Chapter one: A Battle of Grief
He starred up the stairs at the man he once called a friend. The dark shadows grew behind Skyler, nearly devouring him with its darkness, which had sadly become the fate of his old friend.
“You should really leave, get out while you still have the chance,” Leon suggested, his voice almost entrancing. Skyler thought back on the battle days before, he nearly killed Leon, but let him live, only to regret that now.
“I think I’ll stay,” Skyler answered pulling out his sword.
“Hmm, you just made your second mistake Skyler,” Leon said, glaring at his old friend through the corner of his eye, but keeping his back turned.
“And what was that?” Skyler questioned slowly walking closer, but ready with his sword at side, waiting for Leon’s move.
“Sticking around,” Leon answered. The shadows in front of Leon began to thicken.
“And what was my first?” Skyler asked steadying his blade.
“Letting me live,” Leon said turning. Leon pulled his sword from his side, and starred down at Skyler. Their eyes focused on the others every move, even the slightest. Skyler may have been a powerful warrior, but it was no match for Leon’s quickness.
The blade form each warrior soon met, and became locked in a fierce battle. Each fighter having no true reason for battle, just out of spite, for reasons that weren’t the fault of the other. Skyler was nothing to Leon. Every one of Skyler’s lashes from his anger were quickly dodged by Leon. The battle would truly have no winner. A strong rumble from the earth suddenly stopped the clashing of swords.
“Have fun,” Leon laughed. He disappeared in the shadows, leaving Skyler behind to die. He turned, searching for a way out, before he became trapped. A large piece of the castle roof fell just before Skyler’s feet. He jumped over it and ran out of the castle doors. As he stood in the safety of the near by street, he watched the castle fall, crumble to pieces. The old town was abandon, leaving Skyler alone once again, to track down his rival.
Near by gunshots quickly caught his attention. He ran, following what sounded like a struggle. Just feet away he could see a hooded girl holding two guns, starring down at the floor. There were several dead bodies on the ground. A huge creature lay on the ground beside her, filled with bullet holes. He slowly and quietly pulled out his blade, and gently pressed it into her back, so she couldn’t turn to face him.
“Who are you? What are you doing here?” Skyler asked sternly, thinking he had been followed by one of Leon’s lowly spies. The girl quickly turned, the barrel of her gun directly in between Skyler’s eyes. Her hood up, Skyler could not see her face. All he could see was her quivering lips, and what looked to be a tear strolling down her chin, before hitting the ground.
“Why do you point your sword at a stranger?” She asked, her voice shaking.
“I wouldn’t point my sword at any one if I didn’t have a reason to do it before.” He replied. Slowly she dropped her gun.
“Though you point your sword at me, I dare not point my gun at you without true reason. Kill me if you wish, I’ve nothing to loose now any way.” She said lowering her head.
“Loose your dignity cause I caught you off guard. Oh well, if death is what you want.” He said smiling. Just as he lifted his blade, he stopped. “Wait, remove your hood, I wish to look upon your face before it’s over.” He said. Slowly she removed her hood, Skyler dropped his sword and fell backwards as he stumbled. “Mina?” He asked.
“Mina? My name is Tori Clemons. Why is it, you and that man keep calling me a name that is not mine?” She yelled. “That name, cost me, everything.” She said turning.
“You look just like her, except, she had a different hair color. She had red hair. What do you mean that name cost you everything?” He asked walking to Tori.
“A few weeks ago, a man came to me, while I was with my two baby daughters, and my husband. He looked at me, he called me Mina. I tried to tell him my real name, that he was mistaken. But he became furious, and he killed them before my very eyes.” She answered.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know. But, why are you here?” He asked.
“I followed him, me and some old friends did, he deserves to pay for what he did to my family.” She said crying.
“What he did to you, you mean.” Skyler butted in.
“No, if you look at it in a way, he did nothing to me, he did not hurt me physically as he did with them. He did not take my life, he just simple broke it. Why am I telling you this? Why are you here?” She asked.
“Leon, the man you’re looking for, killed my girlfriend a couple weeks ago, cause of something he thought I did. That’s all I’m telling you, and just like you, I followed him here. I should be going.” He said walking away.
“Hold it,” she said pulling out her other gun. Skyler starred at her, he was slightly nervous, he didn’t know her, he didn’t know if she just might pull the trigger. “What is your name?” She asked. Skyler’s shoulders dropped as he sighed.
“Skyler Harris. That’s my name.” He replied. Tori smiled, and began to laugh. “Why are you laughing?” He asked.
“Nothing. I’m coming with you, you know where to find Leon.” She said putting her gun away, and picking the other from the ground.
