The pentacle is a very misunderstood image and has been confused with evil, and the worship of Satan for centuries. It's an important symbol in the Wiccan faith. Neither this symbol nor the Wiccan faith have anything to do with the worship of Satan. In fact the Wiccan religion completely lacks the presence of a supreme evil entity. Also known as the Star of Isis, the pentacle has been interpreted to have many different meanings. Some people believe that its five points represent the five senses, the hand, and even the human body. I think the most common belief is that it symbolizes the five elements; earth, air, fire, water, and light. In modern times, the term "Spirit" has replaced "light", however it's pretty much the same concept. The circle around the star is said to represent the Goddess and bring protection to whatever or whom ever this symbol adorns. Some people believe that it is a symbol of the Goddess Kore; her sacred fruit was/is the apple and when cut in half the apple's seeds appear to be arranged in the shape of the pentacle. Others argue that it represents the Goddess Morgan. Another common belief suggests that these two are in fact just examples of the many different aspects of the Goddess. The pentacle is usually a point of focus and grounding. During rituals it is often traced in the air using a ceremonial tool, or finger. This symbol has two primary functions, usually depending on how it is drawn. It can either be used for invoking or banishing. If your purpose is protection, then you should start drawing the pentacle from it's top most point. If your purpose is cleansing then you should start drawing the pentacle at it's bottom left point. The pentacle is also used as a symbol by most wiccans to show their strong devotion to their religion. It is usually worn as a pendant from a chain, or incorporated into other forms of jewelry. 1.
