Consecration of Ritual Tools

Consecration of Ritual Tools

The dedication of new ritual tools is done with ritual. The purpose is to purify them and dedicate them for magical use only. Once they have been consecrated you should not allow anyone else to handle them for at least the first six months to allow time for your energies to infuse them. It is best never to allow anyone else to handle your ritual tools, but if you have a partner you may share them between you and they will become attuned to the two of you. On no account are they to be used for mundane purposes after they have been consecrated unless they are first deconsecrated and removed from ritual use. The ritual for this follows the consecration ritual. Before they are consecrated the tools are of no magical use, and after they are deconsecrated they are again of no ritual value. The consecration makes them other than what they appear to be, a knife, a cup, etc.

In the following ritual the tools are purified with the four elements and then dedicated to the Lady and the Lord. You may use the particular deities which you venerate, or omit the mention of the deities in the dedication altogether if you like in favor of a reference to the powers of the universe. Phrase this in your own words, as you see the higher power. You may dedicate your tools to love, or other grand concepts if you prefer. The first step in the consecration is the casting of the circle. You will need the usual materials for the circle, a bowl of salt, a bowl of water, altar candles, watchtower candles, a red candle, incense and a censer.

Consecration of the Chalice, Athame or Other Ritual Tool

"Before these assembled spirits I bring (name type of tool) to be dedicated to the service of the Lady and Lord."

(Pass tool three times through smoke of the incense.) "By the power of air, be thou purified. Be thou dedicated to purity of thought and to harmlessness that all intentions for which thou art used may harm none and be for the good of all. Spirits of the east, in sweet air born. In swirling winds polish these tools, and sweep from them all phantasm and illusion."

(Pass tool three times through or over the flame of the fire candle.)"By the power of fire, be thou purified. Be thou dedicated to purity of desire, and to harmlessness that all goals which thou do help achieve may harm none and be for the good of all. Spirits of the south, in fire born. In shining flames purify these tools, and burn from them all impurities."

(Take a few drops of water and sprinkle or dab on instrument.) "By the power of water, be thou purified. Be thou dedicated to purity of emotion, and to harmlessness that all that thou shalt be used in a spirit of harmony, harming none and for the good of all. Spirits of the west, in water born. In cool waters cleanse these tools, and wash from them all hurt and harm."

(Touch instrument to the pentacle or salt) "By the power of earth, be thou purified. Be thou dedicated to steadfastness and purity of purpose, that my will be achieved without wavering, with harm to none and for the good of all. Spirits of the north, in cool earth born. In mother earth ground these tools, and take from them all spirits dark."

If this is a chalice, present it first to the Lady, then to the Lord, if athame, reverse the order. All other instruments use personal preference, but it is courtesy to present them to Her first.

Presentation for the Chalice

"Lady, Keeper of the Cauldron of Wisdom, bless this chalice. Let it be as thy cauldron, a vessel of productivity that it may be worthy to dispense thy bounty. Let it be used in thy service and in the service of humanity. Let it be so bound that no harm may come of it to any being, but let it rather be an instrument of good-will and understanding; of loving harmony. To thy sacred self I dedicate this vessel, (name of vessel), that it and I may long be of service to thee."

"Lord, companion to the Lady, Guardian of the wild things, bless this chalice and keep watch over it. Guard the works which come forth from it, that they ever be in the service of thee and thy Lady, that they be of service to humankind, and that they abide by the laws of harmony. To thee I vow I shall use it for her sacred purposes, and for no other. So mote it be."

Presentation for the Athame

"Lord, companion to the Lady, bless this athame. Let it be as the spring rains which fall upon the earth to cause Her to bring forth Her bounty. Let it quicken my hopes and dreams, yet keep them from causing harm. Let it guide them in the harmony of the seasons, bringing forth only good for all. Lord, bless this athame, (name of athame), that it be used ever In the worship and honor of the Gods."

"Lady, Keeper of the Cauldron of Wisdom, bless this athame that it shall bring forth joy, and shall cause no pain nor disharmony to any. I dedicate this athame (name of athame), symbol of the Lord of the Forest, to Thy service. May it ever bring thee joy and pride. So mote it be."

This ritual, with suitable changes, may be used to dedicate other tools as well as these. Simply change the name of the tool and any specific actions which will not apply to the tool in question.

Deconsecration of Ritual Tools

The intent of this ritual is to purge the tool of it's built up energies and return it to mundane use. It may be used when passing on a tool to another to remove your personal stamp from the tool to allow them to replace yours with their own. The means used to do this will depend upon the tool and what it is constructed of. As a prelude to deconsecration the tool may be purified of energies stored within it by use of one of the four elements. It may be buried in salt or earth for two days, left in runing water for two days, left in standing water for a week, or exposed to the sun/moon/elements for a week. This serves to negate the energies. Follow this with the simple ritual below.

Cast a circle. Pass the tool through the smoke of the incense and state: "I purify you with the element of air, and return you to your original state. No longer an implement of magic, but only a (name of item)." Pass the tool through the flame of a candle and state: "I purify you with the element of fire, and return you to your original state. No longer an implement of magic, but only a (name of item)." Dip the tool into a bowl of consecrated water and state: "I purify you with the element of water, and return you to your original state. No longer an implement of magic, but only a (name of item)." Touch the tool to the pentacle or the salt and state: "I purify you with the element of earth, and return you to your original state. No longer an implement of magic, but only a (name of item)."

Lay the tool on the altar and hold your hand over it. Check to see if you feel any energies remaining in the tool. If not, state: "I hereby cleanse you of all esoteric meaning and return you to the mundane use for which you were intended. As I will, so mote it be." If there is remaining energy, repeat the ritual and check again. In stubborn cases the preliminary cleansing with the elements may need to be repeated, and the ritual conducted again. This ritual may be used on ritual jewelery or other items you wish to pass on to another as well as tools

Candle, Talk to Me!

by Silver RavenWolf

1. If you can light your illuminators right away and they have strong flames, that means our workplaces is conductive to your magick. If you have problems lighting your illuminators, that means there are outside forces that will weaken your work.

2. If your illuminators have a weak flame throughout your magickal work, it means that you are facing some sort of barrier. Weak flames can indicate instability, loss, obstacle. Feed the weak flames with south energy to make them stronger.

3. When your illuminators or focused candles possess a jumping flame, it means that things are hot around the situation. It is up to you to decide whether that is good for your work or not.

4. If you are using two focused candles, each representing a person, watch the flames closely. See if one flame is stronger than the other. Maybe this means that one person has more authority or the upper hand.

5. If you are using two focused candles, each representing a person, and both flames are jumping, that means that both parties have strong feelings for each other. You must determine if those feelings are hatred or passion.

6. Flames dancing in a deosil pattern means your magick meets with the blessings of the elements and divinity. But if it dances in a widdershins pattern, a banishing activity is afoot.

7. Notice the flame. If it carries a preponderance of a specific color, I suggest you check your color correspondence chart to divine its meaning.

8. If you hear a soft chatter, it denotes pure energy. Frequent, mid-range chatter indicates the blusterings of an individual in authority. Harsh, strong chatter means chaos.

9. Notice which direction (north, east, south, west, or straight up) is the flame pointing. The kind of energy that surronds your work will depend on the direction that the flame is pointing.

Seeing Past Lifes

04:16 Jun 27 2006

To see your past life (s) Be prepared if you do this one, it is strong and sometimes you will be surprised to see who you see. If this is something you are not used to doing, I strongly suggest you have someone with you when you do this. Sometimes it is upsetting to see yourself in a different life, sometimes the memories are over bearing!

Set a white candle aflame in a darkened room and place in a position

so that it lights your face as you stand before the mirror, but does

not reflect in the mirror.

Say:

Oracle of Lunar light,

Send me now the second sight.

Gaze ibto your reflection's eyes, or just above and between them.

Gradually your reflection will dissolve and you will see another face

appear. This will be from a past life. You can attempt to see more

with a little bit of practice!

Things to do with kids at Litha

Body: Things to do with kids at Litha

Midsummer Memento Wreath

Christine Dvornik Age: Preschool and up

Time: An hour or more

Type of activity: Arts and Crafts

Make summer souvenirs into a household decoration!

Parents...

This activity will help develop your child's fine-motor skills. It's

also a great way to capture time spent together.

Materials needed:

Heavy cardboard

Large- and medium-sized bowls or pots (to trace your wreath)

Paintbrush

Glue

Summer treasures (flowers, leaves, sand, small pebbles,

seashells)

Yarn or string

Scissors

Markers, crayons, and other decorative items (optional)

What to do:

Step One: Trace the circle for your wreath by drawing around the

large pot or bowl on the cardboard.

Step Two: Cut out the circle. Then, using the smaller pot, trace

another circle inside the one you just made.

Step Three: Carefully cut around the smaller circle you just drew.

Now you have the pattern for your wreath.

Step Four: If you'd like, color or paint the wreath before you add

your summer mementos.

Step Five: Using the scissors, poke a small hole in the top of the

wreath.

Step Six: Thread several inches of the string or yarn through the

hole, tie the ends in a knot, and slide the string so the knot is

hidden behind the wreath. This is the "hanger."

Step Seven: Using the paintbrush, cover the wreath completely with

glue.

Step Eight: Dust a layer of sand over the glue so that the entire

wreath is covered.

Step Nine: Let the wreath dry for about 10 minutes and then gently

shake off any sand that hasn't stuck to the glue.

Step Ten: Decide where you want to place your summer mementos and

glue each of them to the wreath (make sure one memento covers the

hole at the top.)

Step Eleven: Let the wreath dry and hang it up to remember your

summer fun.

Stress Cleansing Spell

06:02 Jun 25 2006
Times Read: 607

Stress Cleansing Spell - To cleanse away stress, light a white candle and place a crystal before. Lay the Knight of Cups card from your favorite tarot deck in front of the crystal. See the candle's energy entering the card and building up, then pick up the card and hold it with both hands. Allow the stored energy to flow from the card into your hands, up your arms, and through your whole body. Feel the stress forced from your body by the energy. When the stress is gone, lay the card down and extinguish the candle. Let the card sit until the negative energy has drained

away. Repeat as needed.

Obstacle-dissolving Spell

Materials:

Ace of Swords

Place the card where you can see it,then visulize the sword popping right into your hand.Feel the way it fits in your palm, and spend time getting used to it's weight.(This is important because the blade is heavy and doubleeged, and if you don't weild it properly, you could hurt yourself.)Then see yourself slicing through stumbling blocks, defending and protecting as foes shy away and enimes fall. Finally, look at the sword and say:

Precious sword,champion Ace

What keeps my goals from my embrace

So my success is sure,indeed

And when I call you to my hand

Come with quickness where'er I stand

Know that you can call the sword back whenever the need arises.

A Spell to Becoming Calmed and Centered

Body: A Spell to Becoming Calmed and Centered

Equipment

A very smooth, rounded stone, smaller than your fist; and some soothing taped music.

The Spell

Sit while holding the stone and listening to the music in a quiet room at home, or in the outdoors if the weather is nice. Breathe deeply and rythmically. Begin inhaling through your mouth, then exhaling through your nostrils with a long, steady humming note. With each exhalation, make the note smoother and draw it out longer. Breathe your tension and anxiety into the stone. When you feel calm and centered, put the stone on the ground, open the circle and walk away. The stone will dissipate the tension into the Earth, to be transmutted; if you wish, you can retrieve the stone in a day or two for later use.

Glossary of Wiccan Words

There are so many things associated with Wicca that can have a different meaning in the mundane world. Often folks can become confused about what they mean. Following is a list of some common terms that might be heard in association with Wicca along with definitions to help explain them.

Altar - A space tools and other symbols are placed during ritual. Used as a point of focus for the participants. Altars can be set up for one-time use during ritual or as permanent focal points. For example an altar to prosperity can be left up indefinitely and helps one to continually focus on the goal whenever he/she sees the altar.

Athame - (AH-tha-may or ah-THA-may) A ceremonial knife with a dual edged blade used to direct energy. Traditionally black handled though other styles are often used. The athame should never be used to draw blood and is often a very personal tool used only by the owner. Symbolizes either the element of Air or Fire depending on the tradition one practices.

