Sex As Art18:31 Jul 31 2009

The Greeks used it. The Romans used it. We use it today. And yet, it is under wraps of "taboo", and its participants have been branded "sluts", "whores", and worse. What is this, you may ask? It's nudity in art. And apparently, it's "wrong".
The art of the human body is something that ancient civilizations respected. Often, gods, godesses and mortals were depicted nude. Venus? Nude. Vulcan? Nude. It could show purity. It could show the human being at its most basic state.
It could show the sheer fragility that mankind has.
Even throughout the Renaissance Age, nudity was everywhere. Michelangelo's David? Not only is he nude, but he's three dimensional. Cherubs were almost always nude. People probably saw more nudity in paintings than they saw in their lives.
Enter the Victorian Era. In the age of taboo, "unmentionables", scandal, and prudishness, nudity became disgusting and vulgar. Many a proper lady would bat her fan and say, "Oh, the savagery of it all! Those... people sitting around without a stitch on!" Did she notice the beauty of the human essence, the lines that we as the human race have been blessed with? No, she only saw the things that must not be been seen, and that was all.
Sadly, that idea has been brought into today's society. You can see her breasts? She must be a porn star. She isn't wearing underwear? She must be asking for it. Never does anyone wonder if we really haven't been changed too much from our prudish leaning. Could it be that we haven't figured out what our ancient ancestors knew? That the human body can be just as tasteful... without clothes?
I watch a nude photographer, and much of his art can be seen in my favorites list. His models almost never wear anything, and yet, they are tasteful, artistic, and beautiful. They don't... no, they shouldn't excite "shameful" sexual desries. They've had to be so brave, to bare all and in return recieve a mixture of praise and slander. Do people notice this? No. Again, they see the material thing, and nothing else.
Look at the "Artistic Nude" category sometime. These models are not porn stars. They don't get paid for sex. They don't want your sick, twisted comments. They just want to keep alive a vital genre of art that ignorant society has denied us, over and over again. They want people to say, "You're beautiful. You're brave. You know that art does not stop at the skin. It is much deeper than that. It makes us see beauty. And you know that."
If they make you want to mabsturbate, or whatever, I don't care. Well, I do care. In fact, I'm absolutely disturbed by it. But you just proved that you have no grip on everything that art can be. You just proved that you don't respect those models. You just proved that I wasted this little speech on you. But that's your decision. I can't change you. I can only try.
Beauty is never skin deep.
The Making of a Ballerina07:48 Jul 30 2009

I did not really wish to be a ballet dancer.
True, my first visit to the theatre fired my imagination, but I was not swept off my feet by that strong impulse for a stage career which precipitated so many to the footlights…
Wearing a crisp tarlatan tutu and performing with a smile…

I am an artist.
I am beautiful. I am ugly.
I am intelligent. I am dumb.
I am powerful. I am powerless.
I am gray.
I get bored easily with myself. That's why my mind over body are always in metamorphose.
”All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring.”
My life has been everything but easy but still I enjoy living it. I advise people to do the same. Stop weeping about everything and do it, for life is too short to be wasted.

Deadly Neurotoxin05:13 Jul 05 2009

When I said "deadly neurotoxin," the "deadly" was in massive sarcasm quotes. I could take a bath in this stuff. Put it on cereal, rub it right into my eyes... honestly, it's not deadly at all... to *me*. You, on the other hand, are going to find its deadliness... a lot less funny.

So true. Nudity can be a very tasteful thing if done correctly. I think the human body is a very beautiful and captivating thing that should be treasured and respected. Clothes are beautiful, but the natural lines of the human form truly shine when they are admired not for sexual purposes, but as a work of art. And the beauty on the inside of a person further highlights their natural lines, grace and physical beauty even more.
Very well written and again, very true. :)

Very well said Maell.
This world of others' point of views upon sex as art.
Why do we as a country find hate more appealing than love? Are we really becoming monsters?
The human body is a beautiful, artistic thing, and it's sad that people can be ashamed and offended by nudity. It's a shame that people can't step back and admire the body for what it is, a work of art.
Even I who have taken the liberty of ballet can be protrayed as sex. For what the music of genre is classical and industrial of which I perform to. Tends to bit of sexually.
Very, very true. Nude art isn't unethical or immoral at all. It's art, just like everything else that belongs on this site. I think nude art should be respected, these people are showing off their bodies, they're willing to do that to create something beautiful. What bothers me about this genre of art is when a person posts a picture that is supposed to be 'art' but is actually very, graphically sexual. Sensual? I have no problem with that. Crude sexuality on the other hand... that just makes me sad and it lowers a branch of art that should not have to deal with that.
It's like, one of those "bad apples" in the universe of nude art. I found some and it was sick. Honestly, I was glad when it got taken down. Stuff like that makes the whole nude community look bad.
