THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A PSYCHOTIC EPISODE



-An underlying chemical imbalance which causes vulnerability in a person.



Triggered by something the person finds to be very stressful



Usually the person will have a history of psychotic episodes



An obvious change in the thought process. While your thought process is on an average basis when a psychotic episode begins (which is usually rather rapidly) the thought process is distorted.



Psychotic episodes are always very painful to endure.



SYMPTOMS OF PSYCHOTIC EPISODES



-Hallucinations, hearing or seeing something strange and rather seeing the stimulus not as strange but to be absolutely real.



-Delusion, believing something that could not be true, a physical impossibility like you were born on the Sun, and you are the god of people who live in your refrigerator, to be true.



The most common delusions paranoia or an extreme fear that something is going to happen to you or people are conspiring against you.



-and the most common symptom is difficulty communication



ANTI-PSYCHOTIC MEDICATIONS





-anti-psychotic medications reduce the number of psychotic episodes and allow the patient to function better.



Some patients, due to the medications, suffer from side- effects such as drowsiness, restlessness, muscle spasms, tremors, dry mouth and blurry vision. Generally these are short term conditions. Long term effect Is characterized by involuntary movements mostly effecting mouth lips and tongue.