Besom - (BEH-som) A broom; most frequently used to sweep a circle clear of unwanted energy. Usually stored Bristles pointed up to prevent damage.

Boline - (BOW-leen) A single edged blade, often with a white handle. This blade is used for ritual cutting such as harvesting of herbs or carving into candles. The boline may also be sickle shaped.

Book of Shadows - Abbreviated BoS. A collection of rituals, information, research, spells, and other information that is meaningful to the owner. A record of the owner's magical journey and practice. For this reason it is often kept private. Some groups or covens may keep a special Book of Shadows which holds all of the information specific to that group. This type of Book is often had copied by members of the group as they progress on their path.

Censer - A pot, dish, or other object that incense can be burned in.

Chalice - A cup in which wine, water, or other beverages may be held. A ritual tool that can symbolize the Water element, etc.

Circle - 1. The sacred space in which a ritual is held. 2. A group of individuals who practice ritual together. More casual than a coven.

Correspondence - An idea or item that reminds one of something else, particularly of an element. For example: Feathers are an air correspondence.

Coven - (CUH-ven) A group of individuals who regularly meet together for ritual purposes. This is a very close group like a family. Covens are often very selective about membership because of the close relationship. Coven members generally take vows to each other and the coven relationship is a very serious commitment.

Deosil - (Jeh-shul) The direction of sun wise; the direction the sun takes through the sky. In the northern hemisphere this is clockwise. Deosil motion is used to bring things into the circle or working.

Elements - The 4 natural elements Earth, Air, Fire and Water. May sometimes include a 5th element called Spirit. In modern Wicca there are thought to be 5 elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit. Each has specific qualities and correspondences. Also called Directions or Quarters.

Esbat - Generally a celebration of the Full Moon, but can also celebrate the New Moon and Quarters, as well.

Pentacle - 1.A five pointed star within a circle thought to represent the five elements and their connection to each other. 2. A surface with a 5 pointed star on it used in ritual to place items upon for charging with energy. A symbol of the element Earth.

Ritual - A ceremony which focuses on honoring deity, performing a spell, or celebrating a special time. As the word Ritual implies, these ceremonies are often repeated on a regular basis. For example a Yule ritual may be repeated every year at the same time.

Sabbat - A day with specific meaning in the wheel of the year. There are generally 8 Sabbats, roughly a month and a half apart representing the turning of the seasons and the cycle of the sun.

Spell - A process used to focus one's will toward a goal.

Tradition - A specific way of practicing the Craft. There are many traditions in Wicca. However, it is common for solitary practitioners as well as covened wiccans to practice an "eclectic" tradition which is made up of practices from various paths.

Wand - a piece of stone, wood or metal, generally no longer than the tip of the middle finger to the elbow used to direct energy in circle. A symbol of the element Air or Fire depending on the tradition one practices.

Waning - The aspect of the cycle of the moon when the moon becomes smaller. The waning moon is a good time to work towards removing obstacles or habits that hold you back.

Waxing - The aspect of the cycle of the moon when the moon becomes more full. The waxing moon is a good time to work towards bringing something into one's life.

Widdershins - Not sun wise. In the Northern Hemisphere this is counterclockwise. Widdershins motion is used to remove or release from the circle or working

Casting the Ritual Circle

23:12 Jun 24 2006
Times Read: 610

Casting the Ritual Circle

Most traditions cast the circle basically in the same way. The wording of the spoken parts is different, the colors and symbols used to indicate the cardinal points are different, who does what is different, but the basic principal is the same. The circle is traced with one of the ritual tools by a person walking in a circle clockwise and the four cardinal points are marked in one way or another. Here I will outline in detail a circle casting that is partly my creation and partly as it was taught to me in my first coven. There are many other ways and words depending upon the tradition you are a member of, do what feels right to you when casting the circle, what you are use to. If you have no specific ritual of your own, you are welcome to utilize mine, that's why it's here. It is designed for use by a solitaire, if you will be using it for coven work you may want to make some minor adjustments such as sharing out the actions among the coveners rather than having one person perform them all.

There are some basic concepts you must understand about circle casting. First of all, the circle is not a flat, one dimensional line on the floor. It is a sphere of energy that intersects the plane of the floor, extending above your head and below your feet.

You are in effect enclosing yourself in a bubble. The bubble is an energy field and is most commonly visualized as cold, blue or violet fire streaming from the tip of the athame.

Also, there are two terms that you will hear often, deosil and widdershins. Deosil means clockwise

and widdershins means counter clockwise

In the northern hemisphere, circles are cast deosil and dismissed widdershins. In the southern hemisphere this is reversed and the circle is cast widdershins and dismissed deosil. The outline below is for the northern hemisphere, if you are in the southern hemisphere don't forget to reverse the directions.

A circle may be cast with an athame, wand, sword, incense stick, feather, sprig of herbs or even your finger, it is the energy that you put into the circle that forms it, not the tool you use. Some people find it useful to trace the circle on the floor with salt so it is easier to see it's boundaries. You may do this if it helps you. In the past many magicians did this as a regular part of casting their circle, and it won't hurt anything if you would like to do it. You may also use a chalk outline, flower petals, crystals, or candles. If you use candles be cautious about flowing robes catching alight, use huricane lamps to cover the flames. I have heard of using flour, but it is harder to vacuum out of the carpet after the ritual than salt. As for the size, a circle may be small enough just for one person to sit in or may be as large as needed for a group, the size you cast should be based upon your need and the size of the gathering. A nine foot circle is traditional, increased by three foot increments if needed, but let your needs be your guide.

Casting the Circle

Gather your materials. Your ritual tools should be on the altar, as should the altar candles (two white candles), the censer, altar incense, a bowl of water, a bowl of salt and a red candle. You should also have the watchtower candles ready in their places at the edge of the circle area, green for North/earth, red for South/fire, yellow for East/air, and blue for West/water. These may be jar candles that are reused for each circle. We shall assume that your altar is already set up and oriented toward the North near the outside edge of the space the circle will be cast. Use a compass to find north. We shall further assume that you have already purified yourself and the space and are dressed in your robes or skyclad as you prefer. You are now ready to begin.

The Circle will be arranged as above

Stand before the altar and light the altar candles. Say the following to announce the casting of the circle:

Then, place the bowl of water in the center of the altar. Put the point of your athame in the water and give the exorcism of water as follows:

Set the bowl aside. Place the bowl of salt in the center of the altar. Put the point of your athame in the salt and give the exorcism of salt as follows:

Set the bowl aside. Light the charcoal in the censer. Place the container of incense in the center of the altar. Place the point of your athame in the incense and give the exorcism of incense as follows:

Set the incense aside. Take up your athame, and begining in the North, walk deosil (clockwise) around the circle facing outward. Hold the athame in your projective hand, right if you are right handed, left if you are left handed. As you walk, point the athame at the ground and visualize clearly the blue violet fire forming a circle around you. Recite the following words as you walk:

When you return to the altar put down the athame and pour some of the consecrated incense onto the smouldering charcoal. You will now walk the circle four more times saying the following as you go (fill in the appropriate element on each circuit):

First you will sprinkle the consecrated water as you go; then you will sprinkle the consecrated salt as you go; then you will carry the burning incense around the circle; and finally you will carry the lit, red candle around the circle. When you return to the altar with the red candle you may extinguish it. This purifies the circle with each of the four elements.

Next you will call the quarters. Light a taper from the altar candle to carry with you. Walk to each of the cardinal points in turn, begining with the North and call upon the Guardians of the Watchtowers with the following invocation, fill in the appropriate direction in the blank:

Use the lighted taper to light each of the watchtower candles in turn after the invocation. The circle is cast, you may now proceed with the ritual.

If at some point during the ritual it becomes necessary to leave the circle temporarily, you may use the athame to cut an opening in the circle. Holding the athame in your projective hand, insert it into the wall of the circle near the floor. Pull the athame up cutting the wall as you go to about six feet above the ground. Then cut across the top and down the otherside to form a door. This opening may be used to exit the circle and then re-enter. Afterward, before going on with the ritual, close the doorway by retracing the steps you took to cut the opening. Starting at the bottom left, move the athame upward, across the top, and down the right side of the doorway, sealing the opening as you go. After resealing the circle you may resume the ritual.

When the ritual is complete you will want to dismiss the Watchtowers individually with the following invocation of thanks, fill in the appropriate direction in the blank:

As you go to each Watchtower blow out the candle marking it. Retrace the circle with the athame widdershins, visualizing the energy being returned to the athame as the circle is unmade. Say the following as you stand before the altar:

As you speak, hold the athame high then release the energy to the universe. Visualize the blue violet flames streaming toward the heavens, off to manifest the purpose of the circle. The circle is now open.

Be sure to ground yourself after the ritual to return the excess energies to the earth. Extinguish the altar candles and gather the Watchtower candles and store them for future use. Tidy up. The ashes from the incense, the water and the drippings from the candles should be buried in the earth. If this is impossible, you can pour the water on a houseplant and wrap up the candle drippings and ashes and throw them away. The salt may be reused and any incense not used may be returned to it's container. The red candle used to represent fire may be reused as may the altar candles and Watchtower candles, but any candles used for a magical working should be allowed to burn themselves out as they cannot be reused. This allows all of the energy they contain to be released

A Self Dedication Ritual

A Self Dedication Ritual

===================================================

please write to: BM Avalonia, London, WC1N 3XX, United

Kingdom. (Please include a SAE)

===================================================

Preparation

When you decide that you want to do a self-dedication,

plan the date of the ritual at least a month in

advance, choosing a suitable time, perhaps consulting

astrological tables, or at least the phases of the

moon. It is best done on a waxing or full moon.

Start your preparation at the new moon. Make sure that

you have a day off work for the initiation itself. You

may already have decided on a magickal or witch name.

If you haven't yet decided on your witch name, find

one through meditation and pathworking in the daily

ritual leading up to the rite of self-initiation.

Begin preparing for the self-initiation by performing

a daily ritual. Start by creating a sacred space.

Purify the area with incense and sprinkling salt

water. Visualize a sphere around yourself, and call on

the powers of the four quarters, visualizing the

elemental landscapes. (more...circle casting)

Call on the Goddess and the God, by whatever names you

prefer to call them. Declare to the Elements, the

Goddess and the God that you are embarking on the path

of dedication, and ask for their help in preparing

you.

Spend some time in meditation on the meaning of

dedication, and opening yourself up for any messages

from the Goddess and God. Thank and say farewell to

the Goddess, God, and Elements, and close the circle.

Closer to the time

Try and spend time every day in the week leading up to

the self-dedication rite working out your vows and

meditating. Make sure that the vows you make are

realistic! It is better to make less demanding vows

than to make highly demanding vows and not live up to

them.

The Ritual

Spend the day in quiet meditation and fasting. Drink

only pure water, or if you really cannot do this,

allow yourself a small quantity of apple or grape

juice. Do not smoke, drink alcohol or take drugs! If

you are on prescribed medication, consult your doctor.

If the medication is short term, wait until you have

finished the course of medication before doing the

ritual.

If possible, go to a sacred site or wild place and

attune yourself with nature. Communicate with the

nature spirits, and ask for their blessings.

Think about the vows that you wish to make in your

initiation. Think of a vow to yourself, one to the

Goddess and God, and one to the Earth.

Before you start the ritual, have a purification bath.

You may put essential oils, herbs or sea salt in the

bath. Whilst in the bath, meditate on purifying your

aura. See your aura as grey and dirty, but gradually

becoming lighter and cleaner, until it is brilliant.

When you emerge from the bath, allow yourself to dry

naturally. Do not use a hair dryer, or rub yourself

with towels. Rub your entire body with oil. This may

be olive oil, grapeseed oil, or other vegetable oil,

scented with pure essential oils of your choice.

Perform the ritual skyclad if possible.

Have an altar set up, with an altar cloth on it, with

a chalice of wine, a piece of bread or cake on a

platter, a censer, two altar candles, some anointing

oil, your athame or other tool, any ritual jewellery

which will be put on at the end of the ritual to mark

your dedication, and two small dishes containing sea

salt and water (from a spring or sacred well if

possible). You may also wish to have images or statues

of the Goddess and God on the altar.

