Late one night while sitting at a bar waiting for his friends Neal sees Ashley walk in. He has seen her before, but tonight, something was different about her. She looks as though she has been crying. Neal wants to go and ask her what is wrong when his friends finally come in. It is at that time when he notices that they don't even see her and just walk right through her to their table.
Neal has heard of these types of things before but has never really experienced them for himself for you see... Ashley is a ghost, a soul that has not crossed over to the other side and she was looking straight at him as if asking for his help when his friends walked through her. As much as Neal wanted to go over to where she was to see what was wrong but did not want to look like a fool because he was not sure if anyone else could see her.
When Neal looked back over to where Ashley was standing earlier after saying hello to the guys, she was no longer there. Neal put Ashley to the back of his mind as he and the guys hung out. They hung out most of the night checking out both the girls and the boys. During this time some of Neal's friends had met both girls and guys that they liked and went there own ways and the rest of them ran into other friends that had invited them to a party. As they were walking out, Neal had a sensation of being watched; he turned around and saw Ashley watching him again. Instead of going to the party with his friends, Neal told them that he would see them later and went to talk to Ashley.
In the meantime, Ashley took a seat at a table in a dark corner and waited for Neal to come over. Once at the table, Neal sat down with his back to the crowd so that no one would think he was crazy talking to himself. During there brief conversation, Ashley asked if they could go somewhere else to talk. Neal thought for a moment and remembered a place in Como Park that no one else knew about. He told Ashley of the place and told her that he would meet her there in 45 minuets. Ashley watched as Neal left the bar and as soon as he was gone she vanished.
As Neal was driving to Como Park he was wondering what was going on and if anyone else saw Ashley in the bar or if they new she was around. Ashley appeared as Neal was pulling into a parking spot. Neal got out of his 1999 forest green Saturn and walked over to where Ashley was standing. Since Neal had a clearer view of Ashley he noticed that she was in a wedding gown so he had to ask...
"Ashley, can you tell me what happened to you?"
"I'm not sure where to start Neal, but I supposed I could start at the beginning. I was born into a wealthy family in 1975 here in Minneapolis; I went to the best schools and was able to go to Harvard University where I started my law degree. I was unable to finish my schooling because my grandmother took ill and my family needed me to help with her care. During my time back at home, my father arranged for me to meet Trevor. Trevor's dad was a friend of my father so it was obvious thing to do.
Trevor and I had dated for two years and one night when we went out, Trevor proposed to me. I wanted to say no, but something my father had mentioned to me three days before this prompted me to say yes. My mother had arranged for all of the wedding plans to be taken care of through a wedding planning agency and we were married on June 20, 1998. During this time I found out that Trevor never truly really loved me, he was in love with the money that I was to inherit from my grandfather upon his death. Little did Trevor know that the money that I was to get was going to go into trust for me and my children but not to my future husband unless... I was to pass before and children were to be had.
The day of the wedding was like a fairy tale for me. I only wanted to be married once in my lifetime due to all of the divorce and broken marriages in the world. We were married at 1 pm in the afternoon and the reception was held afterward. We flew out the next day for our honeymoon in Hawaii, and during our time in Hawaii, Trevor was slowly poising me with a non-traceable chemical in my drinks and when we returned home he would add it to my food. I was getting sicker and sicker by the day and the doctors could not tell me what was going on. I went into a coma just before Christmas and never did wake up.
Trevor was seeing another woman the whole time we were together and now they are both living off of my inheritance. My parents are besides themselves trying to figure out what happened to me. I am looking for someone to help me prove that Trevor was the one who did this and so that I can finally move on to the next life, that is why you are able to see me Neal."
"Thank you for tell me your story, Ashley, but I am not sure what I can do to help you prove that Trevor did this to you. I am also wondering why I am the only one who can see you."
"I am not sure why you are the only one that can see me Neal. But since you can, I really need your help to solve the case so that I can move on. Please say you will help me prove that Trevor was the one that killed me."
Neal thought about this for a long time and finally he said, "I will try my best to help you prove that Trevor was the one that poisoned you to death Ashley."
"Thank you Neal. Maybe in that time we will figure out why it is that you are the only one that can see me."
"Tell me Ashley, where do you think we should start?"
"I am not sure, maybe we should start with Trevor himself and see if he will give any hints or we could start with the doctors that saw me when I was sick."
"Ashley, if you could get me a list of the doctors that you saw when you were sick, I will start checking with them. But as for tonight, I need to get home and let this all sink in along with getting some rest. How will I know when you have the information together?"
"I am not sure Neal, I will think of something, but if you could let me know where you live, I will see if I could stop in there okay?"
After their conversation, Neal gave Ashley the information that she would need in order to get to his apartment and then left the park to go home and get some rest. Neal fell into a fitful sleep and was dreaming of a young man that was with his grandfather and they were talking about his grandfathers past and how he used to see people that were deceased. Some of these deceased had moved on to the next lift but some of them had not. It did not matter why some of them had moved on and some had not, his grandfather helped them all in some way. The young man's grandfather told him that he may have passed the gift on to his daughter and in turn his daughter may have passed it on to her children.
Neal awoke in a cold sweat from the dream that he was having and realized that the young man was him, and it was his grandfather that was telling him that he might have the gift of seeing people who were no longer of this world. He now knew why he was able to see Ashley but he still was not sure where to start on helping her so that she may move on to the next life.
It was already six o’clock in the morning; so Neal stayed up and got ready for work. He showered, shaved and got dressed and as he was about to walk out the door he felt a cold chill behind him. Neal turned around and saw Ashley standing in his kitchen.
"Aren't you going to have breakfast Neal?" Ashley asked.
"I don't usually eat breakfast; I just stop for a cup of coffee and go to work."
"You really should eat something in the morning, but I guess you have gone this long without eating in the morning you should be alright."
"Ashley, since you are here do you have the names and addresses of the doctors you saw when you were sick?"
"I do, but there are a couple that are no longer in town here and I am not sure how you wanted to get in contact with them so you may have to go to there old offices."
"I still don't know how I am going to go about asking these doctors questions about you since I am not you next of kin but I will do my best. And by the way, I know why I am able to see you; my grandfather had the gift of sight and passed it on to me through my mother. I have not been able to ask my mother if she has the gift or not and I would like to ask her before I ask any of the doctors if that is alright with you."
"That is okay Neal, I understand that you have questions about your abilities but please don't take too long okay?"
Neal took the information that Ashley had for him and went to work. On the way to work he called his mother and asked if she could meet him for lunch so they could talk. They made plans for noon at a Mexican diner. Neal reviewed the information that Ashley gave him and started making plans on which one he was going to contact first and made his own list.
At 11:45 am, Neal left his office to meet his mother at the Mexican diner. Once there he saw that she was already there and went to sit down at the table with her. He ordered a diet coke and waited for the waitress leave.
"Mom, can I ask you a question about grandpa?"
"Sure Neal, you can ask me anything."
"Did grandpa have a gift of seeing people who are deceased?"
Neal's mom had to think of what she was going to tell her son so it took a few minuets before she answered his question and he was starting to get nervous.
"Mom please, you need to tell me if grandpa had this gift."
"Your grandpa did have a gift of seeing people who were deceased Neal, why are you asking me about this now?"
"Mom, I have the same sight as grandpa did. I saw a girl last night when the guys and I went out. She says that she believes her husband killed her for her inheritance and wants me to help her prove it."