“What if I say no?” He asked.
“Then the second you turn to leave, I’ll put a bullet through the back of your skull. So, I don’t really think you have a choice. Your just gunna have to bite your lip, grit your teeth, and deal with it.” Se said smiling as she stood in front of him.
“Is that so?” He asked. Tori nodded. Tori glanced behind her, and that’s all Skyler needed. He grabbed her arm, twisting her around and pinned her to the ground. He sat on top of her, holding her arms down, and away from her guns. “I think its gunna be pretty hard to pull a trigger on a gun that’s not in your hands.” He said smiling. Tori smiled. Slowly moving her leg, she pulled up her knee, hitting Skyler in the chest. He fell backwards, Tori grabbed her gun, and pushed him all the way to the ground, sitting on top of him. She sat, with her gun facing him.
“You’re fast, but I don’t think your fast enough. And right now, it would be so easy to pull this trigger.” She said smiling.
“What did you used to do for a living any way?” He asked.
“Nothing, nothing at all. That’s why it’s so funny.” She said laughing. She got closer to him, and whispered in his ear. “And think, you’ve been training for over two years now.” She stood, and helped Skyler to his feet.
“How did you know I had been training?” He asked.
“I don’t know, but I knew.” She answered sliding her gun in its case.
“Huh, I guess you can come with me. Just don’t get in my way.” He said heading into the woods. She followed him, but with quite a distance between them. “So, where ya from anyways?” He asked. He waited, and Tori didn’t reply. He turned, to see her laying on her side on the ground. He walked over and knelt beside her, turning her over on her back. “Tori, are you okay?” He asked. Her body began to jerk and shake. Her eyes opened and they were red, she leaned up, and Skyler scooted back away from her. A massive red light shot out of her.
“AAAHHH!” She screamed. Skyler starred at her, having no idea on what it was he should do. “Make it stop!” She yelled falling back to the ground. She leaned back up and began digging at her chest, as if trying to pull what ever it was put of her body. The light stopped, and Tori collapsed back to the ground lifelessly.
“What the hell was that?” Skyler yelled standing. “Tori, are you okay?” He asked walking back to her. He bent down, and picked her up. Holding her tightly, he continued down the forest road.
“Skyler?” He heard her whisper after a few minutes. He looked down at her.
“What happened, are you alright?” He asked as he stopped, but still held her.
“I’m just, so tired.” She replied. She rapped her arms around his neck and laid her head down on his shoulder as she closed her eyes.
“Hmm, maybe we should stop in Juska then.” He said starting to walk again. By nightfall they had arrived in the city of Juska. A once quite, peaceful town when Skyler was a young child, Juska had much changed. It was now a thriving town of elegant parties and feasts. He looked over and noticed a small inn. He headed towards it, holding Tori firmly. He looked down at Tori’s chest, and a drop a sweat strolled down his face.
“Keep it together man, you were just with Tera.” He said to himself. He approached the lady standing at the service desk inside inn.
“May I help you sir?” She asked, starring at Tori’s body.
“We’re a little tired; do you have two rooms available?” He asked.
“Oh, no, I’m sorry, we’ve only one left. Would you be taking that, she looks awfully tired.” The girl said. Skyler looked down at Tori, she did look exhausted, she couldn’t even stand.
“Sure, thank you.” He said, taking the key, and heading to the room. He laid her down on the bed, pulling the covers from under her, and laying them softly on her body. He walked over and sat in a small chair in the corner across from the bed, starring at Tori while she slept. Just before Skyler closed his eyes, Tori rose up and looked at him.
“Skyler, that chair doesn’t look to comfy,” she said smiling, even through the darkness he could see her smile.
“It’s deal-able,” he replied.
“You know, this bed is big enough for two.” She said. He looked up at her.
“Is that an invitation?” He asked.
“It might be, come on, it’ll be more comfortable for you to sleep in a bed anyways.” She said. He slowly stood, and headed over to the bed.
He laid down on his back as she laid on hers. He turned on his side, holding himself up on his arm as he starred at her closing her eyes.
“Tori, what was it like to be married?” He asked. She opened her eyes and looked at him.
“Being married is like, an argument for example. You say your point of views, say why the other person is wrong, call each other names, but then, some one steps in, and they help you resolve your argument. And then you can smile again.” She said starring into his eyes.
“Did you like being married?” He asked.
“Yeah, I did very much. Were you ever married?” She asked. Skyler looked at Tori as she slightly smiled.
“No, planned on it, but you know plans, they change.” He said. There was a moment of silence as the looked at each other. Skyler drew nearer, he was pulled to Tori in such a strong, he couldn’t explain why, he had only known her a few short hours.