Light the candles and the incense, and purify your

ritual space. Hold your hands over the water dish and

say:

"I purify you, Oh water, in the blessed and mighty

names of the Goddess and God",

visualizing it glowing with white light. Do likewise

with the salt, then tip some of the salt into the

water, and mix it in with your forefinger.

Sprinkle the salt water around your ritual space.

Visualize a circle around you. (or cast a circle in

your usual way) Call on the elements, then on the

Goddess and God.

Declare your intent, saying something like: "I

(ordinary name) am prepared for dedication. I have

followed the path and fulfilled my vows, and I now

call upon the Goddess and the God to confer on me

wisdom and integrity. I ask for the blessings of air,

fire, water and earth".

Spend some time in meditation, and controlled

breathing to gather energy and achieve an altered

state of consciousness. You may also wish to use a

mantra or chant.

Meditate for a while on finding the stillness inside

yourself. When you are ready, stand before the altar,

and anoint yourself first with oil, then with salt

water and lastly wine, saying:

"I am reborn into my true and magickal self, and I

take on the name of (Witch name). I ask for the

blessings of the Goddess and God on my endeavours, and

I vow (make your vows)".

When anointing yourself you may wish to anoint your

chakras, or anoint yourself with a circle, pentagram,

or personal symbol. It is good to write down your vows

in your magickal diary, and sign the entry with your

witch name.

Present yourself to the quarters, stating that you are

now dedicated to the solitary path. Consecrate your

ritual jewellery with the four elements (incense,

water, salt and candle flame), and anoint it with oil

for spirit before putting it on.

Consecrate your athame or other tool in the same

manner, then hold it to your heart, feeling a link

with it, and filling it with your energy. Say

"I am a child of earth and starry heaven."

Hold it up to the moon and stars, and ask for the

blessings of the cosmos on it, then touch it to the

ground, and ask for the blessings of mother earth.

Lastly, consecrate the wine and cake by touching your

athame to them, and channelling energy through it.

Drink and eat, earthing yourself, then thank the

Goddess, God and Elements, and close the circle.

Remember: Write up your experiences in your magickal

diary. Refrain from ritual for at least the next week,

whilst you integrate the work.

Smudging: How to do it -- how not to do it

Smudging: How to do it -- how not to do it

Michelle Chihacou White Puma Klein-Hass

I came across a very interesting article from "Shaman's Drum" which was reprinted for Vision Quest Bookstore. I will attempt to convey the gist of it, along with my views, as a student of the Ways of the Teneh, about it. Smudging is a way of using the smoke from burning herbs as a way to cleanse the body, an object, or a given area of negative influences. I myself use smudging to "cleanse" crystals before using them in jewelry projects I may do, and for protecting my home from some recent "bad vibe"-producing events. (landlord troubles!) I imagine that the skillful use of the proper herbs could help in warding and banishing ceremonies as well, if used properly and with reverence. The three most used plant material for smudging are sage of all types, cedar and sweetgrass.

Sage

There are two major genii and several varieties of each genus of Sage that are used for smudging. Salvia, or the herb sage used for cooking, comes in two major varieties: S. officinalis, commonly known as Garden Sage, and S. apiana, commonly known as White Sage. Salvia varieties have long been acknowledged as healing herbs, reflected in the fact that its genus name comes from the Latin root word salvare, which is the verb "to heal" or "to save." Artemisia is the genus commonly considered "Sagebrush", and is more common in the wilds out here in California. There are two major varieties to the Artemisia genus: A. californica or Common Sagebrush, and A. vulgaris or Mugwort. There are many other varieties of both Salvia and Artemisia, and all are effective in smudging. Sage is burned in smudging ceremonies to drive out evil spirits, negative thoughts and feelings, and to keep Gan'n (negative entities) away from areas where ceremonials take place. In the Plains Sweatlodge, the floor of the structure is strewn with sage leaves for the participants to rub on their bodies during the sweat. Sage is also used in keeping sacred objects like pipes or Peyote wands safe from negative influence. In the Sioux nation, the Sacred Pipe is kept in a bundle with sage boughs. I would think special crystals could be so protected this way as well.

Cedar

True cedar is of the Thuja and Libocedrus genii. Some Junipers (Juniperus genus) are also called "cedar", thus complicating things some. Some Juniper varieties are cleansing herbs, especially J. monosperma, or Desert White Cedar. But for smudging, the best is Western Red Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) and California Incense Cedar (Libocedrus descurrens). Cedar is burnt while praying to the Great Spirit (Usen', the Source -- also known to Plains nations as Wakan Tanka) in meditation, and also to bless a house before moving in as is the tradition in the Northwest and Western Canada. It works both as a purifier and as a way to attract good energy in your direction. It is usually available in herb stores in chipped form, which must be sprinkled over a charcoal in a brazier. I like a piece of charcoaled mesquite for this purpose, rather than the commercial charcoal cake.

Sweetgrass

Very important to the Sioux and Cherokee nations, its botanical name is Hierochloë odorata. In these tribes, the sweetgrass is braided like hair braids. It could be burnt by lighting the end of it, or (more economically) by shaving little bits of it onto charcoal in a brazier. Again, use charcoaled Mesquite (I believe it comes packaged for barbecue use under the brand name "Red Arrow") to burn it, not pressed charcoal tablets. Sweetgrass is burnt after smudging with sage, to welcome in good influences after the bad had been driven out. Sweetgrass is very rare today, and traditional Plains people have been attempting to protect the last of it. Myself, I believe that Cedar, which is not endangered, can safely be used this way. Also Piñon pine needles (used more frequently by the Southwest Teneh, like the Navajo and Apache as well as the Pueblo people and the Zuni) and Copal (used by the Yaqui and in ancient times by the Azteca and the Maya) have similar effect. The three mentioned here are readily available either through gathering yourself or, in the case of copal resin, from any good herb shop.

Using Smudging

Burn clippings of the herb in a brazier... not a shell as some "new age" shamanic circles do... it is an insult to White Painted Woman (The Goddess) to do this, especially with the abalone shell which is especially sacred to Her. If the herb is bundled in a "wand", you can also light the end of the wand that isn't woody and use that. I like the latter way. Direct the smoke with your hands or with a Peyote (feather) wand over the person or thing you wish to smudge. If you can see auras, look for discolored places in the aura and direct the healing smoke towards those places on the patient's body. For cleansing a house, first offer cedar smoke to the four directions outside the house. Then, take a sage bough and go throughout the inside of the house, making sure the smoke penetrates every nook and cranny of the house. It might help also, if you have a power animal, to visualize your animal doing these things, to also dance your animal, and if you have a power song, to sing that too. Then finally, run through the house with a white candle that is well protected, to "light up" the house. Careful not to burn it down when you do it!!!

Final Thoughts

Smudging should be done with care, with reverence, and in an attitude of LOVE. Show your respect and honor to the plants that Usen' has given us for our healing, and they will return the favor by keeping us well and free from disease and negative energy. Aloe Vera plants, though not to be burnt, are good for the cleansing angle as well. Keep one or more potted Aloe Veras in the house (modern varieties are too tender to plant in anything but full shade outside) in organic (wood or ceramic, never plastic or metal) pots. To honor the plant when you transplant it, sprinkle the roots with corn meal and smudge it with cedar once it is transplanted. The spirit of Aloe Vera is a good protective spirit, and if you burn yourself, can also be used to heal your skin. Be sure to ask the plant's permission before cutting part of the leaf off for the healing juice. If you don't, the protective power of the plant will cease, and you will be left with but an inert houseplant... and perhaps some bad karma to boot.

Hi-dicho, it is finished.... ENJU!

Pe rsonal Cleansing

Choose candles according to your personal and daily preferences, I have found that any will work. Run a bath with as hot of water as you can stand. If you prefer, this ritual can be done in the shower. Use whatever bath oils work for you. Visualize all the day's negative energies surrounding you as you get into the water. Then, visualize all that negativity being removed from your Self by the water. Focus on your candle flames, meditate on cleansing your Self. When the water has cooled to the point of being uncomfortable, pull the stopper, and say these words: "Drain away these pains and troubles, As does this water pure and free. Take with it all this day's distress. As I will, so mote it be!" Dry yourself off and rub your preferred cream onto your body to protect you from negativity over the night. Prepare to sleep well!

This spell has worked wonders not only for me, but for other Wiccans that I have passed it to. I would be honored if you would choose to place this simple spell into your online Book of Shadows.

Blessed be... Naddya

Summer Solstice Spell

01:47 Jun 21 2006
Times Read: 621

Summer Solstice Spell

Today is one of the holiest days of the year. At first light, take a tall white or yellow candle and a short black candle outside; light them to symbolize the longest day and shortest night of the year. A flower-scented incense is good to burn while you intone the words below:

Brother Sun and Mother Moon,

Day is longest now.

Energies of the brilliant Sun

Aid all at work

Or having fun.

Longest day,

A blessing is,

From rise to set supreme is the Sun.

Fueling growth and

passions bright,

Strong and true is the solar light.

Bounty grows

And river flows,

As Earth is warmed and lighted.

Creative energy reaches zenith

on this day of shortest night.

Crops grow high and excitement grows,

with each new ray of Sun.

Every day,

All creatures play

and hail the mighty Sun.

Ancient solstice,

Fires burning,

Honor the Sun and feed the light.

Druid, Indian, Norse, and Celt all danced

on Summer Solstice,

joyously felt.

Solar winds

and solar flares

Wash away our hunger and our cares.

Mighty Sun,

King of warmth,

Makes humans to frolic and bees to swarm.

Keep this day

In memory bright,

To warm you on long winter nights.

May the rays of solstice keep us warm,

All through the year.

The Sun has kissed

Flower field and tree,

The Sun is supreme.

So mote it be.

by Abby Willowroot

Summer Sacred Space Ritual

Tap into the summer spirit for setting up your own sacred space. Start by gathering sea salt and lemon juice. Set up your space in your usual manner. Have a bowl of warm water on the altar and burn sandalwood incense. Add the sea salt and lemon juice to the water. Hold the bowl up to the Goddess, and ask that this liquid be blessed with the powers of purification and protection. Starting in the north, go around your home, sprinkling the water in each room. Be sure to include all doorways, windows, closets, and vents. Say as you go:

May this house be blessed

by the Goddess, so that

only the most beneficial

energies might enter.

How does Candle magic Work?

03:15 Jun 20 2006
Times Read: 622

How does Candle magic Work?

Body: How does Candle magic Work?

Basically, candle magic involves choosing a candle of an appropriate color

for the purpose of your work. Candles of different colors can be prepared to

represent things, such as those indicated below:

Red- sexual love, strength, high energy

Pink- affectionate love, friendships

orange-openness, flexibility, communication

Yellow-confidence, charm, happiness

Green- money, fertility, propersity

Blue- patience, health, loyality

Purple- ambition, power, wisdom

Once you have chosen the appropriate candle, you will need to prepare it.

First you may wish to choose a compatible oil, such as patchouli oil for a red

candle for love, rub the oil into the candle. Choose oils that associate with

the purpose. If in doubt, use a neutral oil, such as olive oil, or almond

oil. This is called anointing the candle. In certain trads, the candle must be

rubbed from the center outward while concentrating on intent and desire.

The candle may also have its purpose carved into it, whether in theban

alphabet, or runes. Set up your circle, and place the candle onto a safe place.

During the circle focus on you will, look into the flame and see the successful

outcome of your will. Pour this energy into the candle. At this stage you can

either extinguish the candle or leave it burn itself out. if you extinguish

the candle before closing the circle, you can watch the smoke rise from the

wick and imagine your spell is becoming real and already changing energies

according to your will.

-------- ----------- ------------

TO FIND YOUR SOUL MATE

OR TRUE LOVE

Tools you will need are:

Protection Incense (herbs or oils work fine also)

Red 8" Taper Candle

This is a 3 day spell, and it is best to find a work

area that you can leave untouched for three days. If

you must put away your tools, try to at least keep

your spell candle out in the open. This spell can be

used for the type of the person you want to attract.

It is never recommended to direct a love spell towards

a specific individual. You may choose a fictitious

name for the type of person you want to attract to

make this spell easier.

Just prior to your work, bathe in purification herbs.

While you are bathing, concentrate again on the

purpose of your spell. Again, do not let negative

thoughts enter your mind. After bathing, go to your

work area. Light some incense and cast your circle.

