Alternative Modeling In the past few years there has been a surge in alternative models hitting the scene. From Jeffree Star to the Suicide Girls, they are taking over the modeling world. This style of modeling pushes the gothic subculture more into the mainstream. Many view it as a bad wave, but others see it as a revolution. What most people don't realize is that within this style of modeling there are different scenes. There is the e-scene, bondage/fetish, cosplay, and alternative runway modeling. Let's start off with a look at alternative runway modeling. Alternative models tend to model clothing that is geared toward the gothic subculture. They are commonly found with darker hair and in all shapes and sizes. Many of the females are bigger than the typical model and the males are smaller. These models also do a lot of print work as well. They are what you would typically see in a Hot Topic advertisement. Here is what a typical alternative model looks like. Cosplayers typically dress up as characters from popular animes or comics. They also have to have the ability to act like whoever they are cosplaying as. Popular characters that are portrayed are Harley Quinn, Sailor Moon, and Naruto. Here is a professional cosplayer dressed as Samus Aran from the Metroid series. Models in this scene usually are active members of the BDSM lifestyle themselves and start out modeling for fun and progress to bigger things. Many famous bondage models include Claire Adams and Betty Page. The Suicide Girls are also classified in this scene. It is based solely on websites such as myspace and vampirefreaks. These models only shoot for their profiles on sites like that. Some progress to bigger things, but it is very rare. Many famous e-scene models include Jeffree Star and Gregory Von James. Here is a picture of Jeffree Star.
