ones than 50 shots with only those same dozen good ones... So what's different about your portfolio--how do you make it stand out from the crowd?