Envision a large, pink ball of light surrounding you

and your work area. Hold the candle between the palms

of your hands and direct all of your energy into the

candle. Place the candle in its candle holder. Prior

to lighting the candle, say (either aloud, or to

yourself):

"This candle represents the love between (your name)

and (fictitious name of intended lover)."

Light the candle and say (either aloud or to

yourself):

"As I light this candle, the love between my intended

lover and me grows strong.

Our love is such, that all feels the attraction

. As this candle burns, it draws us ever near.

Powerful is the persuasion! (Intended lovers name)'s

days are long and filled with yearning for me.

(Intended lovers name)'s

nights are long and filled with desire for me.

To be as one, together, is all that (name) would wish.

To be as one, forever is (name)'s immediate need.

For no rest shall she/he find, until she/he is by my

side!"

Sit and meditate and concentrate on your intended

lover and the desire that person has for you.

Concentrate on your desire for your lover. When the

candle has burned 1/3 of the way, say

"My lover will come to me" and blow out the candle.

Repeat this for two more nights. Your desire will come

to you.

To Rid your Home of Unhappy Energy

Body: To Rid your Home of Unhappy Energy

It's best to do this spell on the first day of a waning moon.

You will need:

* 1 old brick

* angelica shavings

* salt

* a chalice of cold water

Place the brick in a hot oven for a few minutes until warmed through

and hot to the touch. Take the brick out, using oven gloves or

similar, and place the shredded angelica on top with the salt. Using

the chalice, sprinkle the cold water over the top of the brick until

steam rises and chant 7 times,

'I call on the Eye of Horus to protect this home, invasion of evil

be gone to none'.

When the brick has cooled, place it in front of your house and leave

it there as a warning to any other unhappy or negative energy that

thinks about coming in.

Making Love, Pagan Style

This comes from Necromance arch' Angel.

First, prepare the room where you and your partner will be. Light candles and incense to cleanse the air, soft music to ease the spirit, and flower petals covering the bed or the area you wish to come together, to bring that feel of nature as well as yourselves back to the simple elements of life and love. This will be your sacred space.

Begin by showering together, washing one another to cleanse away the elements of lovers past, so that all is fresh and new. Next, hold one another and focus on the person, allowing your energy, the essence of you to go into them and they into you, so they will feel you totally. As you make love you will have a truly mental, physical and spiritual experience with the person you want to share yourself with.

Summer Invocation

Summer Invocation

For the little children to participate in the Litha ritual, have

them call quarters!

Fireflies and summer sun

in circles round we become as one

Singing songs at magick's hour

we bring the winds

and timeless powers

Turning inward, hand in hand Chant While Sun is Setting

we dance the hearth Hail fair Sun

to heal the land Ruler of the day;

Rise on the morn

Standing silent beneath the sky To light my way.

we catch the fire

from our God's eye Chant While Moon Gazing

Hail fair Moon

Swaying breathless, beside the sea Ruler of the night;

we call the Goddess Guard me and mine

So mote it be!

History of Paganism 101: The Roots of Nature Spirituality

©1997 Celtic Traditionalist Order of Druids

Long before recorded history, humans lived (out of necessity) much closer to the natural cycles. It is out of this affinity with nature that humans first began to personify the inherent energies of the land as individual Gods and Goddesses. In this manner, the ancients attempted to make sense of what must often have been a very illogical universe. The earliest peoples would have practiced a lifestyle very closely tied to the cycles of hunting and gathering (for obvious reasons, anthropologists refer to them as "hunter-gatherers").

Some research supports the theory that the most ancient formalized religion was one of ancestor worship. During those periods just after the beginnings of recorded history, we see evidence, which points towards this conclusion. The earliest evidence of pre-Christian Roman culture indicates that the Romans practiced some forms of ancestor worship. Early Roman culture borrowed extensively from the Etruscans; in fact many scholars accept that the Etruscan culture had an enormous impact on the civilizations of their time. Etruscan pottery has been found in excavations throughout the "Roman Empire", even as distant as Britain.

In addition to the reverence placed on the ancestors of a tribe or clan, the role of women appears to have remained significant. Long before the advent of patriarchal societies, an individual's family ties were determined by the line of descent from the mother's side. Some cultures still determine descent in this manner, however they are now greatly in the minority. The patriarchal lineage appears to have its strongest foothold in warrior societies or their offshoots. As the Celts had strong warrior women, it is decidedly unclear if patriarchy is the cause or result of such societies.

Eventually, the hunter-gatherer societies changed. Their pastoral culture slowly transformed either by natural evolution of by force, into an agrarian one. This culture was delineated less by the cycles of the hunat, and more by the ability to sow and reap the corps of the field. Several clans may have settled in a single area, and by developing more specialized functions became a small village. Gods and Goddesses of the forest and the wild places slowly began to be passed by and occasionally forgotten: their places userped by those of field or cattle and flocks. As these areas grew from village to towns and larger urban areas, so the Gods and Goddesses changed. "New" deities appear on the scene and new aspects of the Older Gods emerge: smithcraft, milling, and the like needed patrons to oversee them. In the East, and in other lands, many bands still clung to nomadic ways. Others still, spent some or all of their energies on the process of war. The divine spirits of these warrior bands appear to be almost exclusively male. Within those societies, it became the physiological strength of the male, which is of prime importance. As these bands grew and conquered others, so their patriarchal views of the order of things began to spread.

History is written by the conquerors, and re-written by the next one. So too, is religion. As the patriarchal bands, and later, patriarchal cultures, conquered and expanded their territories, so they re-wrote the histories and practices of the peoples they conquered. Several fine examples of this have much later dates in history:

The subjugation of the Native American civilizations by the invading European cultures.

The oppression of culture and religious beliefs in India and Pakistan under the British Raj

The oppression of the Tibetan Budhists by the Chinese.

The totalitarian regimes of many different eras and countries

The ongoing "troubles" in Northern Ireland.

Sometimes, a culture or people will resist. This resistance may be covert or overt in nature. Many traditional Celtic ways were once forbidden, such as bagpipes and the Celtic languages themselves. In more modern times, these pieces of culture are appreciated and treasured. Truly, one small battle won.

Historically, the Celts themselves were conquerors of the lands we now see as "Celtic"> In truth, there is not a surviving culture that wasn't at least partly warlike in its history. The Celts that we are so familiar with, those of the islands of Britain, are said by some to be descended from a cultural entity known as the Indo-Europeans. These people may have originated in the areas of the Northern Indian sub-continent. Their migrations north and westward contributed to the cultures we are now familiar with in India, the Iberian Peninsula, and the British Isles. It is probable that the contributions to these cultures were actually userptions by way of conquering other tribes along the way, however there is little hard evidence to prove any single theory. What we do have are many cultural similarities ranging from the Brahmin of India to the Druids of Northern Europe; from the intricate Knotwork patterns of the insular Celts to the key designs of the Greeks and the Minoans.

The History of Paganism

(Beware: this is the long version, beginning not at Gardner but at the ancient times.)

Paganism is actually a very ancient religion; however, since so few historical texts have been found intact and few can be translated, modern Pagans have been forced to essentially reconstruct the ancient religions to the best of their ability.

Some of the oldest examples of Paganism are the statues of motherly figures, with ample figures, that demonstrate the Mother aspect that would have been primarily important to the early people. These statues, from a very early time period (35,000-10, 000, b.c) have been found all over Europe. The Venus of Willendorf, or Willendorf Goddess, is a commonly used example.

Palaeolithic cave art seems to suggest that the early peoples painted the animals in a way connected with hunting--perhaps to draw the animals' spirits to the hunters, to ensure a good hunt. This is likely a form of sympathetic magic.

About 80,000 years ago, still in the Palaeolithic period, burials appeared--burials, the mark of the human species. While burials do not neccessarily mean a religion, thy do indicate a belief in the afterlife. One sixth of known burials of the Palaeolithic times were sprinkled with red ochre, and ornaments have been found in conjunction with the burials.

Moving on to the Neolithic time period, we find the henges: archaelological sites that seem to have more of a spiritual purpose than functional. Henges seem to be a phenomonon confined to Britain, and does not appear to have reached the main land. One of the most famous of the henges is Stonehenge, which stand in the middle of Salisbury Plain, in the chalk upland of Wiltshire. Stonehenge was actually built over a long time period, not just the period in which it originated (the Middle Neolithic). Henges are not necessarily the same as stone circles. Henges, as is said above, are those sites which appear to be more spiritual than functional.

Celtic trads are probably some of the most common today; it is nearly impossible not to come into contact with at least one person or group with Celtic associations when you are a pagan. However, the Celts are one of those peoples who left few actual records behind them, and much of the current traditions have had to build onto the somewhat scanty knowledge concerning the Celts.

The Celts had many gods/goddesses; there are records of over 400 deities, at least 300 of whom are only mentioned once. Thus, it is hard to tell if the Celts regarded the deities as seperate, or as aspects of one whole. Many of the deities are very much localized, distinct to one region or another. They had a strong belief in the afterlife, at least; archaeological information supports that fact.

One of the divisions of the Celts was the Druids, who lived in communities that seem to have been mostly male and intellectual. There is little available information on the Druids, regrettably; and some of what is available is from unreliable sources, the Druids' enemies.

In the category of classical religions fall the Romans and the Greeks. These peoples believed that one must pay homage to all the gods, not merely the ones whose attributes you most wanted, because if you neglected a god or goddess, you would miss out on that aspect of life they represented.

As the Romans did not have an insular religion when they conquered the Greeks, they essentially took over the Greek pantheon. The only Roman god who does not have a Greek counterpart is Janus, a creation god. The Romans did have several myths and legends that were their own, but unlike the Greeks (who mainly used myths to provide an example for the ideal of human behavior) the Romans preffered myths that glorified heroism, bravery, and duty. Both pantheons were very polytheistic (believing in more than one deity) in nature.

The Egyptians were extremely polytheistic; they had hundreds or thousands of gods and goddesses. The main Egyptian deities were Isis and Osiris, along with Horus. Isis was the creation goddess; she was the wife of Osiris, who was tricked and killed by his evil brother Set/Seth. Isis brought Osiris back to life long enough to conceive their son, Horus, falcon-headed god of the sun. After Osisris died, he became the God of the Dead and is commonly pictured as a mummy.

Another important set of goddesses were the four sisters: Isis (who was probably the most important Egyptian deity), Nephthys, Selket (goddess of scorpians), and Neith (goddess of night). These are the four sisters who are depicted in Tutankamen's tomb, guarding the four corners of his sarcauphagus (outer coffin).

In the Middle Ages, Christianity reigned and Paganism went into hiding. However, it was revived in the 1800s and 1900s, becoming what is Paganism today. Gerald Gardner is often regarded as the father of modern Paganism; however, there is an argument that Aliester Crowley was the father of modern Paganism. While there is little doubt that Crowley did have a major impact on modern Paganism, I tend to suscribe to the theory that Gardner was in fact the founder of Wicca.

When the last of the anti-Witchcraft laws were repealed around the 1940s, Gardner published books that were openely about Paganism, thus beginning the revival of Paganism in England. It spread to the states, notably aided by Buckland and his wife, Rosemary, who had been initiated by Gardner. Since then, Paganism has continued to be one of the fastest-growing religions in the United States, and many other places--Australia, for example--have a high Pagan content.

Money Spell

On the first day after the New Moon set up your altar with your consecrated tools, cast a consecrated circle and begin to build a cone of power. Take a Green candle, anoint it with money drawing oil or fast luck oil, light money drawing, success or fast luck incense, then scratch your name into the candle with a pin. On a white piece of paper write down your needs and desires with green ink. When you are done put the piece of paper under the candle holder. Light the candle and sit quietly while concentrating on your needs. When you are done put out the candle. Continue this for seven days. At the end of 7 days put a silver coin and the paper anointed with oil in a mojo bag with money drawing herbs. Carry the bag around with you. Dispose of the candle remnants in the "proper" magickal guidelines.

Midsummer Traditions

Midsummer Traditions

Midsummer has always been a time for celebration and dancing.

