I found this interesting...

This is not my photography

Photobucket

You have to view it at large size to see the true beauty of the wings.

Used a +10 close-up filter with my FujiFilm Finepix S7000 and had to sit down in the mosquito infested part of my garden for more than 15 minutes to get this shot.

If you study a dragonfly closely you will notice that once it sits on something it returns to that spot frequently. So I just went close to the place where it was sitting and stayed there motionless even after it flew away. It flew away and returned to that same spot 3 or 4 times while I sat there taking pictures of it. So the mosquito bites I got did have its reward after all.

Yet another...

The Blue Dasher

Dragonflies are aerial predators, ruling the skies and terrorizing other airborne insects since before the dinosaurs. Although they have a more "primitive" flight mechanism than other insects, this does not mean they are poorer fliers; they are, in certain ways, more agile than anything that has evolved afterwards. After all, if they couldn't outmaneuver their prey, they would have gone extinct long ago...

An engineer's dream, its wings provide the dragonfly with outstanding speed and maneuverability. They feature a direct flight mechanism with wing muscles connecting directly to the wing bases, which are hinged so that a small movement of the wing base downward lifts the wing itself upwards (much like an oar). When in flight, the wings perform a figure-8 motion, creating vortices of swirling air that keep the insect aloft. They take advantage of unsteady viscous fluid dynamics in a way we are still striving to comprehend. Fore and hind wings operate independently, which gives a degree of fine control and mobility not seen in other flying insects, in terms of the abruptness with which they can change direction and speed.

I love the photos and detail of the burgundy dragonfly. The wing structure is stunning.

"We'll meet again

Don't know where

Don't know when

But I know

We'll meet again

Some sunny day

Keep smilin' thru

Just like you

Always do

'Til the blue skies drive

The dark clouds

Far away"
