Minnie Harrell was an old country woman. Not highly educated, not worldly smart but she new life. The oldest of several brothers and sisters, she took care of them after her mother died. She was 5 years old when she began to cook for the family. As best she could anyway. Her mother died of what the old folks call milk leg. It was believed that after some mothers gave birth their milk traveled from their breasts down into their legs causing them to grow huge.

When she was still a young woman she married George Harrell and gave him several children, my father being one of them.

She was a simple woman who lived by the land and knew every inch of her farm and home on it. She planted by the moon and stars. IF she had a headache she would tie a white rag around her head as she swore it got rid of the pain.

She would make us grand kids toys out of rags and whatever else she had. We cherished those toys more then if they had come form Macey's. She is a woman who never waisted anything so you better not look into the soup pot when it was cooking as you never knew what was going to float to the top. Sometimes it was just best to eat with your eyes closed. It was always good tho. I am allergic to bee's and one day when I was staying with her I got stung several times. She had no way to get me to the hospital so she used a home remedy and put wet tobacco on the stings. I never even got sick.

She chewed tobacco until the day she died. Apple tobacco to be exact and sometimes she would ask for a "box" of beer. She never said a disparaging thing to anyone except once. Her daughter Betty died her hair red once. She looked like a cu-tip covered with iodine. Grandma was popping peanuts by the fire in the kitchen fireplace. She looked over the rim of her glasses with those large chocolate eyes and never missing a beat said "Betty..your hair looks like shit!" That was the only time I ever heard her swear.

She would make us cookies but being raised the way she was she never used much sugar. We would stuff them in our mouths and then run outside to spit them out so as not to hurt her feelings.

As she didn't have a walker, she would push an old lawn more which had the motor removed around the neighborhood. She never would use the walker we got her.

She died several years ago in her home in my mom's arms.

She was a wonderful human being. I love her very much and can't wait to see her again.

I love you grandma!