Traditionally, there were bonfires to celebrate the Sun. The

bonfires were believed to have the power to burn away all negativity

and evil. People jumped the flames, much as they had at Beltane,

making wishes. It was believed that the summer grains would grow

only as high as they were able to jump. The Celts built their

bonfires near holy wells or on a border or boundary of some sort

because they considered borders to be magickal entrances to the

Underworld. In some places, people light fires on midsummer eve.

They stay up until midnight to welcome in midsummer day, and, when

the fires die down, men run or jump through the embers to bring good

luck.

Ancient Pagans had a custom for Midsummer which consisted of

wrapping straw around the wheel of a cart, lighting it on fire, and

then rolling it down a tall hill. These flaming wheels were

called "Catherine Wheels" and they emulated the action of the sun,

which would begin waning after Midsummer day. If the fire went out

before the wheel got to the bottom of the hill, it indicated a good

harvest.

Since Midsummer is both a time of protection and of divination, in

ancient times, the rootstock of a male fern plant was trimmed into

the likeness of a hand and smoked in the Midsummer fires.

These 'Hands of Glory' were hung in houses for protection. It was

said that if the hands glowed with a blue flame, they were revealing

hidden treasure in the earth.

There is still a famous summer solstice celebration at Stonehenge,

the ancient stone circle on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. On the

night before midsummer, a group of white-robed Druids gather at

Stonehenge to watch the sun rising. As it comes up, the sun rises

exactly over the Heel Stone, one of the stones that lies outside the

main circle at Stonehenge.

Many midsummer celebrations were moved to the feast of St John the

Baptist (24th June). But since Midsummer was a time of magic and

wonder-working, evil spirits were said to appear, and people

gathered herbs and flowers to protect themselves. One of the most

powerful was the plant known as 'chase-devil', which we now call St

John's Wort. People used it in potions, and wove the flowers into

garlands to decorate their houses or protect their farm animals.

They believed that the herb could shield them from the power of evil

spirits and could help them foretell the future.

Each full Moon of the month has its own name

01:38 Jun 15 2006
Times Read: 644

Each full Moon of the month has its own name

Each full Moon of the month has its own name and its own qualities. Because Wicca draws from a number of folkloric traditions, you will probably see different names assigned to different months. Below are the common names for each month as well as what type of magick is best for that month.

January: Wolf Moon

The Wolf Moon, also known as the Cold, Snow, or Winter Moon, is a time of protection and strength. While it is the first full Moon of the calendar year, in terms of nature it occurs in the middle of the cold winter season, a season of death and desolation. In these respects, the Wolf Moon can be seen as a time of both beginnings and endings. This is the time to start to consider what you want to plant and plan for the spring. You can do magick so that as the spring approaches your magickal goal will grow close and closer to fruition.

February: Storm Moon

The Storm Moon, also known as the Death or Quickening Moon, is a time to do magick for fertility and strength. For most people in the Northern Hemisphere, February is a time of storms and bleak, short days. In the olden days, it was a time of true hardship.

This is a good time to do magick to help you face life's challenges. You could do a spell to help you with a particularly challenging project at work. Your spell could focus on helping you to accept the challenge, perservere, and make it through. You could concentrate on the idea of weathering the storm and giving yourself the extra stamina to succeed. This is also a time of cleansing both internally and externally. As such, it's a great time to get rid of physical things you don't need and any mental or emotional baggage you might be hauling around with you, too.

March: Chaste Moon

Also known as the Seed or Worm Moon, the Chaste Moon is a time to plant mental seeds - thoughts of success and hope. This is also a time of purity and newness. It's the time to bless the magickal herbs and plants in your garden and to start preparing the soil for the seeds that you will plant. It's also the time to mentally prepare yourself for new experieces, a new job, pregnancy, taking a trip, or bringing a new animal into your home.

April: Seed Moon

The Seed Moon signals a time of fertility, growth, and wisdom. This Moon is also known as the Egg, Grass, or Wind Moon. This is the time to sow the seeds of Magick. If you are planting a magickal garden, you want to get out there now and put things into the Earth. This is the time to move from the planning phase into action. If you want to get pregnant, this is a great time to go for it. Fertility is in the air. This is also the time to bring that new puppy home, it that is what you have been planning. It's also a great time to empower some seeds to both help them grow and to do Earth magick.

May: Hare Moon

The Hare Moon, also known as the Flower or Planting Moon, is a time of health, love, romance, and wisdom. This is a great time to plant the seeds that you have empowered. As the seeds begin to grow, the energy you have filled them with will start to manifest in your life. It's also a great time to rekindle the romantic spark and passion in a relationship. If you've been working magick to help your career, now will probably be the time to decide which of your job offers to accept. And you might want to do some divination magick to help you make that decision.

June: Lover's Moon

Also known as the Strawberry or Rose Moon, the Lover's Moon brings with it energy for love, marriage, and success. Is it any wonder that in some traditions this Moon is called the Honey Moon? This is a time to nurture your garden and marvel at its beauty and abundance. If you have taken that new job, now is the time to make sure you have everything running smoothly. And you might want to keep your eyes open to see how you can move into a more desirable position.

July: Mead Moon

The Mead Moon, also known as the Blessings, Lightning, or Thunder Moon, is a time of enchantment, health, rebirth, success, and strength. This is the time of the first harvests, when you begin to enjoy the fruits of your labors. This is also a time of celebration and magick. Remember that mead is the nectar of the Gods. Now is the time to gather your magickal herbs and do some prosperity magick so you get that raise you've worked so hard for.

August: Wyrt Moon

The Wyrt Moon, also known as the Wort, Barley, Corn, or Red Moon, is a time of abundance, agriculture, and marriage. This is the time to collect your magickal herbs and store them for the winter or share them with others. Remember to give an offering back to the Goddess for her generosity. At this time of the year, you might want to do magick to help someone else reap the benefits of the Earth's abundance. (With that person's permission, of course!) This is also a good time to make a move at work for that higher level position. If you have become pregnant, this is the time to concentrate your energies on having a healthy pregnancy.

September: Harvest Moon

Also known as the Barley or Hunter's Moon, the Harvest Moon is a time of protection, prosperity, and abundance. This is the time of year when the grains are being harvested, and it is a good time for magick involving your prosperity, abundance, and the nurturing of others. If you have had a long illness, this is the time to finally come back to full health again. This is also the time to obtain that higher paying position at work. The energy of the Harvest Moon will help along any magick that is geared to bring you or someone else abundance.

October: Blood Moon

The Blood Moon is sometimes called the Falling Leaf or Hunter's Moon. It is a Moon of new goals, potection, resolution, and spirituality. The night of the Blood Moon is a great time for divination of any kind. At this time of the year, all of nature is making ready for the winter. Animals that hibernate are gathering the last scraps of food. Birds are heading south. In human societies, this used to be the time when we turned from agriculture to the hunt as our means of sustenance. This is the time to refect on what you did during the year and to evaluate your accomplishments.

You also want to check to see how you will survive the coming months. Make sure that you have enough money in the bank. If your work is seasonal, you might want to do some magick to find other ways to support yourself. If you work outdoors, do magick to help you survive the cold months ahead. You also want to check on things that are important to your safety and survival. How are the tires on your car? And what about that smoke alarm in the kitchen? Because the holidays are fast approaching, you also might want to do some work to remove stress and negative energy from your surroundings.

Novemeber: Snow Moon

The Snow Moon is also known as the Beaver, Mourning, or Tree Moon. This is a good time to work with abundance, properity, and the bonds of family and friendship. This is also an excellent time to use divination to get an idea of what is up ahead. Remind yourself that although winter is coming, it will not last forever. Do what you can to reduce your stress and to strengthen your bonds with family and friends. Back before the advent of grocery stores and central heating, people really counted on those bonds, which could be the difference between making it through the winter or perishing. So, know who is really there for you, and count your blessings.

December: Oak Moon

Also known as the Cold or Long Night Moon, the Oak Moon is a time for hope and healing. This time of year the Moon has reign over the Earth, because there are more hours of night than day. Our thoughts turn to the rebirth of the light and the longer days that are promised after the winter solstice. Women who have become pregnant in the spring are about to give birth and will probably want to focus their energies on delivering a healthy baby. This is the time of year to complete something you have worked hard on and to make sure that the task is truly completed, all the details dealt with. It's also a great time to let go of old patterns or problems and start anew. If something has been eating at you for a long time, work to give it up at this time. Let go of the negative and let the light of longer days shine inside you. Working with children in a nurturing way can be very rewarding and healing.

Midsummer Magic and Divination

20:18 Jun 14 2006

Midsummer Magic and Divination

by Anna Franklin

Midsummer is a day of very potent magic, a time when the otherworld

is close, and it is possible to see into the future.

In the past, a wide variety of Midsummer divination techniques were

employed by country people. In fact, many of these techniques are

employed even today--farmers view the weather on the solstice as a

potential indicator of the bounty of the harvest. Rains on this day

indicate a poor and wet grain harvest, but a large crop of apples

and pears.

Midsummer Love Divination

In bygone days, young girls would take the opportunity on the Summer

Solstice to perform various acts of divination, usually to discover

whom they would marry. You might like to try some of these yourself--

after all, you don't have to be a young girl to be interested in

potential lovers. But be forewarned, some of these techniques are

pretty scary, designed to conjure up an appartition of the lover

rather than a rosy-cheeked warm-blooded person.

At midnight on St. John's Eve, walk seven times sunwise around a

church, scattering hempseed and saying, "Hempseed I sow. Hempseed I

sow. Let the one that is my true love come after me and mow." When

you've completed the circuits, look over your left shoulder to see

your true love coming after you--with a scythe in hand.

On Midsummer Eve, meanwhile, take off your shift and wash it, then

turn it inside out and hang it over the back of a chair near the

fire. Do it all in silence, and you will see your future husband at

midnight, intent on turning the shift right side out.

You can also test on Midsummer Eve whether a partner returns your

love. Follow this ancient Roman method of divination: Eat an apple

and save back one pip, which you will address with your lover's

name. Flick the pip from your finger with your thumb nail--if it

hits the ceiling then your love is returned.

Daisies are assocated with faithful love, and are sacred to the love

goddesses Venus, Aphrodite, and Freya. Their folk name "measure of

love" comes from the following charm. To find out whether someone

loves you, take a daisy and pull of the petals one by one, saying

alternately after each: "He loves me. He loves me not." The final

petal will give you the answer.

To discover when you will marry, find a meadow or lawn where daisies

grow. Close your eyes and pull up a handful of grass. The number of

daisies in the handful is the number of unmarried years remaining to

you.

One Welsh method of divination called ffatio involves washing

clothes at midnight in a well while chanting: Sawl ddaw I gyd-fydio,

doed I gyd-ffatio ("He who would my partner be, let him come and

wash with me"). The lover will then appear to help with the laundry.

Finally, to find your husband, fast on Midsummer Eve till midnight,

then spread a supper of bread, cheese, and ale on a clean cloth.

Leave the front door wide open. Your future husband will enter the

room, drink a glass of ale, bow, and leave.

Or it might be a burglar, you never know

Magick Mirror Beauty Spell

20:17 Jun 14 2006
Times Read: 646

Magick Mirror Beauty Spell

You will need 1 small, handheld mirror, 3 candles, rose oil, patchouli incense and a little privacy.

Select one color for the strongest effect, or mix and match to get a bit of each:

Red if you are going for sex appeal

Silver if you want to be the center of attention and display star-quality charisma

Orange if you are going for general attractiveness and likeability.

On a night when the moon is full, find a secluded outdoor spot. Light your incense and your three candles. Disrobe and anoint the parts of your body you would like to change with the rose oil. For example, if you think your feet are too big, anoint the tops of each foot. If you are going for an all over make-over, then anoint your forehead, your breast bone, the center of your belly, each wrist and behind each knee. Pass the mirror through the smoke of the incense, then raise it over your head, reflective surface facing the moon.

Recite:

Wood and Wind, Ember and Mist

Grant your blessed child's wish

Sacred Mother charge this mirror

Let your light make beauty clearer

Wrap it in your gentle glow

So that tis all it ever shows.

Lower the mirror and gaze into it. Visualize the way you wish to look, and how you want others to see and react to you. Repeat the following:

As a blossom in your glade

Let my beauty never fade.

