the reason..

it was long ago, when i made a special promise to myself. the promise is more complex than it seems. took me a long time to get to where I'm at now....where it comes naturally. let me take you back to where it all started. before i made the promise of my 9Th birth-day.

it was summer, but of course that didn't keep my parents home. so my brother and i always go to my mother's friends house, marry and her husband John. so my 12 year old brother can play with their son Matthew who is the same age as Calvin, and i get baby sited by their 16 year old daughter, Elizabeth. she annoyed me more than a rock star watching an opera. she was too kind. she always smilling, always laughing, and always had something to say. this one day i could never forget how annoyed i was of her laughter. so i did all i could to destroy everything and made her clean it up. saying things like "your not my mother." and lock her out of her own room. this went on for weeks. then suddenly i saw a change in her. she didn't talk all that much, she would do petty chuckles, and have a cricked smile. i didn't care, I'm glad shes off my case. until one day i found myself in my room looking out my window at her house, and how it was swallowed by trees. which led to a forest. i was curious of why she acted that way....why no more smiles or annoying laughs. it wasn't long before i saw Elizabeth come out of her house with a colorful bow in her hand and went into the woods, i ran into the woods barefooted trying to catch up. i came to a tree to rest. my body facing the direction i came. until i heard singing. i rolled over to see who had a voice of a thousand angels. it was Elizabeth, sitting on a branch of a strong tree. her song was very sad, but understandable. it was about a girl talking to her conscience about facing death and people shouldn't be afraid of it. i remember her saying "then why am i afraid to face it?" i was confused. why does a 16 year old have to worry about death? my grandma died, but she was 80 something not 16. Elizabeth continued singing. i herd my name in her song. something about how she can see herself in me. which really startled me for she was always smiling and i was very mean to her, but while i was thinking this, i snickered. which stopped the song and made her call out to me.i came out carefully, with a confused look on my face. she started at me. she told me to climb the tree to where she was at. i gave her an, are you out of your mind look. she laughed at me again. i said "i thought you weren't going to laugh again?" she smiled and said "i cant help but smile at you." she looked up at the sky. she said "i only laugh because it makes me happy." i asked "then why do you sing about death and me?" Elizabeth looked at me then down at the ground. she told me to get her box out of the hold in the bottom of the tree. as i opened it she said. "i sing about death for i am dieing from a disease that cannot be cured. i sing about you for you encourage me to be who i am even tho i know where i will be." i looked at every item in the box: her favorite necklaces that she never took off, a toy i always played with, and a pitcher of Elizabeth and i with ribbon wrapped around it. she got a leaf from the the big tree, and put it in a folded paper, and placed it in the box. " why must i know these things, Elizabeth?" she said with gentleness. "you give me reason to live when in the end i live no more."

it was a couple of months later. Elizabeth passed away. i went to the big tree where she sang and i climb to the branch to where she looked down at me. i looked up at the sky and with the same gentleness as she had. i said "you are the reason i fear not my death in the end. your are the reason i smile and laugh. you give me encouragement to live my life to the fullest. i must thank you, my friend for i promise. i do no harm to others nor be who I'm not." i grabbed the box, looked in it again and placed it in the hole of the tree.
