Night Vision

“Ah, now there’s that sense of humor that I am so fond of. Yes that will do. Now, if you will allow me, it is time to get serious.” Cornelius walked across the room and over to the candle ledge. One by one, he blew them out, all except for one. He carried the last remaining candle over to the table, where he picked up his cell phone.

“Please be careful with this, although I won’t be using it, it still has quite a bit of sentimental value to me.”

“What? I don’t understand.” asked Rita as Cornelius blew out the candle. The cellar went pitch black and the two stood there quietly for a moment. Then Cornelius tossed the phone underhanded across the room directly at Rita.

“Hey, what the hell are you doing?” yelled Rita. First, there was a scraping sound and then a flash of light. Cornelius had lit a match, re-lit the candle and set it back on the ledge. He slowly turned around to look at Rita who was holding the cell phone with two hands.

“I don’t believe it. I can’t believe I did that.”

“If I had asked you to do that, you might not have. But by forcing you to do it, your instincts took over.”

“Wow, I can see in the dark. Cornelius, what else can I do?” Rita asked. She was becoming excited.

“There should’ve been something else, more than just seeing that phone coming towards you in the darkness. Rita, you are a superior creature. Your vision, your sense of smell, your reflexes, all of your senses have been elevated to superhuman levels, but even beyond that you must rely on what you feel. You should have the ability to sense things about you, feel them around you. Tell me, did you feel the device coming towards you or did you just see it coming?”

“I don’t know, I’m still surprised I was able to catch it all.”

Vampyre 2000 on TV

02:21 Jan 16 2012
Times Read: 384

I spoke to producer in New York today. He is very xcited about the details of the story, the underlying themes and the infinite possibilities of a project. I think he may be leaning toward TV vs film because of the many directions we could go with this story. I'll know more soon as we will be speaking again within the next couple of weeks. The main reason the Producer may be leaning toward TV is that he would like to know what happens to Cornelius between 1804 and 2010. In the book, I didnt go into a lot of detail about that because I planned on using that period to provide the content for subsequent books. In other words, on television, that could be an almost unlimited number of episodes.

The Old Victorian

16:41 Jan 13 2012
Times Read: 393

On the outskirts of a small suburb of the city, the old abandoned Victorian sat quietly. Feared by the school children and ignored by rest of the community, it had remained there forgotten about for decades. It had been built by a wealthy family shortly after the turn of the twentieth century. At that time there was nothing around except for beautiful countryside as far as the eye could see. In the decades that followed, the population growth exploded and people began to sprawl outward from the city. As more and more people left the city, the quiet countryside surrounding the old Victorian slowly disappeared. A house or two at first turned into a neighborhood. That neighborhood became a subdivision, that subdivision was then joined by another and so on. Eventually, the need for a school system arose and it was joined by a police department and a fire station. The suburb had been born, very much in the same way that most of them are. But none of that progressive development had encroached upon the old house. Although they no longer lived in the house, the surviving family members had retained the acreage of land surrounding that house. It wasn’t until recently, relatively speaking, that sections of the land had been carved up and sold off. Therefore, the old Victorian sat alone during much of the formation of that small city. No one cared about this home, nor did they know if it was still owned by an original family member. All they knew is that there was no longer anyone living in it and in a sense, they were right.

Reviewing the Play

19:05 Jan 08 2012
Times Read: 395

“Oh, that’s bullshit, they’re going to review!” one man said angrily.

“What’s wrong with that? I wanna see the call made right.” said his friend.

“That’s crap Andy, you saw the play, they’re gonna take all day to tell us what we already know.”

“I don’t know it, they don’t know it, if they’re gonna have replay, then I want it to work.” The game cut away for a commercial break, Cornelius was out for some conversation tonight and he saw this as a chance.

“Pardon me, I don’t mean to intrude, but what is this ‘review’ you speak of?” Cornelius asked to one of the men.

“What are you, serious? You don’t know what a review is? You’re not a sports fan are you?”

“Although I do enjoy them, my line of work prevents me from viewing a lot of television.”

“You look like a normal guy, you aint one of them are ya?” replied the man. Cornelius understood exactly what he was insinuating and he didn’t appreciate it, but he wasn’t here tonight to show this stranger just what kind of a man he was. He looked him dead in the eye and furled his brow.

“Hey, look, it was just a joke, I’m sorry. You don’t know me, I don’t know you, I shouldn’t be saying stuff like that. Listen, a few years ago, they came up with this new rule that the referees can look at the video of the last play when they’re not sure what call to make. They’ll look at it over and over, from this angle and that angle to try to get the call right.”

“Let me see if I understand you. A play or a score is made during the game. The result of the play is unknown until the judges watch a recording of it. After which a determination is made. Wouldn’t that directly affect the outcome of the game?”

“That’s right” said the other sports fan “and there’s a lot ridin’ on these games.”

“So what do you think about it?” It all seemed so very ridiculous to Cornelius, his answer to the man was this:

“When machines invent sport and it is played by machines for the entertainment of machines, let them have this ‘review’, but man invented sport. It is played by man, for the entertainment of man. Therefore, let a man officiate it.”

“ I like your style buddy, you’re all right!” He said as he patted Cornelius on the back. He gestured to the bartender and said “Let me get this man’s next one.”

No Choice

17:37 Jan 06 2012
Times Read: 400

He couldn’t be sure, but he might be the only person in the entire city who knew what was out there. In a city of this size and all of them vulnerable, thousands of people could be in danger.

Jackson grabbed a pencil out of the cup and used a piece of paper for scratch, he needed to do the math to put things into better perspective. He assumed that the woman from downtown, the hooker, was responsible for the latest killings. That was three men in one night, if she did that each week…that came to one hundred and fifty six people in a year. If this Rita woman was capable of the same carnage, that equaled three hundred and twelve. Considering that Cornelius was a man capable of destroying a restroom, a restaurant and a house, it would stand to reason that he was capable of killing even greater numbers than the ladies. Nonetheless, for the ease of calculation, Jackson used the same numbers. The total was frightening, four hundred and sixty eight people in the span of a year were at risk of being savagely murdered. In five years the total was over twenty three hundred and in ten years the number was staggering, it approached nearly five thousand people. Not to mention, if this Cornelius or any one of them were able make more creatures like themselves, then the numbers grew exponentially out of control. To former Detective Curtis Jackson, this was not an acceptable outcome.