Now, use the mirror's reflective surface to shine the moonlight on the place(s) you would like to make more pleasing to the eye. When you are done, wrap the mirror in a dark cloth and keep it safe. If the mirror is ever broken, so also will be the spell. Snuff the candles, dress and let the incense burn out.

For an extra boost, like before a big date, business meeting or audition, annoint yourself again with rose oil and spend 10 minutes gazing into the mirror. While doing so, focus on the things you find attractive about yourself and the things you want others to see when they look at you

Summer Solstice Info and Ritual

20:15 Jun 14 2006
Times Read: 647

Summer Solstice Info and Ritual

SPECIAL NOTES: The Summer Solstice and the official first

day of summer. Called Midsummer or Litha, the day usually falls about June 21st and is the longest day of the year. Midsummer is halfway around the Wheel Year from Yule, so while we celebrate the day when the sun is at its strongest, we also have to note that from here on, the sun will start to lose some of its power as the light slowly begins to wane.

Midsummer Eve has long been associated with faeries and magic. On this night you're supposed to be able to see faeries, as the veil between the worlds is thinned. In ancient times our ancestors went out to gather their mugwort on Midsummer Eve. Interestingly enough mugwort was also called St John's Wort, in an attempt to dilute the Pagan influence. Is it a coincidence that St John the Baptist's Day was placed at June 23rd? Probably not.

Our children especially look forward to this ritual because not only does it coincide with the start of their summer vacation, it's also usually our first picnic of the year. We head to a local campground because there are safe places to build campfires and there's usually no one else nearby. We try to plan things to be set up by high noon, so we can greet the sun at the highest point in it's daily cycle on the day of the highest point in it's yearly cycle. As always, if you can take the kids outdoors to do this one, great! If not, just adjust things so they fit best for you. Remember, it's not *how* you do it that matters, but just that you do it!!

This ritual involves making a mini-bonfire. This can be a campfire, your barbecue (those table top ones that can be placed on the ground) or a single candle. If you're lucky enough to be able to do this outdoors, make sure you take precautions. If you're having any kind of fire, large or small, be sure to bring a jug of water to put the fire out afterwards, or to quench any sparks that might get away from you. And please make sure you exercise EXTREME CAUTION so this special day doesn't end with burned fingers or a fire.

EXTRA SUPPLIES: Kindling for your bonfire (or charcoal or candles, whatever you choose.) Matches to light the bonfire. An aspergill, which is something you dip in water that will allow you to sprinkle or anoint the fire...a leafy branch works just fine. A container of water to dip your aspergill in (if you have a small cauldron that would be perfect). The bell and quarter candles are included here for those who choose to do this ritual indoors. If you're going to be outside, make it easy on yourself and skip the quarter candles. You're one with nature, so it should be easy for the kids to connect with Earth, Air, Fire and Water whether they have the candles or not.

Begin your ritual by ringing the bell to establish Sacred Space. The child chosen to be Bell Ringer rings the bell three times and says:

"I ring the bell

To cast the spell

Let sacred time begin

1 - 2 - 3

So mote it be

Let sacred time begin."

Then an Adult casts the Circle by saying:

"Great Mother,

Weave around us

A circle of radiant light

Where we can honor

Our Lord and Lady.

Protect us, guide us and love us."

Tell the kids to imagine a silvery-blue light surrounding the table to create a Circle. Explain that this "Circle of Light" means we want to make this a sacred place to honor the Goddess and God. Explain that a Sacred Place doesn't have to be a church. It can be in your dining room, a special spot in the forest, or even at school, as long as you show the respect and honor the Goddess and God deserve by creating your Sacred Space first. Next we "Call the Quarters." Explain that this is asking the Ancient Ones to add their powers to ours to make our Circle stronger. Because we do this outside (and you don't want to have too many fires lit!) we pass on the candle lighting and just have the children invoke the elements verbally.

It's a great chance to actually connect with calling the Elements! The child chosen to call the Eastern Quarter faces the East, raises his/her hands and says:

"I call to you

Ancient Ones of the East

Guardian Spirits of Air

To witness this ritual and guard this Circle."

The child chosen to call the Southern Quarter faces South, raises his/her hands and says:

"I call to you

Ancient Ones of the South

Guardian Sprits of Fire

To witness this ritual and guard this Circle."

The child chosen to call the Western Quarter faces West, raises

his/her hands and says:

"I call to you

Ancient Ones of the West

Guardian Spirits of Water

To Witness this ritual and guard this Circle."

The child chosen to call the Northern Quarter faces North, raises their hands and says:

"I call to you

Ancient Ones of the North

Guardian Spirits of Earth

To witness this ritual and guard this Circle."

Then the Adult says:

"The Circle has been cast

The Ancient Ones have been called

Now it is time to welcome

The Goddess and the God.

Great Mother,

Whose symbol is the bright night moon,

Heavenly father,

Whose symbol is the fiery sun,

We ask you to join our family

For this Midsummer Celebration."

The adult stands and faces the sun, raising his arms in joyous welcome:

"We greet the sun

At the zenith of its journey

On this day when it rides high in the sky!

Today is the celebration of Midsummer,

The Summer Solstice!

It is the longest day of the year

A day when light rules over dark!

Feel the power of the sun

And rejoice in its light and warmth!!"

Have the children face the sun and, closing their eyes, feel its

warmth on their face. Explain to them that the warmth they're feeling has traveled about 93 million miles through space to reach them today. That's 400 times farther from the Earth than the moon is! And yet, even at that distance, we can still feel it! Now *that's* magickal! To our ancestors, the sun was a God. They couldn't understand how it moved across the sky, but they knew their lives depended on it. Today, even though we know a lot about the sun, and that it's a star and not a God, we do acknowledge it's strength and power, and admit that without it, all life on Earth⦠the people, plants and animals...would cease to exist. Now the adult turns to the

bonfire (barbecue, candle or whatever) and says:

"Since Yule the power of the light has been growing stronger.

At Ostara the light was equal to the dark .

Today the turning of the Wheel Year has brought us to Midsummer,

A day when the light rules supreme!

Light the fire, letting the flames burn for a minute before

continuing:

"We celebrate the Summer Solstice

With this fire in honor of the Sun.

Burn brightly, Sun!

Summer has begun!! "

Have each person around the Circle take up the chant:

"Burn brightly Sun!

Summer has begun!"

You can go around once, or, if the kids are having fun, go around a couple of times! When the flames have died down everyone can take a turn jumping over the bonfire to make a wish. Be *very* careful! We make a *very* small bonfire so there's no great risk, but we still hold the hand of the smaller children when they jump just be sure. Explain that fires were associated with purification, fertility and blessings. Tell them about the traditions of our ancestors, like lighting giant bonfires on the hilltops. It was sympathetic magick to call on the power of the sun. Another was to set fire to a wheel made

of dried grass and send it rolling down a hill and into a pond. The fire represented the power of the sun, and the water quenching the flames symbolized the farmer's wishes that summer wouldn't be *too* hot and cause a drought or destroy the crops. Along these lines get your container of water and aspergill and return to your fire. Have the adult say:

"We love the warmth of the Summer Sun

We love its light and radiant heat.

But just as important to the earth Is the gift of rain Rain to fill our reservoirs, Rain to water the plants and crops, Rain to cool us."

Dip the leafy branch into the water and sprinkle it like raindrops on the fire saying:

"Not too hot, not too dry

May the summer rains

Keep the Earth green."

Now invite everyone else to take up a branch and sprinkle the fire, repeating the chant until the fire is out.

"May the Summer rains

Keep the Earth green!"

When that's finished have everyone sit down. The adult says:

"Summer has come again!

We celebrate the sunshine,

The freedom from school,

The long hot days to swim and play!

Lord and Lady,

Watch over your children

And keep us safe

During these busy Summer months!"

When everyone is finished you can close the Circle. Explain to the children that the ritual is over. Now it is time to thank the Ancient Ones for their help and their guidance. The child who called the Eastern Quarter now says:

"Thank you and farewell

Ancient Ones of the East

Guardian Spirits of Air

Go in Peace."

The child who called the Southern Quarter now says:

"Thank you and farewell

Ancient Ones of the South

Guardian Spirits of Fire

Go in Peace."

The child who called the Western Quarter says:

"Thank you and farewell

Ancient Ones of the West

Guardian Spirits of Water

Go in Peace."

The child who called the Northern Quarter says:

"Thank you and farewell

Ancient Ones of the North

Guardian Spirits of Earth

Go in Peace."

Then the Adult says farewell to the Goddess and the God:

"We thank you God and Goddess

For sharing this special time

With our family.

May we keep you in our hearts,

And follow your path of love

Every day.

Blessed be!"

Now the Bell Ringer rings the bell three times to release the Sacred Space and says:

"I ring the bell,

Release the spell

And Sacred Time will end.

1 - 2 - 3

So mote it be,

Until we meet again."

Explain that this is the signal that Scared Time is over. The Circle has been released and the Sacred Space is no more. Now the Adult says:

"The Circle is open

And yet it remains a Circle.

Around and through us

Always flow its magical powers.

This ritual is over."

THE SEVEN DAYS OF SPELLS

20:13 Jun 14 2006
Times Read: 648

THE SEVEN DAYS OF SPELLS

Have you ever wondered why certain days of the week have a particular feel to them? Sunday is a restful day with nothing much to do; Monday means back to work, usually with little energy to spare. Motivation runs high on Tuesday, and Wednesday is a day for communication, such as making arrangements for the coming weekend. Thursday expands on everything set in motion earlier in the week, Friday is traditionally known as "date night," and chores tend to get done on Saturday. The days of the week have a basic rhythm to them because each one is associated with a specific planet of our solar system. These are energies that we can use to our advantage, especially when it comes to spell-crafting.

The Planetary Days

There are two origins for a seven-day week. The first comes from the ancient Hebrews, who observed a day of rest and worship every seventh day--to commemorate the biblical creation myth in which God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. The other origin of the seven-day week stems from Astrology. Ancient astronomers were aware of only the five planets visible to the unaided eye: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, and Mercury. Persian astrologers, expanding on this knowledge, constructed a cycle of seven days--a day for each of the five planets, a day for the Sun, and a day for the Moon. Due to trade, conquest, and migration, the astrological week of seven days arrived in the Roman empire during the first century AD.

Later, around the early part of the third century AD, the Roman empire embraced Christianity as its main religion. As a result, the week observed by the Judeo-Christian tradition merged with the astrological seven-day week, and became part of Roman culture.

The Roman week retained its Pagan heritage in the base-words that became names of the days: Solis, Lunaea, Martis, Mercurii, Jovis, Veneris, and Saturni--for the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn, respectively. The English language is Germanic in origin, but these language groups borrowed many words and concepts from Latin and the Roman empire, and the words have evolved over time so that we now have Sun's day or Sunday, Saturn's day or Saturday, and Moon's day or Monday. The other days of the week are based on Pagan names as well--Norse equivalents to the Roman gods: Tyr's day or Tuesday, Wotan's day or Wednesday, Thor's day or Thursday, and Freya's day or Friday.

Consequently, each day has a special significance because it takes on the activity of the planetary energy ruling over it. Let's take a more in-depth look at the importance of the planetary days, their correspondences, and meanings.

Sunday

Sunday draws its energy from the primary luminary of our solar system--the Sun. The Sun represents self-awareness and individuality. The Sun's Day is a great time to enhance any project requiring creativity, artistry, gambling, and financial speculation. It is also a day to call on protection if you need it, as well as for resolving issues concerning children, matters of the heart, and for performing rituals concerning exorcism, healing, and prosperity.

Sign: Leo Metal: Gold

Gem: Diamond Colors: Orange, white

Incense: Lemon Deity: Sol

Monday

Monday receives empowerment from the Moon, whose light is a reflection of the Sun. The Moon symbolizes the instinctive mind that fluctuates and is easily influenced by external sources. It is peaceful, malleable, changeable, receptive, maternal, imaginative, and rather retiring, so Monday, unfortunately, isn't the best of days to start the workweek.

The Moon's day is the proper day of the week to perform spells involving agriculture, animals, female fertility, messages, reconciliation, and voyages, and a time to attend to all emotional and domestic affairs, including intimate concerns, secrets, old memories, the home, land, and real estate.

Sign: Cancer Metal: Silver

Gems: Pearl, opal Colors: Silver, gray

Incense: Willow Deity: Luna

Tuesday

Tuesday comes under the influence of Mars, the planet associated with vitality, passion, ambition, and raw, unabashed power. Mars energy makes the mind acute and the body restless; therefore, on Tuesday we are likely to exert ourselves physically and take action to achieve goals.

This day is dynamic and high-spirited, and the prevailing energies may include carelessness and destructiveness as well, so it is good to be cautious--especially while traveling. It is the right day of the week to perform rituals involving courage, physical strength, revenge, surgery, and the breaking of negative spells.

Sign: Aries, Scorpio Metal: Iron

Gems: Flint Colors: Red, orange

Incense: Patchouli Deity: Mars, Tyr

Wednesday

Mercury, the planet representing the conscious mind and communication, presides over Wednesday. It is a good day to think, but not necessarily a day to make decisions, as thoughts tend to be abstract and the mind may wander.

Wednesday is the right day of the week to perform spells and rituals involving communication, divination, writing, knowledge, teaching, learning, business transactions, study, meetings, announcements, phone calls, and planning.

Sign: Gemini, Virgo Metal: Quicksilver

Gems:Citrine Colors: Yellow, grey, violet Incense: Jasmine Deity: Mercury, Odin

Thursday

Jupiter expands our horizons on Thursday, granting us the ability to open our minds and hearts and make use of common sense. Today we are likely to be more optimistic, make sound decisions, and unlock the door to new opportunities that serve us well in terms of our spiritual growth and development.

Thursday is the right day of the week to perform spells involving luck, happiness, health, legal matters, male fertility, material wealth, the arts, social harmony, benevolence, and peace.

Sign: Sagittarius, Pisces Metal: Tin

Gems: Amethyst Colors: Blue, indigo

Incense: Cinnamon Deity: Jupiter, Thor

Friday

Venus, the planet of love and romance, presides over Friday. This is the best day to establish strong friendships and amorous liaisons because Venus rules the affections, and others are likely to be more responsive to you regarding matters of the heart. Art, music, fruitfulness, and nature also flourish today.

Friday is a good day of the week to perform spells involving love, romance, faithfulness, sex, marriage, friendships, partnerships, and environmental beautification.

Sign: Taurus, Libra Metal: Copper

Gems: Emerald Colors: Pink, aqua

Incense: Rose Deity: Venus, Freya

Saturday

Saturday shares Saturn's influence, directing our attention toward routine chores, customs, and conventional traditions. This day is good for furthering our ambitions through perseverance, patience, responsible action, and a sense of purpose.

Saturday is a good day of the week to perform spells and rituals involving spirit communication, meditation, psychic self-defense, binding, and locating lost things or missing persons.

Signs: Capricorn, Aquarius Metal: Lead

Gems: Garnet Colors: Black, gray, indigo

Incense: Myrrh Deity: Saturn, Loki

A Spell for Easing Grief or Sadness

20:06 Jun 14 2006
Times Read: 651

A Spell for Easing Grief or Sadness

Equipment

Any memorabilia which tends to powerfully evoke the sadness: letters, pictures, gifts, ect.; and an object which reminds you of some upcoming event which is likely to bring you pleasure(it can be a holiday month in the future, for example), blankets or pillows

The Spell

Sit while holding the memorabilia, and allow the feelings to come freely. Say aloud why you are sad. It's okay to cry, yell, or pound. Find a key phrase that expresses your grief and say it out loud, over and over. Now visualize yourself being held closely in the Mother Goddess, who rocks and comforts you. Swathe yourself in the blankets and pillows, and rock gently back and forth as you feel Her warm embrace. After awhile, look at the memorabilia again, and recall that in the circle, all time is now. What you once had, you always have in your heart, as long as you don't shut it out. What you were given was real, and helped mold your life, and can never be taken away as long as you remember and cherish it. Remember the good times, and when you are ready, thank the Lady reminds that you had them. Now bring out the object that reminds you of the coming event: a visit to a favorite friend or relative, a special holiday, or a conference that should be exciting. Remind yourself that life goes on, that is still much to look forward to: this is only a tiny sample of the good times ahead for you. Ask Her to heal your pain. Open the circle, and go visit a friend

Chants & Prayers

Chants & Prayers

Body: A Daily Chant

Earth and Sea

Keep harm from me.

Wind and Fire,

Bring my desire.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Prayer to Brigid

Dear Lady Brigid

Shining, Bright One

Goddess of Fire

Deity of Creativity

And Patroness of all Poets.

Guide me,

Bless me,

Light up my life with your divine intervention.

So mote it be.

Note: This is an all-purpose prayer that can be adapted for any particular God or Goddess you wish to commune with. Simply change the name and the traditional attributes. For example, see my Bast version below:

Dear Lady Bast

Shining, bright one

Goddess of Egypt

Deity of the moon

And Patroness of cats and women.

Guide me,

Bless me,

Light up my life with your divine intervention.

So mote it be.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chant to Beckon a Person

If you are turning towards me,

Know I turn also to you

And come to me in love.

If you are thinking of me,

Know I think also of you

And come to me in love.

If you are saying my name

Know I say your name also, and call you to me

And come to me in love.

Say the person's name 3 times.

Note: This chant can be used in a love spell. Notice the all-important "if" that keeps it from violating the Threefold. This chant would be good for determining whether or not a person has feelings for you. If they already like you, this chant will prod them to call you, ask you out, make their feelings known in some way. If they don't like you, however, nothing will happen. The "if" insures that.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Full Moon Chant

Full moon shining bright

Midnight on the water

Oh Aradia, queen of the skies and Diana's silver daughter

Full moon shining bright

Midnight on the water

Oh Aradia, queen of the skies and Diana's silver daughter.

Note: A good Esbat chant. It would probably be more effective with lots of people, though.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An Imbolc Chant

(use with candles of the appropriate colour)

Candle bright,

Burning Fire

Keep within you

Our Desire

Listen to

The Words we Speak

And Clear a Path

To What we Seek

Let our Wishes

All come True

As they Burn

This night with you.

Blessed be.

Note: To be used in your Imbolc ritual. As Imbolc is very much a festival of light, the use of candles is very appropriate.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Random Chant

Blessed be!

Be silent

Be stll

Resonate at will

Resonate within yourself

Feel the energy

Feel the wealth

Crystal heart

Love's mark

Radiant to All.

Colour spectrum

Divine light

Echoing it's call.

Trusting now

Flying wide

Reaching out within

Listen close

Ignore no more

For now is the time to begin.....

Note: This is basically just a chant to get you pumped for a spell or ritual.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another Moon Chant

Greeting to you, gem of the night!

Beauty of the skies, gem of the night!

Mother of the stars, gem of the night!

Foster-child of the sun, gem of the night!

Majesty of the stars, gem of the night!

Note: Another Esbat chant. I prefer this one. I find the repetition of "gem of the night" is very good for raising energy. It's also a nice way to begin your ritual, saluting the moon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Lady's Grace - A Prayer to Artemis

Goddess Artemis

Huntress of the night,

Embrace me in your passions

And speak to me of your mysteries.

Lead me softly through the briars of my mind,

Help me to be strong.

Show me the strength of your roses,

And the pleasures of the night.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Goddess Prayer for Truth and Wisdom

Goddess grant me the vision

To see beyond the illusions of this world.

Grant me ears to hear beyond the words

To the true meaning.

And grant me a voice in which I can speak

Truth and compassions

In your name.

So mote it be.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Writer's Prayer^

Gentle Goddess,

Guide me in this creative gift, that I may touch a soul.

Let me share beauty and horror, love and shame,

the many-faceted jewel of human achievement and failing

Loving Goddess,

Guide me in my thoughts, for the beings I create

are of me as I am of you.

Allow me to experience, on my own level,

that part of that is like you.

Sheltering Goddess,

Help me through my fears and insecurites,

that I may find my voice.

Send me the words locked in my mind to my fingers,

so I may spread their truth to the world.

Enduring Goddess,

Remind me often that the creative tree

rarely has one root and rarely spawns only one seed.

As my art has been influenced by those who have come before,

let me influence those who are yet to come.

But above all else......

Help me learn to appreciate and enjoy that which you have given me.

Help me see it as the gift that it truly is.

For this is who you have made me.

So mote it be.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Prayer Before Meals+

From forest and stream;

From mountain and field;

From the fertile Earth's

Nourishing yield;

I now partake of

Divine energy;

May it lend health,

Strength and love to me.

Blessed be.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Morning Prayer+

O Gracious Goddess

Glorious as the sun,

Lend me health, strength and love

During this coming day.

Assist me with the challenges ahead.

Share Your divine wisdom.

Teach me to respect all things.

And remind me that the greatest power of all

Is love.

Blessed be.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Prayer Before Sleep+

O Gracious Goddess

O Gracious God

I now enter the realm of dreams

Weave now, if You will, a web of protective light around me.

Guard both my sleeping form and my spirit.

Watch over me

Until the sun rises again.

O Gracious Goddess

O Gracious God

Be with me through the night.

Note: This beautiful Cunningham prayer is like the Wiccan "Now I Lay Me Down". Both prayers ask the Higher Powers for protection while they sleep. These prayers guard against two of the most basic and ancient of fears: the fear of the dark and the fear of death during sleep.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Prayer to Bast for Blessings*

Bless me Goddess Bast for I am your child.

Bless me with your love.

Grant me the softness of your fur.

Grant me the strength of your claws.

Grant me the wisdom of your eyes.

Grant me the humour in your tail.

Grant me the peacefulness in your sleep.

Grant me the love in your purr.

Note: Unlike most of the other prayers here, which can be adapted for whichever name and attributes you give to the Goddess, this is pretty much specific to Bast, the goddess of cats.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prayer for a Deceased Friend**

Beloved angel,

dearest friend.

You shared for my life

through good and bane.

Ever loving,

Ever giving.

You were my friend, my confidant,

my clown, my sage counsel.

You have gone on to the next incarnation,

The first thing we have not done together.

My heart grieves your passing.

I honor your life.

I give this gift to you

and infuse it with all my love.

I thank you for the priceless gift

of sharing your life with me.

I cherish your memory, dear one,

dearest [name here].

Note: This is an excellent Samhain prayer for anyone you care about that has passed on into the next incarnation. Perform with an offering of some sort.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hymn to Hestia

Come Hestia, to live in this beautiful home.

Come with warm feelings of friendship.

Bring your intelligence,

Your energy and your passion

To join with your good work.

Burn always in my soul.

You are always welcome here.

Blessed be.

Note: This is a prayer to Hestia, the Greek goddess of hearth (or Vesta, Roman Goddess of the Hearth, if you will) to bless your home and fill it with positive energies. Midsummer Eve Pillow Divinations

Body: On Midsummer Eve, various herbs and charms placed beneath your

pillow are capable of bringing prophetic dreams

To dream of an absent lover, daisy roots should be placed under the pillow

Place a piece of mugwort gathered on Midsummer Eve beneath your pillow for prophetic dreams.

Wrap a piece of wax in a stocking and place it under the pillow.

The next morning melt the wax and pour it into a vial of water to set

in the sun. It will harden into a shape that shows the occupation of your future husband.

Oak flowers on Midsummer Eve and withers before daybreak, it is said.

Spread a sheet beneath the tree and catch the blossoms.

Place them under your pillow and dream of your future lover.

According to old English lore, yarrow gathered from a young man's

grave and laid under the pillow on Misummer Eve will produce a vision of your husband-to-be

Placing ash leaves beneath the pillow results in prophetic dreams.

A laurel leaf placed beneath the pillow brings about prophetic dreams.

Betony placed beneath the pillow prevents nightmares, the elf sickness

inflicted by malicious fairies, and even drunkenness.

If you find a cinquefoil that has seven points (they usually have 5),

it should be placed under the pillow so that you can dream of your future partner.

Place a four-leaved clover under your pillow to dream of your perfect partner.

According to a norther English custom, a future spouse can be determined

by putting three holly leaves, named for three suitors and blessed in the name of the Trinity, under your pillow with the left hand.

The first leaf to have turned over in the morning would be the one.

Marigold petals placed under the pillow will give you prophetic

dreams and enable you to identify a thief or robber.

Mistletoe placed beneath the pillow is an aid to conception, and also

ensures a restful sleep and good dreams.

Placed under the pillow, rosemary ensures pleasant dreams and keeps evil away.

Sleeping with sage leaves under the pillow encourages prophetic dreams.

The Knotted Necklace

Times Read: 674

The Knotted Necklace

Items needed: Red embroidery thread.

Moon phase: Waxing, 5 days before full moon if possible.

Purpose: A lover's binding.

Action: Take three equal lengths of red embroidery thread and braid it into a choker necklace while thinking of your lover.

Tie five knots into the braided strand: one knot at each end of the braid to hold the braid in place; three knots in-between the two. Picture yourself and your lover embraced when you tie each knot.

Tie the necklace around your neck and wear for five days. If you are uncomfortable with adding this extra knot because it will be untied, then wax the ends of the necklace together so that you can wear it around your neck.

On the fifth day, you and your lover must come together in an embrace so that the necklace comes into physical contact with him or her.

Afterwards, remove the necklace at the back (do not undo the original five knots) and place the braided strand safely into your undies drawer.

Be extremely careful to never lose this braided strand. There may come a time when its power needs to be undone.

"What I made,

I now unmake.

Restore to order,

The spell now breaks."

Under the Mattress

What's under my mattress is secret. What's under my mattress is hidden. It may be a small treasure or a picture of some object that I would like to own. It could very well be a wish written on a slip of paper.

Whatever it is that is under my mattress, it is not for you to see.

Purpose: To save money for something special.

"What money is left

Goes safe into here

And under the mattress,

Safe and clear."

Place the envelope under your mattress where you sleep so that you are literally sleeping on your treasure at night.

Continue to tuck money into your treasure envelope until you have reached your goal

More Blessings

BLESSING Of FULL MOON WATER

This spell can be used on the Full Moon, to bless the Holy Water you have made

You can then save it and use to bless candles etc.

You will need ;

A bowl, jar or cup filled with the Holy Water made see previous post

Put a compact mirror or small miror in the Bowl so the moonlight

glints off it with the silvery light of the Goddess Say:

" Oh Great Ones ,

My Goddess and my God ,

I call upon you,

In need of your help,

Bless this water,

(Hold up small bowl of water.)

Bless this water,

With you power,

With you purification,

With you healing powers,

Bless this water,

Put bowl down. You have made Full Moon blessed water,

and you can now use the water for power, purification and healing.

Then say,

With the water you so blessed,

May this harm none,

The spell is done,

So mote it be and blessed be "

**The water is charged in the light of the full moon overnight**

WHITE CANDLE SPELL FOR BLESSING

Get a white candle -- either a plain one (offertory, pillar, or taper) or a figural one in the

gender of the person you want to bless. Carve the person's full name on the candle,

then dress it with Blessing Oil or Holy Oil. For more power, you may place a name-paper

of the person, or a photo, or some personal item of theirs (such as a bit of hair or a snippet

of clothing) either under the candle or next to it. One easy way to do this is to place the

paper or personal concerns under an overturned saucer and put the candle on top of the

saucer. Burn a portion of the candle every day for seven days, pinching it out between burnings.

As you light it each day, say this

[Name], may you be blessed

May all good things come to you

May nothing whatsoever harm you

May your heart be light

May your travels be safe

May your health be good

May your mind be sound

May your friendships sustain you

May you be blessed in every way

* If you have a special request for this person (such as that they find a lover, get a

good job, come home safely from a war, or whatever), just add it to the list.

Some people use a large pillar-type candle and keep it going for longer than seven days.

They may make a habit of burning such a candle every day -- or once a week, on Sundays --

for as long as their friend or relative needs help, even doing so for months at a time.

If the candle is large and it is to be burnedin this way, it should be re-dressed with

Blessing Oil or Holy Oil once a week: after the initial dressing, you can drop a tiny bit of

oil into the "well" or hole in such a large candle just before lighting it each time.

SELF-BLESSING RITUAL

This ritual should be performed during the new moon, but it is not limited to that phase.

Need, not season, determines the performance There is real power in the Self Blessing;

it should not be used other than in time of need and should not be done promiscuously.

The purpose of the ritual is to bring the individual into closer contact with the

Godhead /Goddess. It can also be used as a minor dedication, when a person who

desires dedication has no one who can dedicate him. This self-blessing ritual may also

be used as a minor exorcism, to banish any evil influences which may have formed

around the person. It may be performed by any person upon himself, and at his desire.

Perform the ritual in a quiet place, free from distractions, and nude.

You will need the following:

1. Salt, about one-quarter teaspoon. 2. Wine, about an ounce.

3. Water, about one-half ounce. 4. Candle, votive or other.

The result of the ritual is a feeling of peace and calm. It is desirable that the participant

bask in the afterglow so that he or she has called the attention of the Goddess or

Godhead to himself, asking to grow closer to the Godhead/Goddess in both goals

and in wisdom. When you are ready to begin, sprinkle the salt on the floor and stand on it,

lighting the candle. Let the warmth of the candle be absorbed into the body.

Mix the water into the wine, meditating upon your reasons for performing the self-blessing.

Read the following aloud:

BLESS ME, MOTHER, FOR I AM THY CHILD.

Dip the fingers of the right hand into the mixed water and wine and anoint the eyes.

BLESSED BE MY EYES, THAT I MAY SEE THY PATH.

Anoint the nose.

BLESSED BE MY NOSE, THAT I MAY BREATHE THY ESSENCE.

Anoint the mouth.

BLESSED BE MY MOUTH, THAT I MAY SPEAK OF THEE.

Anoint the breast.

BLESSED BE MY BREAST, THAT I MAY BE FAITHFUL IN THY WORKS.

Anoint the loins.

BLESSED BE MY LOINS, WHICH BRING FORTH THE LIFE OF MAN AS THOU HAST

BROUGHT FORTH ALL CREATION.

Anoint the feet.

BLESSED BE MY FEET, THAT I MAY WALK IN THY WAYS.

Remain... and meditate for a while. You will feel renewed

A Ritual of Self Blessing

20:08 Jun 11 2006
Times Read: 681

RITUAL OF SELF-BLESSING

You will need

a small votive candle and holder (white is always good, but use color if you feel called to do that)

an incense stick, cone, or herbs (such as sage or thyme) to burn a small container of water

a small container of salt

I find that a sugar and creamer set works very well for this.

These can be purchased quite reasonably and set aside just for this use.

This is a ritual which connects you to the deepest levels of healing.

It also connects you to the four elements and their energies.

In this way it is most helpful for dealing with the shamanic elemental energies of Nature.

The candle represents the element of Fire

The incense or herbs represent Air

The container of water is Water

The container of salt is Earth.

Beyond that, these elements reflect your own needs.

The element of Fire reflects your relationships, protection, ideas and achievements.

The element of Air reflects your creativity, spirituality, inspiration and philosophies.

The element of Water reflects your emotions, intuition, dream states, psychic gifts, and healing balance.

The element of Earth reflects your practicality, knowledge, sacred wisdom, and growth.

Find a quiet time and place where you will not be disturbed.

You may make this as ceremonial or as informal as you choose.

Light the incense and take a few moments to consider the element of Air.

Consider the gifts that Air reflects in you.

Light the candle and take a few moments to consider the element of Fire.

Consider the gifts that Fire reflects in you.

Take a few moments to consider the element of water and how it reflects in you.

Take a few moments to consider the element of Earth and how it reflects in you.

Very gently, pour the water into the container of salt. If you are using herbs as an incense,

you may sprinkle a few in the water and salt mixture.

Stir the salt and water with your fingers. Consider the blending of elements that creates life itself.

Consider the balance of elements and their attributes in your life. Take a few moments to do this.

Facing the candle, dip your fingers in the water mixture and touch your forehead (3rd eye area).

Say: "Bless me Mother, for I am your child." (The original was written for the Goddess as Mother.

Another deity name can be substituted here, or simply say "Spirit.")

Now dip your fingers in the water mixture and touch the area around

your eyes carefully.

Say: "Bless my eyes that I may see you."

Dip again and touch your nose.

Say: "Bless my nose that I may breathe your essence."

Dip again and touch your ears.

Say: "Bless my ears that I may hear your wisdom."

Dip again and touch your mouth.

Say: "Bless my mouth that I may speak your name."

Dip again and touch your heart.

Say: "Bless my heart that I may feel your love."

Dip again and touch your lower abdomen.

Say: "Bless my cauldron center that I may create harmony."

Dip again and touch your feet.

Say: "Bless my feet that I may walk in balance."

Dip again and rub your hands together.

Say: "Bless my hands that I may share your healing in my work."

Take all the time you need to concentrate on the elements before you.

Focus your attention on the candle and visualize healing light flowing into you.

Feel strength emerging from deep inside yourself. Breathe deeply and capture that moment.

Connect with the source of strength and healing.

When you feel you are finished, blow out the candle.

It is good to leave the incense burning if you can.

Air is a communicating element, and smoke is transformation.

The incense carries the messages of healing and strength to Spirit.

If you have used herbs, it is good to return the ashes to Nature.

In this way, you are grounding the energy, bringing the message and the transformation to earth.

Make sure the ashes are cold; then place them at the roots

of a tree or bush if possible. If not, place them in soil or sand.

The salt and water mixture can be used very effectively in several ways.

You may wash your gemstones or other stones in this.

Crystals love this, since their energy is so personally connected to yours.

You may save the mixture and dab a little on your third-eye area every day for a few days, as a reminder.

You may pour the mixture into your bath for a gentle energizer.

When the bathwater drains, visualize a connection between yourself and the energies of Mother Ocean.

You may return the mixture to earth by pouring it on soil or sand.

Remember, plants don't thrive in salt; so keep the mixture clear of plants.

You may sprinkle the mixture throughout your house to seal in positive energies and protection

A Blessing For Wedding rings

20:05 Jun 11 2006
Times Read: 683

TO BLESS AND CONSECRATE WEDDING RINGS

To consecrate, bless and dedicate Wedding Rings to the Lord and Lady, first find the

place where you wish to set up the altar. This place must not be disturbed, for it will take

on sacred and holy energies, and you will not want anything to happen to this area.

Write two blessings to read to each other if you desire to and use some beautiful music

if there is some available. Have a Chalice of wine on the altar to drink from after the blessing.

Remember, the more energy and work that you put into your blessing ceremony , the

more magical energy it will take on. You may even use an energy bell or Tibetan bell

to signify that you are beginning to call those spiritual guides to assist you with your

blessing of the rings. Once you have found that place, take a smudge wand of Sage,

light it and begin to clear the air around the altar. Constantly, keep Love and Light in

your consciousness. Now, move to the four elements and ask for their guiding presence

and for their blessing for your rings.

Use a compass if needed to find the proper directions on the Earth.

North =Earth South = Fire East = Air West = Water Around = Spirit

Ask for their blessings and honor their assistance.

Next, begin to set up the altar, placing each of the two rings you wish to bless on the altar

gently and reverence. You may wish to use two 7 day candles (buy cheaply) to represent

the eternal presence of the God and Goddess in your life. Black for God, White for Goddess.

Red Candle for fire, incense for Air, small bowl of water for west, and salt for the Earth and North.

Once your altar is set up the way you want it, spend a few moments in quiet meditation

thinking about what this Ring Blessing Ceremony means to you. Now, allow the altar to

fill you with its magic and energy. Feel the magic around you. breathe in the Love and Light

from the Lord and Lady. Visual yourself and your love for each other revitalized because

of it's presence. See yourself becoming more healthy, whole, and wise.

Now, say aloud the Blessings you have written for each other.

Sprinkle the rings with Salt for North; (Earth)

Pass rings over or through the red candle flame;

South (Fire) Sprinkle rings with water,

West (Water) Pass rings through Incense smoke,

East; (Air) Say something like:

"We pledge these rings consecrated to the Lord and Lady

to each other as an outward symbol of our love for each other ."

Drink some wine from the Chalice holding it each to the others lips. Replace Chalice.

When you are ready to end your Ring Blessing Ritual; sound the bell once again, thanking

all elements for their presence and assistance.

Send them back to their humble abode harming none on their way.

Now, thank the Lord and Lady for their presence in your life.

Take a deep breath of the fresh magic
